Somehow, there is kirin on you.

Most likely, it is the fur of the kirin that was caught in the environment of wherever you’ve been; there is a stray hair on you because one was on the seat you sat on upon the train or because it blew onto the brim of your hat in the wind.

Or it may be because you met the kirin—a playful ungulate moose-sized spirit who prefers not to speak—and engaged with him and gave him a pat, or a scratch behind an ear. Maybe the kirin nosed or licked your hand because you made him laugh (it’s an adorable ‘keh keh keh’ sound).

Unfortunately for both you and the kirin (who had not meant to trouble your day like this, truly), this exposure to his dander has only one reaction, and it happens to 100% of Star Children: you are compelled to tell the entire truth. About what is less specific; you are compelled simply to announce things about yourself—your life, experiences, thoughts, opinions, feelings. No matter if it’s something silly and inconsequential, deep or secretive, life-altering or commonplace. Some may choose to do this by employing Foxi and their relic; others by finding people to exchange truth with to face to face.

When you have met the kirin’s subconscious desire for four hours, you will be free from the truth telling and the recipient of 24 hours of good luck. The good luck will be sometime in the next year rather than in the next day, and you may have no idea where it came from, but you’ll know a lucky day when you have it!

I don't know what a beanstalk is. Are they tall?

Not particularly, but they tend to grow in high up places. There's a little bit of climbing involved.

You want a drink to go with that? [Sticking her head in the fridge. She has like... uh. Orange soda. Well okay and varying alcohols, but maybe not over a plate of sausage and salad.]

[He's not fussy, he loves water. It's so clean here.]

Been a while since I've checked out one of these houses. I lived in one near here for a little bit- I think maybe two or three trees over? Do you like it here?

[Oh, water she can do. Katie closes the fridge and goes to the sink instead. She wouldn't trust the water at home, particularly, but here? Seems drawn quite fresh, indeed. Pouring him a glass.]

No, it's terrible. Do you know much about cats and trees where you're from?

No cats or trees where I'm from. [Not anymore, at least. Maybe there's cat bones in his echo. Or cat yokai bones. Anyway.] I learned about them here, though! They love to climb.

[His brows lift, eyes gleaming with fresh understanding. Aha, he gets it.]

[Katie has tried not to look too hard at those bones. She slides the water onto the table by his plate.]

Do they? I wouldn't know. [Grin.] Back home, you'd have all these silly cats climb up the tree and then realise they couldn't climb back down again. Firemen were called. Occasionally superheroes on their way home.

I'll have to remember that when we get back to New York. Rescuing cats from trees is a thing I can heroically do.

[It sounds so low stakes, compared to what he's used to. Which also sounds really nice.]

You mean like you did today? [She waggles her eyebrows, then peers back into the fridge. Maybe she shouldn't have alcohol on top of a tranq dart, hmm... on the other hand, EH. She pulls out a blueberry vodka concoction. She can burn it out of her system if she needs to.]

It's a worthy pursuit anyway, rescuing cats. They tend to remember when someone does them a favour.

[If she wants to booze it up, he won't judge. He's perfectly happy with this (in his opinion) very generous snack already. Her comment also makes him laugh.]

Is it a big deal, for a cat to owe someone a favour? [Or a pooka for that matter.]

[He's a growing/stunted/apocalyptic boy. Katie will stuff him full of food.]

It depends on the cat. Some of them are just plain offended and want to repay the favour as soon as possible for their pride. [She sits down opposite him.] Others just remember who is kind. It's important to know such things.

I agree on that one, for sure. [Kindness is very important. Of course he grew up knowing that- in a world that is so very cruel, kindness is more important than ever.] Food's a good favour I think. 'specially when you're hungry.

[In his mind she hadn't owed him before, but just in case, the quid pro quo is complete now.]

Isn't it? [He can relax a little; Katie isn't honourbound to follow him around declaring a life debt. She just likes to be good to the people who are good to her. But he is cemented as a Kind Person, as it were.]

It'd be nice if everything could be solved with a little food. [She smiles and toasts him with her very blue drink.] Seconds if you want them. Is that tranquiliser gun yours?

[He lifts his glass in turn, less interesting or colourful but that's his own fault. Should've gotten the orange soda!) ]

I'm good. And no, uh... I borrowed it. I just know someone who's into that stuff.

[The slow little Cheshire grin she gives when he says 'borrowed it'.]

Someone who is 'into that stuff'. Well, I shan't shame another's kinks.

Gross. [That's his not-uncle not-brother!] It came in handy though, didn't it?

Well, I can't possibly give you an answer on that. [Yes. Yes, it did. Put aside the random thought of why could he possibly use one, it was useful.] I suppose you should also thank him for its loan.

[Donnie probably won't even read it, nor will he notice it's gone before Casey returns it. It's fine.]

As long as he isn't likely to use it on you should he get tetchy beforehand. [She grins.] I suppose you ought to get it back to him, then.

Yeah, probably.

[He's a little noncommittal on that, but he should go home, and the lab is close enough that he can swing by and drop it off, so he ought to head out. He finishes off his water and takes his dishes to the sink like a good lad.]

You gonna be okay now?

Not in the slightest. I plan on dying the moment I'm out of your sight.
