Seeing MJ actually tear just makes his heart sink. It only make everything feel all the worse, raw and uncomfortable. Breaking up with someone you still love in a way is awful.
It was easier to say this in theory, to pretend he could make this a clean break. He had practiced occasionally in his mind what he would say in this situation, only to have all those plans crumble as soon as the real thing happened.

The coppery taste sticks to his teeth and tongue. It is grounding in it own way, even if it doesn't stop him from tearing up a little.
