Opposition necessary for growth? It sounds like an argument, however blandly provided, against what his partner said. He wants goals behind what they do, and he doesn't see the trials as having goals. Growth is a vast and vague term, one without judgment or refined scope, yet experiments meant to push growth must by necessity encourage only certain kinds of growths. That is what pressure and opposition provide. This voice, the trials, have an agenda to them. Some sort of goal.

One, it seems, that is not communicated to those it is being enacted upon. V remembers some words about "achieving his potential" on his journey to this place. However, potential itself is another poorly defined term, one that could mean any number of things. Perhaps it is not whether the trials are right or wrong but what they encourage.

He looks at his companion. "What would you need to see reason to participate? For everyone to participate?"
