Truth Meme

Somehow, there is kirin on you.
Most likely, it is the fur of the kirin that was caught in the environment of wherever you’ve been; there is a stray hair on you because one was on the seat you sat on upon the train or because it blew onto the brim of your hat in the wind.
Or it may be because you met the kirin—a playful ungulate moose-sized spirit who prefers not to speak—and engaged with him and gave him a pat, or a scratch behind an ear. Maybe the kirin nosed or licked your hand because you made him laugh (it’s an adorable ‘keh keh keh’ sound).
Unfortunately for both you and the kirin (who had not meant to trouble your day like this, truly), this exposure to his dander has only one reaction, and it happens to 100% of Star Children: you are compelled to tell the entire truth. About what is less specific; you are compelled simply to announce things about yourself—your life, experiences, thoughts, opinions, feelings. No matter if it’s something silly and inconsequential, deep or secretive, life-altering or commonplace. Some may choose to do this by employing Foxi and their relic; others by finding people to exchange truth with to face to face.
When you have met the kirin’s subconscious desire for four hours, you will be free from the truth telling and the recipient of 24 hours of good luck. The good luck will be sometime in the next year rather than in the next day, and you may have no idea where it came from, but you’ll know a lucky day when you have it!

[Like most things. The technology he can bring back needs to be something that their level of knowledge can DO something with or it'd be utterly wasted.
He knows it's a distraction, but it seems the lack of filter didn't really care what the subject was, so still radiating grumpy irritation, he picks up one of his notebooks to potentially continue with homework. Ordinarily having someone go through personal things like his relic would be a problem but it's been some months since he had a conversation that really needed to be kept to himself.]
At least you knew what the ice cream was and what it would do. I don't know where this came from. I don't like it.

[ This is... well, not helpful exactly. Dilithium could be called something entirely different if it existed on Gaia. But there's a nuance behind the tone that suggests the curiosity is a little more invested than just... well the advantage of this being something to distract Sephiroth from his ire.
About then, Sephiroth's relic, if it bleeps with a message arrival, does in fact bleep. Vincent looks down at it. And... types something. A trickle of agitation crosses the bond but it fades quickly. ]
I'm telling Sharon I'm holding onto your relic for now.

[he can hear his relic's alerts, and one is ignorable, he did hand it over but more than that..
The teen frowns.]
Don't pick on her, if that's what you're doing. I almost got her vivisected by the Professor a few months back, she has every right to say things to me I don't like.
no subject
Nothing comes to mind. [ He does speak like he had heard enough about the wonders of the natural world to at least have some wide range of knowledge to draw from. ] But... I suppose that doesn't mean much. My knowledge is a bit dated. And the planet is always presenting new mysteries.
[ Then... the upset. Vincent looks up as Sephiroth warns him off.
There is... something like reluctance. But the irritation ebbs and the former Turk sighs. ]
Only partly. Mostly telling her I won't extend the same courtesy, anyway. I'll leave it at that.
[ He will. Even if a trace of agitation remains. It is slowly edged out by renewed concern. Yeah he caught himself just in time; there are some questions he won't ask until after Sephiroth isn't compelled to answer them. ]
Anything I can help with on your homework?
[ There's probably some things Vincent isn't completely hopeless on. ]
no subject
[Impractical but interesting, like many of his casual interests. He can't do a thing with it, but he can dabble anyway like the complete amateur he was. Sooner or later he'd surely stumble across SOMETHING that they can use.
Or at the least it'll keep him occupied.]
... Good. I'm skeptical you'll let anything go that easily which makes you mad, but she's not a bad person. Just kind of really loud and abrasive, from what I can tell.
[His knowledge of Sharon was fairly limited to a lot of network and one very unpleasant Not!Trial, but he tended to assume the best of anyone not an executive or scientist.
The homework is considered.]
No. I can do it, I'm just procrastinating. It's not actually difficult.
no subject
Though that wouldn't help much for Sephiroth's time.
Vincent closes the relic after a final parting message and tucks it away under his cloak. He'll be holding on to that. The man then needs to respond to the obvious; that he had been irritated enough to let it traverse the bond. ]
Hrmph. I don't have a high tolerance for willful ignorance. Even without the bond, I would have been able to tell something's wrong. Having her turn around and say she did nothing wrong didn't sit well with me.
[ Whether or not Sephiroth chooses to accept it's one of the privileges she's allow, to be that way, doesn't mean it was right. ]
...The motherly act directed at me right after didn't improve my mood.
no subject
[His attention is turned back to his homework, but something shifts in his posture, a tension that suggests he's REALLY not thrilled about talking about any of it.. and can't really stop.
Don't pet strange deer, kids.]
She doesn't feel any more motherly to me than a rock does, but she might not like being caught at any of this, it might make her look bad. We don't really know each other, except that based on things she'd said I'm pretty sure she knows what my future is at least. So what looks like any kind of kindness or defensiveness for me is little more than mitigation strategies for the future, likely.
no subject
[ The one he remembers. It's worth a soft sigh. He could go into detail but it's not worth triggering... more on the subject. Vincent reads the tension. Purposefully changes the subject after he makes the statement Sephiroth's... forced to. ]
Want me to make food? Then... Do you want me to stay around?
[ Keep away people pestering with uncomfortable questions. ]
no subject
It's surprising she doesn't hate me and want me dead. I'm grateful for that, I'd prefer being hated for things I've done instead of things I'm hoping to make sure never happens. Which if all goes well, is all of it.
[.. Well, that part's not too terrible to be forced to say, even if he wouldn't usually bother. His goals are still very much into preventing disaster instead of causing it.]
I'm not really hungry at the moment but if you wish to you can, maybe smell will change that. If you want to stay you can, you don't bother me to have around like some people do, but I'm probably going to make it weird sooner or later. It might be easier for you to avoid that.
no subject
[ Pushing away from the wall, Vincent starts making his way to the kitchen to find out just what Sephiroth has kept in stock. There's the sound of cupboards and... has Sephiroth obtained a fridge? Well, he's checking places where food should be. ]
I usually avoid the company of others for a lot of reasons. [ This is just observable fact. ] But I'll be fine as long as you're okay with me sticking around.
[ There's more rustling. Pots, bowls. Utensil drawer. ....Vincent doesn't usually cook. He's the guy that goes to get takeout. Lores up the whole meal. Heats up leftovers. What is he doing? ]
no subject
... Maybe. People tend to take things worse when it's about them directly..
[..What IS he doing? From where he sits, Sephiroth can't see vincent, but he can hear him fine. It isn't as if he usually keeps a stack of raw materials in the house, besides easy to grab things like fruit he didn't want to spend a lot of time just making more of.]
For now, I think it's okay. There isn't a lot I can think of that you don't already know or would care about.
no subject
Mm. That's true enough.
[ Hard to say if Vincent means how people react or that there isn't much he doesn't know about Sephiroth. It's probably both. Soon there's going to be sounds of a pan being placed on the stove, eventually the sizzle of something dropped into it - beef will be the eventual scent- and the sound of a knife being used to chop things.
Spoiler, it's going to be spaghetti and meat sauce. Also while a chopped onion might be involved, you'll have to forgive him for using a canned sauce. Vincent has many skills but more than the basic knowledge of cooking is not among them. ]
...Hrmph. Don't take this the wrong way but it's hard to know what to bring up. So... what do you want to talk about?
[ Vincent isn't the most chatty person at the best of times but also struggling to find a topic to address that won't trigger an unfortunate forced truth? At the very least he can let Sephiroth decide. ...Well, one more thing actually. ]
Do you like garlic bread?
no subject
[He's pretty willing to try to eat anything at least once. Well, most things. Anything that looked like food, so long as he was in the mood to eat. Nothing was putting him off the interest in eating today at least, so hwatever Vincent's up to in there shouldn't go to waste.
Smells like meat of some kind.]
The truth compulsion does make things awkward, I did warn that would be a problem. I don't really feel the need to discuss much. There isn't a lot you could help with that I've been thinking about, you can't travel to my timeline.
no subject
[ Cue some summoning of heat and serve garlic bread. It'll be put in the oven near to when the other stuff is finished. At least spaghetti and meat sauce doesn't take long to make. Twenty minutes or so. And it's perfect for holding conversations. ]
You did. Not talking's an option too. Though... hm.
[ There's a pause at the last bit. ]
I can't go with you, we've gone over that. But I can tell you about people. Tactics. Rough locations. Do you want to talk about what you've been thinking about?
[ If Sephiroth hadn't really wanted to talk about it, he would have not mentioned it, even as an aside. Yet Vincent is still careful with how he engages it. ]
no subject
And then he wouldn't be able to resist saying something about it.]
Not especially, whatever's affecting me seems to think anything that crosses my mind as a coherent thought is a viable source of conversation, but thank you for asking.
[Sourly, the notepad he's working on is jabbed with his pen a little. It doesn't help anything, it's just paper.]
I'm beginning to think at this point there's truth to Mother Jenova's inherent, natural evil, and I've just.. inherited it, if everything I come up with is relentlessly awful and malevolent even when I don't intend harm. It keeps happening. Constantly.
[It's not even an exaggeration, when he thinks about it. Every single plan he's come up with once anyone knew anything about it, was somehow bad.]
My current plan is to kill most of the executives in Shinra and hope middle management isn't as bad when they're promoted into the empty slots. At this point Palmer might be the only one who can be controlled.
no subject
Interesting. Difficult but... not impossible.
[ Is he disturbed? Not at all. But he's a Turk. ]
The Turks will be an obstacle. Hojo may be an exception, but going after the entire executive branch is something different. But I can give you insight on most of the executives that should be in place.
[ Everything is definitely beginning to smell like spaghetti. It won't be long ]
Who's currently on the executive board? Heidegger, Hojo. Hm. Palmer you mentioned. Scarlet? Does Reeve Tuesti ring any bells?
no subject
[In Shinra it could go either way, and Sephiroth knows it.]
Additionally, Rufus Shinra of course, Vice President at a mere twenty years old. Absolutely a nepotism hire.
no subject
[ The most obvious concern would be Heidegger's control over the military and Turks. SOLDIER too, by Vincent's time. But he doesn't think to mention this. The hierarchy that was there prior to Nibelheim is something he has very little knowledge about. There's a pause. ]
Reeve is a prodigy. And... he's also someone you can reason with. In my time, he ends up becoming an ally. Later fills the power void when Shinra falls and works to restore and protect the planet. I think he can be a valuable ally. You can take my words with a grain of salt. But... I'd appreciate if you spare him.
[ Even if he hadn't mentioned his bias, Vincent's tone and the emotions through the bond would make it clear that Reeve is a trusted friend. Vincent then frowns a bit in thought. ]
Rufus, huh?
[ Idly his fingers tap against the counter. The metallic tips can be heard clacking for a moment. ]
I didn't think he'd be old enough.
[ Shouldn't be maybe. Was his math wrong? The boy's birth had been announced near the time he went under and sometimes Vincent wondered if he could completely trust his memories near and around that time. ]
But... hm. In my time, he thought differently from his father's strategy. The old man believed in money. Rufus would use money, but... his tactics seemed to favor fear or awe to maintain control.
[ Awe to rise the spirits and national pride. Shows of power to sow fear and keep enemies from charging at the walls. ]
no subject
[He's not entirely certain, but .. mostly. People who wanted money could be negotiated with, made to see other, more profitable options than the current path.
Reeve ... didn't sound like someone that should be an immediate target. It's possible there's still ambition and designs, simply held in check by the older, more entrenched greed of his elders. Sephiroth was willing to let it go for a while, but he'll be watching.]
When the President says he wants his kid as Vice, then I imagine everyone bends to his whim. Twenty is old enough for a managerial position, but vice president.. has implications, I think. It's not really a position of true power, but it's very public and makes it hard to act.
[Rufus was a mystery. He'd continue to be for a while, though if he was more amenable to Sephiroth's plans than the aging senior Shinra, then...
Well, sometimes patricide was a way of instilling fear and awe too.]
I won't put much stock in the heir apparent being interested in selling out his father for power, but if the Turks are willing to cooperate with me they may have an insider perspective that I, a mere tool, would lack.
no subject
I'm not sure selling out is the right word to use. Rufus is clever and careful. But ultimately I think he acts in a way that provide the most benefit to his future plans. Being made vice president may be a way to keep him in check and under observation.
[ More sounds, suggesting that things are finishing up in the kitchen. Strong garlicy smell is definitely backing that up. ]
He might sell his father out. But he would probably avoid anything that ties him directly to his father's death. He was set to inherit everything so why bloody his hands? You'd have to present him with cold proof that it's in his best interests to move that openly and join hands with you. If you go for the direct approach.
[ No one ever said that Rufus Shinra was sent away far from Midgar to supervise other interests because he was a filial son. ]
Food's almost ready.
no subject
[Food's almost ready, and so he extracts himself from what he's doing, shaking a bit of feeling back into a foot. He's still agitated, but it's.. less than it was, by far.]
But I don't think being so direct would be to my benefit. I can kill the Professor with minimal difficulty, I think. But moving against the President, when he could potentally be made to see the value in doing otherwise? His son might wind up an opponent instead.
[Speaking of murderous sons. Maybe they could bond over that.
Garlic wasn't usually a problem, so that .. is surely going to be interesting, whatever smells so strongly of it.]
In truth I suspect dealing with the beurocrats will be the easy part of what I must do.
no subject
Vincent hadn't minded spending the lore for what wasn't there. Even if that meant a spare pot for cooking. ]
Different types of difficulty.
[ Comparing human politiks and greed to a viral, space-borne calamity is... a choice. Vincent wishes he could do more. But it's not something he really has much say in. There are ideas he can pursue but ultimately, Sephiroth will be sent back to his world on his own. ]
Well, I don't envy you either. Neither are good. But... sometimes I think I'd prefer to deal with Jenova in the end.
[ Vincent wants to ask more directly. But... no. He won't. ]
no subject
[Inevitably, someone's going to try to interfere. And then the killing will spread. A fruit cube is picked up morosely, rolled in his hands in a sticky-sweet line before being eaten.]
Do you think ... it would be better if I didn't risk a confrontation with her at all? Just.. deal with the human factor as best as I can and then.. hope the Planet will take me? It'd hurt less, I think. Less chance of failure too.
no subject
I'll answer that as frankly as I can. I don't think you're ready right now. To face Jenova. [ His gaze slides to Sephiroth. ] You have enough on your plate. Hojo will be... difficult enough. You're turning your hand against your superiors.
[ But Vincent doesn't shake his head. Instead he continues to explain. ]
They're human. Hrmph...Barely. Jenova, what that is... a deadly, alien calamity with strong mental power. The closer you get to the source, to its head or core... The more risk there is.
[ Vincent's eyes narrow with memory. He shakes himself from it and focuses on Sephiroth again. ]
There's a lot you know now that makes your future uncertain. You know what you are. Not misled by false theories. Proximity of Jenova's will can let it dig into the fractures of your psyche. Which... everyone has. Still, it's hard to say if you would become part of Jenova... or dominate it.
[ He crosses his arms. ]
Let's say you leave Jenova and stay away from it. Ideally you will want to bury it again. But eventually it will be found again. Decades or centuries later. The problem will happen come around again. Maybe the planet will be better equipped. Maybe not. But it is a choice you can make.
[ There's nothing in his voice that indicates this would be cowardly. Nor is there in the bond. ]
