PANDORA'S FOX II

If you were here last June, do you remember that app that appeared on the relics then, Pandora's Fox? It's all about finding your Familiar bond. It's been available for people to use since every Star Child was forced to fill it out or have it filled out for them with its grand reveal. However, it's sat quietly in the background unobtrusive to those who didn't click to see what it was about.

Until now.

That's right, Pandora's Fox is back! (and with a makeover). The app has been rejiggered with old questions and new, including some specific to each Role! The app will buzz and open itself with a blank profile waiting to be filled out. Star Children can fill it out for themselves—as long as they don't lie. This app will not allow Star Children to lie. Honesty is important in a Familiar bond. Star Children who lie may find that answer filled in a little too honestly and unable to be deleted. Anyone who waits too long to fill it in will find it answered for them!

[ Mizu doesn't care to give a longer answer or to explain how it backfires each and every time. She's sharp and angry, and the audio recording clips off before Mizu says something worse. ]

[ Okay, so. Not the right thing to say. The anger comes through the Relic clear enough, even in that one word.

Rin mulls it over for a minute, and then decides to shoot Mizu a text message. ]

I said the wrong thing. I'm sorry.

[ Mizu ignores the message for a little bit, but she's not actually doing anything at the moment. If there were work to receive her focus or if Vergil were there, she would not be on the relic in the first place. Once, perhaps twice, a day is usually enough for her.

Except it is a treasure trove of information, this latest thing that's happened, so Mizu's been on it more. She sighs and looks at the message she ignored. ]

Think it over, then write to me when you can explain why it was the wrong thing.

Maybe you should be a teacher.

[ The message is meant to be teasing, but the tone might be lost in a text message. Nevertheless, Rin does as she's told (for once) and thinks it over. It takes a while until she writes more. ]

If you say it's been all your life, even when you were a child, then I guess people who'd call a child a demon wouldn't change their opinion when that child grows up.

I guess there are many people who never change their opinions on things.

I do not know how to be a teacher.

[ She doesn't. She hasn't done book learning herself, the kind of thing teachers teach. Don't ask her to recite poetry. She doesn't know any.

Rin's answer misses the main point, but it still interrogates what she said and points out a truth Mizu's known and experienced all her life. It's something. ]

[ It does not help Mizu is not a kind person. Plenty of people don't like her when they get to know her. ]

Look, I know our country isn't very friendly to people who fall through the cracks, I guess. Sorry, I'm not sure how exactly to put it. Point is, I met a lot of people like that. In some ways, I've been there myself. But it always seemed like those of us who aren't part of normal life seem to find each other, you know? At least that was my impression.

[ And as much as she'd hate to admit it, it seemed like Itto-ryu was one of the places where those kinds of people seemed to gather.

Those that didn't fit in in both not so bad ways and very bad ways. ]

No, that is not my impression. We might recognize that trait in each other when we see each other, but going through shit doesn't mean you get along or understand each other. Everyone still has their lives, and they are not readily fit together.

[ Mizu sees the departures, the differences, the ways things don't work out far more than the good. Yes, Ringo identified with her, but he didn't understand the darkness inside Mizu, and he left once he did. That's what happens. ]

Well, of course not. But you can still have things in common. You can still go at least a part of your way together. That's better than nothing, right?

[ Congrats, Mizu, you made the Rin sad. Or she made herself sad -- by thinking about how temporary all her connections really were, and are. Even her... whatever she had with Manji has to come to an end. Whatever relationships she'll form here are dictated by how long either she or the other people stay here.

It is a bit depressing, actually, now that she thinks about it. ]

And, I mean, you and I get along, don't we? At least I think so.

[ Please, Mizu, she's trying to hold onto hope here. ]

[ Mizu stares at the message. Better than nothing? It's not a statement so easy to agree with in the optimistic way Rin reads. Her instinctual reaction is to reject the idea, to push it away from her until it no longer matters when people come and go. It's swordfather's words and the steel she reforged nearly a year ago now and the sword she remade here that stop her. ]

Perhaps.

[ That's as much as Mizu can commit to on that. It can only be known on a case by case basis, and whether it is good or bad, knowing people cannot be undone. Crossed paths have always been crossed, no matter where they lead from there. ]

We get along fine.

[ Mizu allows Rin to continue to be part of her life. That should say it already. If Mizu disliked Rin, Rin would know. Mizu isn't shy about that no matter that they have no control over making someone else leave. ]

[ Hah! Mizu admitted it. ]

So that's one person you get along with already!

And I'm not going to just drop you, okay?

[ It's probably not enough. It doesn't undo what's happened to Mizu. But every journey begins with a step, right? ]

[ It means only a little that Rin says she won't drop Mizu. Ringo devoted himself to her despite how dark a path she warned him she tread. He didn't understand, and once he saw a portion of it, he left. That's how it goes, even when people mean what they say in the present. ]

I'm curious how you plan to help me out.

[ Joke's on Mizu, because Rin's been out in the world for a bit now, and she's seen darkness. Seen way worse than Mizu, that she is confident about. ]

We'll see that when we get there, no? There's always something.

[ That's not the only reason people leave. Simply one of them. There's always a reason, and if nothing else, the fox spirit may whisk Rin away at any moment. ]

Not sure if I should look forward to that with anticipation or dread.
