Truth Meme

Somehow, there is kirin on you.
Most likely, it is the fur of the kirin that was caught in the environment of wherever you’ve been; there is a stray hair on you because one was on the seat you sat on upon the train or because it blew onto the brim of your hat in the wind.
Or it may be because you met the kirin—a playful ungulate moose-sized spirit who prefers not to speak—and engaged with him and gave him a pat, or a scratch behind an ear. Maybe the kirin nosed or licked your hand because you made him laugh (it’s an adorable ‘keh keh keh’ sound).
Unfortunately for both you and the kirin (who had not meant to trouble your day like this, truly), this exposure to his dander has only one reaction, and it happens to 100% of Star Children: you are compelled to tell the entire truth. About what is less specific; you are compelled simply to announce things about yourself—your life, experiences, thoughts, opinions, feelings. No matter if it’s something silly and inconsequential, deep or secretive, life-altering or commonplace. Some may choose to do this by employing Foxi and their relic; others by finding people to exchange truth with to face to face.
When you have met the kirin’s subconscious desire for four hours, you will be free from the truth telling and the recipient of 24 hours of good luck. The good luck will be sometime in the next year rather than in the next day, and you may have no idea where it came from, but you’ll know a lucky day when you have it!

Action
[It's not like that was the weirdest thing Maul had ever heard someone having the power of doing. He'd already seen some weird stuff from Altair as it stood.]
What does mine sound like?
no subject
[Altair recognized Maul from his soul song right away. The imposing melody was always quick to ignite a spark in him and his eyes flashed brighter with the promise of a fight. Still, he owed Maul more than his sharp answer and the glow in his eyes dimmed as he hesitantly continued.]
But you asked, instead of condemned me for my ability.
[His anger towards Maul was also quieter for some reason and he ran his hand through his hair with a sigh.]
Why do you have to be so confusing?
[He eyes softly burned brighter and his consciousness started to pull to his magic side when his emotions resonated with Maul's soul song as he described it.]
Honestly it's intimidating. It's overwhelming from the start, just like how you don't hold back. It has a powerful melody that after very loudly and confidently announcing it's presence, it suddenly quiets down and then quickly and violently builds up again in a way that pulls you in and is annoyingly motivating. It makes me want to fight you again, but there are also parts with this ethereal chanting that are daunting but also intriguing.
[The glow in his eyes suddenly softened.]
Then there are also some quieter parts that remind me of when you stayed with me in the shattered spoon shrine.
[He didn't mean to say that last part and his eyes narrowed and small glare.]
Like I said. It's frustrating, and very distracting in a fight.
no subject
I'm often confusing to the people around me. I've made friends out of enemies before and enemies out of former friends. My emotions have always been unpredictable, even to myself, and I can never quite tell how I will react to a person or situation until I am already in it.
[His mirth died down and he gave a thoughtful nod of his head.]
I can believe your description of what I must sound like because it is all very true to my nature. I do not who or what I am as many people do. There just happen to be many different facets to what makes me up.
no subject
Heh, why doesn't that surprise me?
[Still, there was something about Maul's unpredictable nature that drew him in, enough to lower his guard a little.]
It doesn't bother you at all that I can hear your soul?
no subject
[He hadn't really meant to say that last part but, eh, it was nothing that wouldn't have come out eventually.]
I know we have fought before but my offer to teach you will remain open if you wish to pursue it in the future.
no subject
It was a disconcerting thought and Altair flinched when Maul's clawed hand brushed against the invisible magic around him. The thought that Maul might be able to see inside his soul terrified him and his eyes flashed with panic.] Like what?
[His reaction wasn't fair after Maul had been understanding of his ability and he forced down his unease and forced himself to relax.] I keep my ability hidden for the same reason and I still have plenty of tricks up my sleeve you don't know about yet.
[He added with a small smirk. He also didn't mean to say that last part, especially when all Maul had to do right now is ask and he would be forced to tell him everything. Maybe that wouldn't be a terrible thing and he ran his hand through his hair with a irritated sigh.]
I'll think about it. I am curious what you could teach me but I don't want to give in to your offer without a fight. We have a bet remember?
no subject
[Just most of the time.
Maul's soft voice sounded thoughtful as he explained what he was able to sense from Altair.]
It is not as if I can read your mind. I could if I wanted to but that requires concentration. What can be sensed through the Force is much more passive than that. I can tell you are more aligned with the Dark than the Light Side of the Force. That's not necessarily a bad thing because the two sides don't cleanly correlate with good and evil. It merely means you tend to fall back on your emotions much more to gather strength and use your powers. I can also feel some of them strongly within you. Your anger, your courage, that part of you that hates yourself.
[Now was the point where most people usually got angry that Maul could sense so much from them or admitted he was right in what he was able to pick up on in their general personalities.]
I remember. We shall see.
[Maul didn't plan to lose to an impudent young pup no matter how much he resonated with the young warrior's personality.]
no subject
He was quiet for a moment as he took everything in. He closed his eyes with a sigh.]
Well, you're not wrong. My magic is deeply tied to my emotions, not that I wanted you to know that. Not sure about courage though, it's more spite. I'm not that strong. I just pretend to be because I have to and don't want to fall apart.
[At the mention of their bet Altair perked up slightly.]
Why don't we settle it right now and get it over with? Then I don't have to keep thinking about it.
[Honest Altair was going to get him in trouble but he was tired of this strange tug of war where he was both drawn to Maul but also wanted nothing to do with him. It was confusing.]
no subject
[Maul was honest in what he saw and the compliments he gave out, for he was not one prone to lies to manipulate people, not in the same way that his master had always done.
At the mention of settling this complicated thing between them, Maul grinned, showing off all of his sharp fangs.]
Very well.
[Maul took off his outer robe and set it off to the side before lighting up his double-bladed lightsaber.]
Defend yourself!
[He said before striking out with the top blade, swinging it much in the same manner as a wooden staff was used by other martial artists.]
no subject
Not this time.
[He waited until the last minute before sinking into his shadow and disappearing. A few seconds later he reappeared from the shadows of one of the people further down the street. He quickly hid himself from view. First thing first, just how far of a range does Maul's ability to sense him have?]
no subject
Where was the little warrior now? He reached out with the Force, trying to sense the presence of the man's mind around him so he could figure out if he was going to strike next.]
no subject
no subject
When it did, he waited, and then whirled towards where he thought Altair was at when he got close enough. He struck out with the blade of the lightsaber twice in a sweeping, probing arc.]
no subject
no subject
So fooled by the silhouette, he moves towards it, attempting to strike it right at where the shoulder is at.]
no subject
You missed.
[He taunted as he attempted to wrap his arm around Maul's neck in a choke hold.]
no subject
Instead of panicking, Maul made sure to keep his head. Tucking his body down low, he rolled forward in an attempt to break the hold Altair had on him.]
no subject
When he felt Maul shift underneath him he stubbornly tightened his grip on him. Unfortunately the height difference between Altair and Maul made the position a bit awkward. When Maul rolled forward Altair went with him, allowing Maul to throw him to the ground and break the chokehold. Cursing as he hit the ground, Altair blindly kicked out at Maul's leg hoping to trip him while he recovered.]
no subject
He pointed it down at Altair on the ground, his soft voice with just the edge of a growl to it now.]
Do you yield?
the snail returns! sorry I'm late
His eyes narrowed with a cautious spark as he considered whether to risk another shadow jump. He might be able to disappear before Maul's lightsaber took his head but he decided against it. The idea of losing to Maul didn't sounds so terrible right now and there was a ghost of a chuckle in his resigned sigh.]
Yeah I yield. I might be able to use another shadow jump to get away but I like to keep one in reserve for emergencies.
[That darn truth spell wasn't going to give him a break huh. Although if Maul was going to be his teacher it might help if he knew his current limits.]
no subject
You are reckless, sloppy with the usage of your powers, and you have a tart tongue.
[Honestly, Maul might have been that brutally honest even if he wasn't under the compulsion to tell the truth. He doesn't spare the feelings of others, especially when it comes to teaching them anything.]
But still. There is promise there, much promise. We will begin your training tomorrow.
no subject
Your tongue is just as sharp but I lost the bet so I'll let you get away with it this time. Don't expect me to just roll over because you're my teacher though.
[If Maul wanted a quiet and obedient student then he came to the wrong place. His sharp tongue was part of the deal. He suddenly tightened his grip on Maul's hand, a subtle threat in his tone.]
As long as you don't betray me I look forward to learning from you.
no subject
[One had to have a little bit of spunk if they wanted to get along with Maul as their teacher. He could feel that grip suddenly tighten and didn't blink in the face of it.]
Trust me, if I betray you, you shall see it coming from the front rather than being stabbed in the back.
[Maul wouldn't promise he'd never betray Altair, for that was not in his nature. But he would need a very good reason to do so, especially now that he'd taken on the young man as an apprentice.]
no subject
Good. I prefer honesty to empty promises anyway.
Wrap up!
[He'd never learned how to twist words to suit his own needs the way his master had. The lies Maul told were more often directed towards himself than anyone else. With Altair, he would continue to make an effort to be honest.]
