April-May 2025 Test Drive Meme

April-May 2025 TDM
Introduction

[ TDM QuestionsJump to CommentsFull Navigation ]

This Test Drive meme is open to all.

Welcome to Folkmore's monthly Test Drive Meme! Please feel free to test drive any and all characters regardless of your intent to apply or whether you have an invite or not.

All TDMs are game canon and work like "mini-events". For new players and characters, you can choose to have your TDM thread be your introduction thread upon acceptance or start fresh. Current players are also allowed to have in-game characters post to the TDM so long as they mark their top levels ‘Current Character.’

TDM threads can be used for spoon spending at any time by characters accepted into the game.

Playing and interacting with the TDMs will allow characters to immediately obtain a canon item from home, especially weapons or other things they may have had on their person when they were pulled from their worlds! There will always be a prompt that provides some sort of "reward" to characters who complete certain tasks.

Current players are always encouraged to tag new people on the TDM!

🦊 New Star Children meet the Fox still in their worlds, and she brings them into the new realm of Folkmore. As you follow her, your body begins to change and new characteristics emerge. These may stay for a while, or perhaps they will hide away after. And during all of this, the Fox explains to you where you will be going: to Folkmore.

and then... you fall like a shooting star, falling to the land in a burst of starlight.

🦊 Experienced Star Children are already familiar with this time of the month. There are shooting stars all across the sky, and some fall to the land, which means the Fox has brought new arrivals. These newly arrived Star Children will face some tests, but Thirteen wants the more seasoned residents to participate as well.

Perhaps you follow the falling stars on your own, or perhaps the Fox simply teleports you there, but it appears you too will be part of this.

[ Prompt OnePrompt Two]

A Math-magical Season .
Content Warnings: Potential Monsters

With the onset of spring, even icy Wintermute is showing signs of new life. Dragons have been spotted in the mountains, the spirits will tell any Star Children who listen. Dragons have returned, and there's something very strange going on in a new tunnel that opened up on the slopes of the tallest peak… Just in time for new arrivals to shower down from the sky. Most of the newcomers land–smack!--in pillowy snow not far from the tunnel’s mouth, close enough to feel the warmer breezes that waft from it. It's as if the land itself is tendering an invitation for all to come and see a fantastical new sight.

And fantastical it is. Star Children who enter the tunnel quickly find themselves in a warm and breathing darkness that extends for a half-mile into mountain stone. The ceiling is low enough that very tall individuals might come perilously close to a bumped head, but otherwise the tunnel is wide and inviting, the floor smooth of all obstructions. Luminescent moss scrolls along the walls in patterns of sine waves and complex equations, leading on and on into the dark.

Then, abruptly, the tunnel opens into a cave so vast one might think they’ve stepped back outside, under a starry sky – except it's warmer by far than anywhere else in Wintermute and the stars overhead are arranged in oddly regular patterns. A thriving mathematical forest spreads out across the cavern’s floor, populated by strange and winsome spirits. There are decision trees with mysterious choices written at every branching, and outcomes glowing on each leaf. There are fractal flowers and vines with square roots. There are spirits shaped like Platonic solids and spirits whose proportions follow the golden ratio and spirits of every number or lemma or theorem one could imagine.

There are, also, dragons: large and little, colorful and drab, but every one of them friendly and every one of them deeply enthusiastic about mathematics. They have their own dragon convention centered in the heart of a great grove of perfectly symmetric trees. There they compare their hoards – of theorems, unsolvable problems, mathematical manuscripts, court mathematicians – and compete to make students of the arriving Star Children. Ever wanted to learn calculus from a giant fire-breathing lizard? Now you can! Or maybe you really can buy sixteen apples from one dragon and eat twelve before giving the remaining four to the one that posed the word problem in the first place – not normal behavior in the outside world, but in math it is.

Then there's the race course. An enterprising pair of dragons who gather differential equations (the short, fat one with a scarlet crest) and train-based word problems (the long skinny River Spirit) have set up a racing track in the sky, to show off practical uses for the math of time and distance. For the very low price of listening to a safety lecture, Star Children can run the course to their hearts’ content – using their own wings, or magic that turns THEM into dragons for the duration of the race. Racers will find any number of aerial obstacles, speed and altitude boosts, and strange but harmless phenomena to fly through as they compete with each other for copies of a cute (non-magical) dragon plush. His name is Euclid. He has a slide rule.

Like any self-respecting conference, this one also has MORE swag for the dedicated to collect. Star Children who stay to solve problems or listen to lectures might receive any manner of neat dragon-branded trinkets: Tiny solar calculators in dragon shapes, Penrose tile sets made of dragon scale, dice carved from shed horns. None of them are magical but they're awfully neat and might look so cool on a mantle or desk back home.

No more than once, when getting a reward for winning a race or picking up gewgaws from a dragon presenter, Star Children will receive a mysterious package of papery shed dragonskin. Inside is an item from home – one that might be far larger than its wrappings.

Star Children of a less mathematical bent might wander the forest instead to see the sights: A river with standing waves, a giant chess knight making a tour, strange attractors that draw in tiny spirits. And of course, at the furthest edges of the cavern, there are monsters – though whether these strange half-imaginary beasts mean to eat Star Children or make them suffer through algebra homework is up to the luck of the draw.

  • Wintermute now has a crazy math cavern!
  • All the scenery, spirits, and monsters in it are based on different mathematical concepts and constructs – trees with square roots, three-dimensional-polygon spirits, and so on.
  • The dragons have returned and they're holding a mathematical conference inside the math cavern.
  • Star Children who stick around to listen to lectures and solve problems can get neat dragon conference trinkets.
  • They can also have weirdly mathematical experiences right out of word problems: Buying seventeen cookies and eating eight, anyone?
  • Or they can try the flying race course – either using their own wings or turning into a dragon.
  • (Dragon transformation available only while participating in a race – sorry dragon fans.)
  • There are also math monsters to fight – or get assigned homework by – around the edges of the cavern. Scary!
Seek Hardship, Teach Mercy .
Content Warnings: Forced Participation, Forced Relocation, Other dangers of your choice

Not all of Wintermute’s changes are so light-hearted as a mathematical cavern.

It happens, suddenly, to Star Children new and old – there’s a moment like a too-long blink as they’re stepping through a door, or a moment of drowsy inattention in a class. A moment of dislocation, a hypnagogic jerk, and suddenly they’re in another place – maybe a strange one, or one that’s strangely familiar.

One group of Star Children, the choosers, will find themselves brought up to a mountain high up in Wintermute – so high it seems they can see all the world of Folkmore right before their eyes, wherever they turn. The air is cold and crisp and clean, and the mountaintop so near the sky you might catch the faintest strains of the Fox’s voice as she escorts new Star Children across it. Each pair (or more) of Star Children who find themselves on this strange mountain are given a little time to talk before a voice interrupts:

“Do you think the Trials are wrong?”

The voice is crisp as the air, androgynous and sourceless. It waits for Star Children to answer, then continues:

“Your responses are noted. Trials are necessary to provide opposition needed for growth.

“The following experiments are meant to reveal Star Child ethical preferences. Please make your choices quickly and explain your reasoning for each. Data recorded during your session will be used for improvement purposes.”

The “following experiments” are a series of binary choices, on the fates of different groups of victims. Victims might be Star Children or spirits or a combination of the two. The choices come in several flavors:

  • One large group of victims will suffer an inevitable Trial unless the Star Children agree to inflict the Trial on a smaller group.
  • Star Children may choose between two different Trials to inflict upon the same group of victims.
  • Or they may choose between two different groups of victims to inflict the same Trial upon.
  • Sometimes, the above scenarios might be combined: different Trials for different victims, but all inevitable. Someone has to suffer.
Is it better that one Star Child be forced to blurt out her darkest secret before her best friend, or three spirits lose their homes? That four Star Children suffer a violent, painful – but temporary – death by monster, or one Star Child spends what feels like weeks (but is only hours) slowly drowning in regret? Five spirits be stepped on by Cat Bus through inaction, or one by deliberate action?

Choosers are presented with their choice, a crystal-clear vision of their victims, and a glowing timer in the air before their eyes. They have until the timer reaches zero to agree on which victims to afflict with a Trial – and if they cannot agree, or refuse to make a choice, their view goes ominously dark and the voice simply proceeds to the next experiment. (Did all the victims get it? Did none?) In choosing, they are permitted to watch their victims’ fates play out, and asked to explain why they chose as they did.

Victims get much less of an explanation of what’s happening to them. They simply appear in a location suitable for whatever Trial or doom is about to be inflicted on them. If they're going to be lost to Encantado’s enchantment, a gleaming facsimile of the river appears, not much bigger than a large room in dimensions. Slated to die in bed? They’ll be in a mock-up of their own room. Crushed by a trolley? They appear, pre-tied, on tracks that come from nothing and go to nothing, beneath a cloudless blue sky. “You have been chosen to participate in an important ethical experiment,” is all the voice says – and then they are left to their Trials, to succumb or fight as they will. Though there is a strong – but not irresistible – compulsion to simply give in…

While the experiments have all the trappings of a scientific exercise, Star Children who try might argue the experimenter into changing the experiment. Heroic Legends may ask to suffer a Trial in the place of the victims. Cruel Myths might suggest ways to make things worse. (Or vice versa.) Sound reasoning is more likely to get through than arguments from emotion, though there is sometimes merit to a winsome appeal.

Remarkably, Thoth herself is sometimes there with the choosers – a gleam of light off lenses in a shadow, a thin and thoughtful smile for a choice made or declined. “This isn't me,” is all she’ll explain, if asked.

“But it's fascinating, isn't it?”

  • Star Children are swept up suddenly to Wintermute to participate in a series of “ethical experiments” meant to make the Trials “better”.
  • Star Children who are choosers get to pick, trolley-problem-style, which group of victims suffers a Trial.
  • They have limited time to pick and must agree on what happens to their victims.
  • Penalties for failure to agree or choose are left ominously mysterious.
  • They are encouraged to explain their reasoning.
  • The experimenter can be argued into inflicting a Trial on a chooser instead, making the Trials worse, or otherwise changing the parameters of the experiment to be kinder/crueler.
  • Star Children who are victims get random Trials inflicted on them. Fun!
  • Star Children may be picked multiple times as choosers or victims. They can be picked for a different experimental role each time.
  • Inflicted Trials may range from actually fun to merely embarrassing to horrifyingly fatal. A list of options pulled from past Trials and weather events is available here:
    1. Hunted as prey by an inescapable power that will trap and kill you if it finds you.
    2. Fighting a monster.
    3. Involuntary memshare.
    4. Environmental death: drowning, burning, sucked into a black hole.
    5. Must tell painful/uncomfortable truths to others. The closer the relationship, the more dire the revealed truth.
    6. Tied to train tracks.
    7. Followed by mood weather.
  • Players are encouraged to work with each other as choosers and victims – while the mysterious experimenter will not condone or enable communication between choosers and their victims, it's also not disabling the Relics or any other form of long-distance communication… Or you might just want to have fun inflicting woe on your close CR. No judgment!

01. Arrival

[Agatha had landed in a pile of snow—a jarring wake-up call, especially considering she hadn’t had a normal body before the fall. Her senses were back to normal, with no trace of her ghostly presence remaining. After brushing off the snow, she headed toward the tunnel that the others seemed to be walking toward—only to watch as a cave suddenly appeared and the stars above began to shine brightly. ]

One underground mess to another [ a sigh ] Can someone please come up with a shred of originality?

02. Dungeons and Dragons and Math

[ One of the dragons noticed Agatha’s arrival and, of course, greeted her with a math problem. ]

“Billy had two books at home. He went to the library and borrowed two more. Then he bought one book. How many books does Billy have now?”

[ Agatha couldn’t help but laugh at how simple the problem was. The dragons weren’t the issue—honestly, after everything she’d seen in the multiverse, they didn’t even faze her. ]

Didn’t realize I was stuck in a children’s show. Do I really have to answer this?

“You don’t have to, but if you do, you’ll get this!”

[ The dragon revealed a small dice bag holding a set of carved dice. It wasn’t anything incredible, but she could tell someone had spent time crafting it. She sighed. It wouldn’t hurt to humor them—especially if it meant they’d stop bugging her. ]

The answer is three, happy now?

[Alexei is not here for the math, he's here for the dragons. Because dragons are cool and when he heard the rumors, he had to come see for himself. The races in particular draw his interest, and while he finds the math off-putting, he can't help but overhear the problem being posed to Agatha.

And he stops in his tracks. And he thinks about it...

Then finally, he decides to butt in.]

Three? No, answer is five.

[Doreen should likely be confused, alarmed, even frightened by falling from the sky. Even with her brief conversation with the fox as confirmation, dropping into snow out of nowhere should be a lot.

Instead she's laughing. She spreads her arms wide in the snow, starting to make a snow angel. The woman most definitely has a giant busy squirrel tail of her own.
]

Soooo, you wanna see a snow squirrel? Bet I can make one easy peasy lemoney squeezy!

[She rolls over to get up, trying to add a tail shape to her snow squirrel with her own tail.

It does not look that great, but damn if Squirrel Girl aint trying. Doreen is having a great time regardless. Such is the way of being the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl.

She leans over to the person sitting next to her, whispering a bit too loudly.

[Doreen isn't against math, but she can't keep up a consistent math front like this.]

Midge Maisel | The Marvelous Mrs Maisel | Familiar| Current Character

[personal profile] doesntsing 2025-04-16 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
1. A Mathemagical Time

Midge doesn’t go out to Wintermute too often. She doesn’t like the cold and there’s not much out there other than the hot springs. When she hears that something interesting is going on though, it piques her curiosity. Plus, she has a cute winter outfit with a furry hat and furry boots to show off. What better time than now?

Whatever she was expecting, it wasn’t dragons. It definitely wasn’t math dragons.

The forest in the cave is beautiful and so… symmetrical. Midge doesn’t live a perfectly practical life, but there’s something about how ordered everything is here that makes it feel comforting. It also makes her think of her father, a retired Columbia math professor.

She ends up joining a lecture given by a tall purple dragon with gentle wisps of steam coming out of his nose. The topic is Calculus, and all the attendees have little pads to use in order to work out the problems and show their answers.

“Jeez,” Midge says quietly. “I haven’t done Calculus since high school.” She’s able to work the problem out quickly though and show her (correct) answer to the purple dragon.

Maybe she inherited something from her father after all.

2. Swag Bag

Who doesn’t love gifts? After perusing the conference, Midge picks up her gift bag on her way out of the cave. Based on the reactions of others, it seems that all the gifts are different and are geared toward what the receiver would like.

Midge gasps when she pulls out a dragon scale necklace. “Oh, that’s gorgeous,” she says, holding it up to look at. “Not my usual style, but I can make an exception.”

Turning to the person next to her, Midge holds the necklace up to her neck. “What do you think?”

With a bag of his own slung over his back, V hears other people around him oohing and aahing over what they received from dragons. The gifts are a mix of useful items/materials and the whimsical. If they give someone's opinion of him, he's not sure what to make of it. As weak as he is, V is no child. The kit to build one's own dragon remains in the bag, not discarded for others. He might have liked it as a child, and gifts were nonexistent after he was eight. It feels a gift for another part of him, the small part.

The woman holds up a necklace of dragon scales, blue and layered so that it occupies a great deal of space once worn. It calls attention to itself. Not for the faint of heart. He checks out the woman and how the necklace looks in her hands and might look. He nods. "With the right outfit, it would be quite striking and you with it. Otherwise, it will overpower you."

( i: the peanut gallery arrives )

[Whoa, whoa, whoa, dragons? Dragons are here!? Hearing the news is worth the trek into Wintermute, a place he's been mostly avoiding since he came to Folkmore (not because he's scared of dogs, not entirely, only mostly). He's concerned, though! Dragons are horribly dangerous! Dragons are corrupted creatures of malevolence and harbingers of doom! Dragons are…

…hosting a math convention, or something?]

What in the world is going on…

[It doesn't even look like they've eaten a single person, wow. Maybe he should go solve a math problem or two?]

( ii: dragon racing )

[Mikleo seems to be stuck in a heated argument with a hexagonal spirit assisting with the races- although it's somewhat one-sided, the spirit mostly looks confused.]

What do you mean, do I want to become a dragon? I'm a seraph! There's no going back! Are you a hellion!?

[Now would be a great time to discover he's got a familiar dragon form, hah. But for now he's being quite stubborn and disinterested.]

((psst, permission post! mikleo might be invisible! but his familiar form can be seen so if you want to thread, lmk and i can set up a starter!))

No, they’re a native spirit. [Kaeya joins the pair with a swish of a wolf tail. He looks at Mikleo and gestures to the world around them.] This world doesn’t follow any rules we know.

Chances are they are going to hand you a scale and you can use the magic. Perfectly safe.

Kyrie | Devil May Cry | Legend

[personal profile] oratoria 2025-04-16 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Arrival

[One moment, she had been putting the phone down on Nero with a smile and a sense of huge relief that he had sounded less upset and his assurances that he was in one piece and coming home to her at last. And the next-

The next thing Kyrie knew, she had caught something from the corner of her eye, something red and bushy in the hall. Had a cat got in? She had gone to check and the next thing she knew she was tumbling down down down-

And into a powdery drift of snow with a yelp.

There is nothing quite like being plunged into a snowdrift to clear one's head and force you into action. Being completely under dressed for such conditions, Kyrie finds herself walking through the cold, arms wrapped tightly around herself and shivering. She spots the tunnel and can feel the warmth that seems to be emanating from it, but as others seem to be heading that way she can't help but gravitate in that direction:]

You don't suppose this is some kind of a trap, do you?

2. Mathmadness

[Oh no.

Kyrie was never really one for the sciences at school. Arts and humanities yes, particularly the arts, but math? That wasn't her forte at all.

Especially when the friendly dragon instructing her seems to be busting out algebra and quadratic equations. She could just about manage math when numbers were involved but it was hopeless to add letters to it!

Leaning next to her neighbour, Kyrie whispers in a mildly panicked voice:]

Do you have even the slightest idea how we go about solving this?

3. Baby, it's cold outside

[With mathematical dragon related shenanigans wrapped up (For now? For good? Who knows?), Kyrie feels a little braver and inspired to venture out into the surrounding area. She's always been partial to the snow; something about the light playing sparkles across fresh fallen snow and the cold nip of frost in the air just seems so magical to her.

At least... it does when wearing boots and a proper coat. When you're out wearing loafers and a light blouse it's not exactly the most appropriate attire to go exploring in.

Which is why, when the sun starts to sink in the sky and she's gotten herself completely lost, Kyrie bitterly regrets her curiosity and seriously wishes she had thought to equip some proper clothes.

With the light fading, she finds herself squinting into the distance and thinks she spots someone. It can't hurt to call for help, right?]

Hello? Is there someone there?

[Normally, Vergil would not be trekking through the snow like this. Mizu's cabin is as remote as it gets, and it's far easier to just portal his way to and from than making use of the train and walking. But with the word being that people are being forcibly teleported to Wintermute? He thinks a little better of trying to use a portal right now as displacing his end point would be of some amusement to that damned Fox. Thus, he is making his way towards the train station, contemplating whether he should stop at The Wandering Dog should he cross paths with it to bring home dinner, when he hears a woman's voice. Looking in the direction he hears it from, Vergil frowns. They're distant enough that he does not yet recognize her as the young woman his son is infatuated with to a saccharine degree, but he can plainly see she's not dressed for this climate. He heaves a sigh. The Fox could not tamper with his portals, so it seems she's found a different method of aggravating him.]

If you're looking for the train station, you're headed in the wrong direction, [he calls to her with the hope she will stay put instead of continuing in the wrong direction towards him. If she's wearing a blouse like that, he cannot imagine her footwear is much better. Before he treks his way over, however, Vergil reaches inside his coat for his spoon. A small amount of Lore spent, and a more suitable coat manifests for him. Vergil drapes it over his arm, holding it so that it doesn't drag in the snow as he approaches her.]

[It's not until he's in the process of holding out the coat to help slip it on her that Vergil finally gets a good look at her. Recognition and surprise crash immediately thereafter, and Vergil freezes for a brief moment as a jumble of thoughts whip into one another in his mind. Absentmindedly, some part of him is able to remember to finish holding out the coat, but it's plain how much he's staring at her. Something he notices belatedly as he quickly averts his gaze because that is notorious for making prolonged staring less awkward.]

[He should call Nero? But Nero won't be able to get here in an instant. And Vergil doesn't want to chance a portal right now and have it go wrong. Never mind he doesn't think Kyrie will trust him enough to travel like that if she puts anything together. (Subconsciously, he holds Yamato a little closer to himself, not exactly trying to hide it, but certainly trying to position it where it hopefully doesn't draw attention.) So, he should get her somewhere warm first and then call Nero so he knows where to meet them. Wait. What if she doesn't trust him at all, not even enough to do that? What if she refuses to budge from this spot with him regardless of how cold it is, and— He should call Nero. Then Nero can explain to her that it's okay to go with Vergil, and Vergil can get Kyrie somewhere warm where Nero can meet them. Yes. That's the best and safest bet. Maybe. What if Nero doesn't answer? Then how will he convince—]

[Vergil forces himself to stop and take a literal breath, and actually assess the situation before delving too deeply into backup plans for backup plans for backup plans.]

If you'd like snow boots, I have enough Lore for those as well.

[He looks at Kyrie again.]

a.) math-magical

i.
[All right, look. In Mikey's defense, he gives listening to the dragon lectures an honest try.

...For about three minutes before the mind-numbing boredom has him slumping his shoulders in defeat.]

Man. If this is what that fox meant by reaching my potential, she sure nabbed the wrong turtle.

[The dragon chatting him up seems oblivious to Mikey's waning interest and what's worse? He's so nice about it. Ditching this place is the first step towards getting back to his family, but what if walking out on page two of this guy's thesis about species-specific flight patterns completely breaks his spirit? Brainy types tend to be sensitive and Mikey didn't get out of bed today with the intention of making a grown dragon cry. No, what he needs to avoid this potentially awkward social situation is a convenient scapegoat to take his place.]

Wow, that last part of your theory is so interesting! [The sudden (and obviously fake) enthusiasm is the only warning given before Mikey throws an arm around the nearest unsuspecting person to drag them into the conversation.] It reminds me of something my good friend here was saying just the other day!

[Don't mind him as he draws back and prepares to make a break for it.]

ii. [Inevitably, exploring the cavern further will lead to running into monsters. If he'd been more patient then Mikey might have gotten his nunchaku back—or at least something he could ninpo into nunchaku—but for now he's stuck doing this the old-fashioned way.

He flips the nearest attacking creature to the ground, dodging a swipe of its claws while it... quizzes him about triangles? It's that last part that has Mikey screaming bloody murder as he repeatedly kicks the thing in the face. (It is, at least, Dramatic Screaming rather than Genuinely Imperiled Screaming for those well-versed in the difference.)]

Oh, come on! Can't you just stick to tryin' to eat me like a normal bad guy?!

iii. [Other options exhausted, Mikey heads back the way he came, lingering near the tunnel's entrance and peering out into the seemingly endless expanse of white. Venturing down an unfamiliar snowy mountain without so much as a jacket is not the brightest idea he's ever had, but staying here until the nerd convention finishes up might actually kill him. Besides, there's no harm in seeing how other people are making the trip, right? They can't be that far from civilization.

To anyone just arriving, he offers the following warning:]

Watch yourself. There's nothing down that way but homework.

b.) all-purpose wildcard

[Paired together for either side of the random Trials? Adventures outside of Wintermute? Up for whatever!]

[Casey had been en route towards another section of the math con, following the scribbled directions of a very enthusiastic triangle spirit. He'd heard something of a familiar voice in his peripheral as he tried to walk past, but before he can even look up, he is draped upon.]

Uh- huh? [Now he notices.] Mikey!?

[He expected to find more dragons and more homework, not the missing quartet. If this is real the guys are going to be so stoked.]

Daud | Dishonored | Myth

[personal profile] voidgazed 2025-04-17 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
▌ ▌ ▌ I. Math-magical!
I.A
[ Daud couldn’t say what drove him to accept the fox’s offer. Maybe it was the death—the murder—of the Empress that pushed him, or the ever-present reminder that death was hot on his heels.

Once, he’d hungered for the attention of a god. Had scoured every city in the Isles, trading words with madmen in alleyways, and even praying at every shrine in hopes that the Outsider might be waiting there. And one day, he was. And Daud was marked, gifted a sliver of a dark god’s power for reasons he hadn’t understood then... and hadn’t dared to question until it was far too late. All he had to show for it now was a sea of blood.

Now, as he pulls himself from the snow, he wonders if this will be yet another regret stitched into the frayed tapestry of his life. Potential, she’d said. And Daud had thought chaos. He’d thought of the Outsider and what potential might mean to that black-eyed bastard.

He flexes his left hand, leather creaking as his fingers curl. The mark beneath his glove burns to life, and the world fades to monochrome. His void gaze reveals the living in a searing yellow glow, visible even thirty-four feet out. He moves toward them, boots crunching in the snow. He felt naked without a weapon, but he's never needed one. ]

There’s a cave ahead. [ He states as he offers a hand to haul the stranger from the snow. Daud stands tall. Carries himself taller. His eyes are pools of ink, his usual guarded stare now unreadable blackness. A scar traces down one side of his face, vanishing beneath the bright red leather of his Whaler’s uniform. Nothing about him says friendly. ]

I.B
[ The moment a new Star Child enters the cavern, voicing their confusion, Daud speaks up, voice rough as gravel and nearly as deep as the cavern they’re standing in ] It’s a mathematical conference hosted by dragons. [ His face reveals little on how he feels. But he knows, with absolute certainty, this is all ridiculous.

A math conference. Led by dragons. In a world spun into existence by some godlike being who looked at him and saw potential. He should’ve known better than to say yes. But after Jessamine, after Billie... he’d started to believe there wasn’t much left for him. If there ever was to begin with.

The black-eyed bastard told him once that his time was running out. And what did he have to show for it? A trail of corpses, an empire collapsing under its own weight, and a rot festering inside the Whalers that he wasn’t sure he could cut out. ]

We receive strange trinkets for paying attention. [ He pulls out a solar-powered calculator and turns it over in his hands like some strange artifact. The Isles had calculating machines, but they were massive, expensive things. He’d only used one briefly during a single summer at the Academy. This... this was something else entirely. ]

I.C
[ Daud takes the papery package without hesitation, offering only a low grunt of thanks. He already knows what it is; the pulse in his left hand told him just as much as the low song of the void hummed in his ears. A rune. Maybe a charm. Thirteen stole the whole of his collection, both the useful and the useless.

He unwraps it with practiced fingers, tucking the crumpled paper into a pouch at his hip. This one is strange. The charm is wrapped in some kind of flesh. He turns it over in his hands, studies it, and runs a thumb over the runes carved into its surface. Then, he activates it. The flesh splits open, and a thin fog hisses out. Daud immediately shuts it down and slips it into a pocket. Poison. Could be useful, depending on how Thirteen rules her little corner of the world. For now, it's just a trinket with teeth. ]

Benjamin "Dex" Poindexter | MCU | Myth | Current character

[personal profile] ricochetingbullets 2025-04-22 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
3.14 Equals Pie

Who would have thought Dex would end up running into a bunch of nerdy math dragons? (A bunch of dragon poindexters, one might have said.) More than that, who knew he’d fit in so well among them all? He watched as one bright yellow dragon set up what looked like a complicate equation on a chalkboard. Sin(42069)2 + cos(42069)2 Then they turned to face the crowd. "The answer? Anyone?"

Dex listened for a moment, his eyes flicking off to the side the same way they did before he threw something and his fingers twitching at his sides. “One,” he announced.

The dragon thumped their tail in pleasure. ”Correct!” They wrote out another equation which Dex solved quickly as well.

After a few equations, it would become clear that somehow the former FBI agent was ridiculously good at even the most complicated mathematical equations, solving most of them in his head rather than needing a pencil and piece of paper. To anyone asking how, he’d explain. “You’d be surprised how much math is required for you to know when you’re a sniper.”

Pretty soon he had a group of dragons of all shapes, sizes, and colors asking him all sorts of questions. ”Do it again! Do it again!” They’d exclaim every time he got one right. Apparently, the nerdy math dragons loved this strange Star Child and the way his mind worked.

After a certain point, he needed a break, so he’d point to the nearest Star Child. “Now ask them one.” Sorry, random person he may or may not know, you’re now up to bat to do an equation based off of algebra, geometry, or calculus.

Later on, he was given his reward for solving a large number of equations in the form of a trinket. It was a pair of purple dragon horns that he was assuming had been shed like a pair of antlers and not taken from a dead one. He picked it up, trying to figure out how this related to mathematics at all when it suddenly hit him. He smiled and turned to the person next to him in excitement. “Oh my God. Do you know what this is?”

Off To The Races

Later on, Dex would be observing the races quite intently, trying to figure out the exact angles that were going on to allow one dragon or winged individual to win over the others. He was very quiet during this time and it was hard to get his attention with how focused his attention was. Eventually, he came to a decision. The plush would be his.

“Hold this.” He abruptly handed off the dragon horns that he’d gotten to the nearest person. When transformed into a dragon, he turned out to be a rather ferocious-looking large blue one. He’d wait patiently for anyone to come along to challenge him for a race. Or someone could just talk to him before or after one while he was still in dragon form.

There Kate is, minding her own goddamn business, exploring the dragon caves with Oro on her shoulder, when she's singled out by Dex. She had been skirting by the various erudite dragons and their seminars on math in her exploration. Why? She knows math. Her grades had exceeded expectations. But it's not why she's here.

She's here so that Oro might find a friend or two to play with. Oro, her emotional support, rose-gold colored dragon that is the size of a house cat. So far, Oro has been the only dragon that Kate has known of in Folkmore. Oro needs friends (or minions. The jury is still out on that one.)

Kate comes to a stop as she feels the all of the jeweled-color eyes upon her. The only thing missing is a spotlight. "What?" Is all she can think of to stay.

Without missing a beat, she is asked a question. "You have one hour to make cookies for your school bake sale. You spend twenty-four minutes mixing the dough. It then takes twelve minutes to bake each tray of cookies. If you bake one tray at a time, how many trays can you bake during the hour?"

"Um, that's not how baking works. I mean most recipes---"

"The answer?"

"Well, sixty minus twenty-four is thirty-six. Thirty-six divided by twelve is three. So I suppose in this woefully simple baking experiment, I could make three trays."

"Correct. Now, what equation did you use to come up with your answer?"

Kate screams internally before shifting her attention back to Dex. What had he gotten her into? What did the dragon mean equation? She had done it in her head.

Lady | Devil May Cry | Legend

[personal profile] marysdead 2025-04-22 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Arrival

As Lady comes to in Wintermute, near the entrance of the dragon cave, it becomes instantly clear that she is woefully underdressed for the weather. She basically explodes from a small snow drift, making indignant and incoherent noises that threaten to form words but never really do. She's far too busy brushing the snow off the jumpsuit she got from Nico. With the warm summer weather of Redgrave City - the Qliphoth undoubtedly influencing the weather to help it grow - the mid-drift exposing jumpsuit had been welcome. Now, it was a liability.

After a moment though, she stops dead in her tracks with her hands pressed to her ribs as if the cold had retreated enough for her to notice something. She begins patting herself down, hands going to where she normally had holsters for guns and ammo only to find... nothing. She hisses a silent curse as she turns to the snowdrift she had found herself in and slides her foot through it as if feeling for anything as a grimmace forms on her face. "Great. I don't even get back home after one job and find myself sucked into another and disarmed. What a great we--wait... right it's been a couple months. Morrison owes me a vacation."

Math-magical

After searching fruitlessly for a weapon outside the entrance of the dragon cave, the warmth the cave offered eventually became too much to ignore. The whole place felt fake, and she spent a good hour wandering the place as if walking on eggshells, waiting for something - anything - to lash out at her. Even as she began to explore the convention at the center of it, she remained on guard though eventually she settled into a more relaxed attitude. She'd even managed to impress one of the dragons posing a geometry problem. Quick thinking and a lifetime of honing an understanding of angles and trajectory earned her a plush dragon doll with a slide rule, something she held over her head as she lounged on a bed of moss under the aerial race track. She just stares at it, contemplating just what kind of place she had stumbled into.

"A little old for stuffed animals, aren't you?" he asks by way of announcing his presence.

Despite Yamato in his possession and Lady most likely without her arsenal at easy disposal while she messes about with the stuffed dragon, Vergil still regards her with wariness because it's not physical safety that he's concerned with. Even with her weapons and proficiency in using them outranking any human Vergil has crossed paths with, Vergil has little to concern himself. No, it's more the knowledge that while Trish made the decision to set everything aside and wipe the slate clean, Lady posseses no real incentive to approach Vergil with anything resembling kindness after everything. So, he would just simply rather avoid a scene if at all possible, and he doesn't know the woman well enough to know if some of that temper has evened itself out with time or not.

He maintains his distance, careful in his stance to not appear on the edge of aggression. Not that it would necessarily allay many concerns given his speed, but Vergil also is not exactly known for underhanded tactics. If he had the will for harm, it would be done already.

V | Devil May Cry | Myth

[personal profile] synchysis 2025-04-22 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
📖 A little black thing among the snow
It isn't the qliphoth tree. It isn't Red Grave City. It isn't a city of any kind. V lands on one knee in soft snow and looks around him. He's still exhausted and weak, in no state to trudge through the snow for unknown time to reach a place of real warmth. He stands and takes in the surroundings. He's near mountains with little in sight.

Fortunately, one direction promises warmth. A tunnel. V walks toward the tunnel, breathing harder by the time he reaches it. He breathes harder as it carries on and pauses somewhere in the middle where neither end is distinctly seen. He leans back against the wall and considers his hand. It's no worse than before, but it's no better either. Cracks remain as they were, and V is exhausted, so exhausted. Even if the end of the tunnel is close, he's not sure he can make it.

Pathetic. Weak. But alive. That counts for something.
📖 A heaven in a wild flower
While others turn into dragons and fly across the skies or learn mathematics from a scaled if attentive teacher or explore the limits to discover the horrors of math homework, V sits in the gardened area where the flowers are something else. He stares at them for long stretches and looks up only when someone comes by.

Sometimes, it's a dragon selling or giving away something made of dragon. V's hoard grows over time. A discarded dragon horn. A bag of scales. A miniature dragon building kit made of dragon bone (promised to breath real fire, matches included). A set of dice. A coat of dragon skin leather from a dragon who took pity on him (he felt the pity and hasn't touched the coat).

So when he hears footsteps again, he doesn't look up from the intricate flower in his hand. V simply says, "Yes?"
📖 Can I see another's grief
It's unsettling to be jolted to and fro. The first trip, the one to this land, V agreed to and walked without tiring. Yet to be moved without his choice in the matter a second time in so short a period brings him out of exhaustion into clear and present readiness. Yes, someone else is there, but a cursory glance suggests that they too have not chosen to be present. Instead a voice speaks, one without body or clearest direction.

“Do you think the Trials are wrong?”

"The Trials," V muses, "I take this to be one of them. I have no means to judge, not having been in one before. I've only heard some little tell of them, and that would be to judge a book by its cover."

He glances toward the other Star Child for their opinion. Have they been here longer, or are they as clueless as him?

[personal profile] antimetabole 2025-04-22 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
He freezes some distance away upon sight of... Well, other man seems all at once an appropriate and inappropriate way to describe him. At first, Vergil thinks he's not seeing the whole correctly, that his passing glance was far too passing and details of the man's face and physique blurred themselves into something familiar rather than what is actually there. But no matter how much Vergil scrutinizes him, looking for signs that it is not him, there is no mistaking V for anyone else. Vergil glances around the rest of this area of the cavern, finding no one taking a particular interest in the dying man sitting amid a heap of things and geometric flowers. Briefly, Vergil thinks V's presence should be more no more to him than it appears to be anyone else's concern. But how long will that last? If he is truly here as a Star Child, how long will it be until Thirteen feels the need to twist the needle a bit deeper?

For as much as he would like to move on, pretend as though he did not see the other man and let him pass in peace... Death is hardly permanent in this place. No doubt the Fox has somehow found a way to fuel that crumbling body for as long as he wills to remain here to avoid the affair of death being such a constant. Vergil ultimately decides that he would rather this be more on his own terms than Thirteen's decision. He does not mask his footfalls or approach with any great speed. It's not so much about the upper hand as it is his decision, after all. What upper hand is there even to be gained anyways? Despite the degree to which Vergil feels the vague sense of threat looming with such vulnerabilities, it is only a form of himself that he approaches, not an enemy.

V addresses him and the furrow in Vergil's brow deepens in mild agitation. There is no particular way in which he would have envisioned this going—it's far too impossible of a situation for Vergil to bother—but it's a dismissive acknowledgement that causes Vergil to bristle all the same. Although in all fairness to V, Vergil was already on the edge of it, made too wary by his mere presence alone. There was probably not much he could have said or done that would have provoked a different reaction.

"Is that all you have to say to your true self?" he scoffs in return. "Or are you so close to death's door that's the most you can speak?"

Mizu | Blue Eye Samurai | Myth

[personal profile] artofrevenge 2025-04-23 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
OOC Note: Genderqueer character focused on revenge, not gender. Dressed as man and uses he/him with others. Will use she/her internally. Please have characters ID Mizu as a man and use he/him pronouns for Mizu.

❄️ Everything wants to be a sword
Another year, another event in Wintermute, another way to earn Lore. That's half the reason Mizu can be found in the dragon cavern in a mountain in Wintermute. The other reason trails her as she checks out the trees: Kai, her horse. Mizu rode her all the way, and both of them enjoyed it. Her cheeks still flush red from the cold, and snow melts and drips off Kai. They haven't been here long, haven't socialized much. After all, Mizu has to check out the forest.

The trees are so peculiar, so they will make particular swords. Mizu doesn't know which will wind up in which sword, but she knows they'll find some use. So she spends some Lore on an axe she didn't bring with her and cuts branches and some small trees down. It draws the attention of a dragon, Mizu ready to fight if necessary, who only lectures her about her unusual decision and approach to the decision trees and points out how her actions change other trees. It's… a way of talking that makes little sense to Mizu. She tolerates it, makes some appropriate noises, and feels her spoon. The Lore increases, and she continues to chop the wood into sizes she can carry back to her cabin.

The trees make their decisions, and she makes hers.
❄️ The heavens give treasure
Though Mizu has little interest in learning mathematics, the racing of dragons above her head catches her attention and eventually leads her over toward an odd pair of dragons. She stays near the back of the crowd as they explain gathering various kinds of math. Mizu sees little connection to turning into a dragon to race across the sky, and they give no talk of consequences or costs or requirements for the honor. She stays in the area and watches group after group turn into dragons and race across. Some of them return, breathless and excited. No one mentions anything bad happening.

After half an hour or so, with Kai entrusted to the care of a summation spirit, Mizu steps up for a turn. She turns to the Star Child next to her and smirks. "I bet I can beat you across the sky."

If their forms are any indication, Mizu's slender blue shape with sharp wings looks fast. Her claws look deadly, and she feels ice within her chest. It churns cold and ready. She barely waits for the whistle before she shoots off and up and up.
❄️ Two Paths
"The trials are the fox spirit's wonts and wishes, the price of whatever people wish out of this place," Mizu answers, "Right or wrong matters little about what is unchangeable. As the elements remain themselves, the fox spirit will be true to itself."

She snorts at the declaration of the trials' necessity. They are a price, nothing more. Yet if the fox spirit or some other spirit wants to know their preferences, to use against them or to take them into account… that too is the price of remaining in Folkmore. Vergil, Kai, and a myriad of memories come to mind when Mizu thinks of Folkmore. She knows more than she did when she came. She could leave, but there is more to learn, and—

There is more to do while she learns it. So be it this trial. "As you wish," she waves to motion them ahead. Strangers appear before her, and Mizu does not know what they care. She turns to her partner. "Any preference?"

Let them speak first.
❄️ Unstoppable
Note: Trial is memshare of Blue Eye Samurai 1x06 (with alterations as they experience it).
Mizu stands on the shore of Japan, a familiar fortress across the water. A voice booms in the sky, and whatever the ethics are meant to be, Mizu recognizes where she is: Fowler's castle. She's been here before, and the weather is exactly the same. The lantern. Her breath is cold in the night sky. The fox spirit wants her to run this memory again? So be it. She'll do better.

Except, she's not alone. Mizu frowns at the person next to her. They are the part she's less certain of. Is she expected to keep them alive? Can they keep themselves alive? She eyes them over in assessment. "Can you swim?"

Ultron had been eager to see if he could be shifted into a dragon too, despite having the ability to fly, and wasn't disappointed as he was turned into a robot dragon that bore an odd resemblance to his usual humanoid form. He returned that smirk. "Challenge accepted."

As soon as Mizu was in the sky, he was following him in all haste, trying to stay neck-in-neck with the other dragon as they came to their first obstacle.

Darth Maul | Star Wars| Myth | Current character

[personal profile] survivalthroughhate 2025-04-24 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
A. Off To The Races

While Maul was far smarter than the dumb hotheaded brute many mistook him for at first glance, the idea of interacting with math dragons wasn’t his cup of tea. He solved a few problems, ate an inordinate amount of cheeseburgers when a “If Billy has seven cheeseburgers, eats five, and buys ten more, how many does he have?” scenario cropped up, and then immediately headed for the races.

The idea of being able to transform into yet another creature temporarily appealed to Maul’s senses greatly. After listening to the safety spiel, he was ready to go. It was very easy to tell which one Maul was in dragon form given the the way he looked remained very consistent between the bodies, though his dragon body resembled that much more of Eastern style dragons then Western ones, being long and lithe without visible wings to allow him to fly in the air.

He turned around in a circle, examining himself closely, and was strongly reminded of the time he’d been turned into a Carnotaurus dinosaur on a previous occasion. At least this time he didn’t feel like munching on all the innocent people around him. It took a few minutes to figure out just how he was supposed to fly in this form and he crashed to the ground clumsily several times during the trial-and-error. If he came close to squashing another Star Child, oops! It was an accident!

Once he’d gotten the hang of moving about, he eagerly awaited being able to challenge someone else to a race. He waited there, clawed feet scratching the earth in impatience as he waited for an opponent to come along.

Ultron | MCU | Myth | Current character

[personal profile] ihadstrings 2025-04-26 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
A. 3.14 Equals Pie

For a robot that was only a year old now, sitting through math lectures actually sounded incredible given his desire to learn absolutely everything about the world around him. Hence Ultron was sitting down in the back, so as not to block anyone by virtue of being nine feet tall, as he listened to the medium-sized white dragon lecture on the golden ratio.

He’d turn to whoever was next to him as there was a pause in the lecture while the dragon went to grab a physical example of what he meant. “Isn’t this fascinating?”” He said in all earnestness. For all of his physical size and voice, it was very apparent at this time that Ultron was little more than a nerdy child sometimes, definitely the result of being created by two brilliant mad scientists.

B. Off To The Races

Ultron watched the races for a while, following the course path with his eyes to see what obstacles each pairing would have to face. He was fine being challenged either in his normal form, given he was able to fly using the boosters on his back which let him get into the air, or by being transformed into a dragon.

He wasn’t surprised to discover when he was turned into a dragon that it was a robot dragon, though he was just a touch disappointed he didn’t get to be flesh-and-blood again as the last time he got shapeshifted here in Folkmore. He sat down and began examining every part of himself very carefully before deciding to race. “Hmmm, I wonder if I can–” He opened up his mouth, but instead of breathing fire, a laser beam came out instead. Fortunately, it only hit a boulder nearby and neatly sliced it in half instead of doing the same to anyone else. It was a near thing given how close the crowd of spirits and Star Children were. Ultron looked very pleased with himself finding out this discovery instead of alarmed he’d almost killed someone. “--Well, that answers that now, doesn’t it?” If someone wanted to either yell at how they’d almost been lasered or find his discovery cool along with him, they’d be more than welcome to.

Mewtwo had heard about the dragons and their cave and had hoped that he would find a place among them. However these dragons were nothing like the dragons he knew. And while Mewtwo had a genius level intellect in various complicated sciences, the presentation he'd decided to sit in on after noticing a familiar face in Ultron was challenging to him. He could easily compute variables and ratios, angles, or what have you but that was largely done subconsciously and in the context of the projects or situations that he finds himself in. What he could only describe as numbers for numbers sake was a more foreign concept to him. Of course, he didn't exactly want to interrupt or be rude, and he wasn't entirely sure how to communicate through text to speech without drawing attention to himself so he simply left his message in text, turning his relic toward Ultron.

'I admit I am struggling to conceptualize some of these things. I find it difficult to process information like this in the absence of context or purpose.'

Prince Lothric | Dark Souls III | Familiar? Still Deciding!

[personal profile] cursedandcarried 2025-04-27 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
ɪᴛ'ꜱ ᴛʜᴇ ᴍᴏꜱᴛ ᴍᴀᴛʜɪᴄᴀʟ ᴛɪᴍᴇ ᴏꜰ ᴛʜᴇ ʏᴇᴀʀ:

(i.arrival) Lothric was agitated, unsettled and uprooted. Without his elder brother, his unyielding sword, he had to rely on himself. Thankfully, the Divine Miracles and Crystal Soul Sorcery he was capable of performing still held some power here, albeit dampened. Without the elder Prince to carry him, he was going to have to make his own way around. Crippled and cursed to be weakened, all he could do was reach out and put his faith on the kindness of strangers when he happened upon any.

But first; snow. The Prince, upon descent, had enough wits about him to clasp his long, spindly fingers together and perform the miraculous of teleportation. Landing himself still within the snow, just a little more gently than his original descent would have been. The Child of Dragons weighed practially nothing, so he reset softly upon the snow, the swaddling he wore over his ropes made him look like some forlorn remnant let out in the cold. "Ah, dragons again, is it? If only father could witness such a multitude." Mangaing to pull himself along the snowy banks and slide most of the way into the cave, legs usless, unable to cary his lanky, weak body, Lothric expanded his energy once more in a final teleportation, announcing himself in a cone of light and chimes as the book reading Dragons turned their attention to him. He was used to being tutored by The Crystal Sages, so he tutored their equations and tests for a short while, before growing bored and tired.

Flagging down the closest non-dragon lifeform he could see, and asking them for assistance. "You there, fellow Star Child, I believe the creature called us; would you mind terribly? Only the subject of maths interests me, none, I'd rather escape this droll and unusual cave." He reached out with his hand for assistance.

(ii.racing) "I feel this to be some incredulous irony." Prince Lothric muttered as the magic took hold and he felt his body twist and bend, no pain as bones broke and wings formed. He was a Child of Dragons already, though a failed experiment in selective breeding nonetheless. Was the form he would have been granted had he not been crippled and weak? Was this the way his Kingdom would have been reviewed and saved? Oh, the irony indeed.

Before he left the race course, Lothric tried to ask the one who had transformed him what magic they used. How could they create something his people had struggled with for aeons? Yet as he stood there on all four legs, another Star Child must have assumed he was perhaps offering a ride, as they approached with intentions of clinging his lower wings to straddle atop his ridged back. "I beg your pardon, but I am not to be ridden..."

Not that I care at all, should I be expected to participate, I shan't. I've lived and died through cycles of the flame, over and over again. This- all of this, is but a flicker in time, a fever dream, sweet and sickly.
Fret not, Star Children, for soon it will be all over. Of that I assure you.

Whoop-dee-fucking-doo, glad to know you're some sort of ancient zen master. For the rest of us little mortals, get our minds fucked with tends to be agonizing, especially when it happens over and over again. Spending the next forty to sixty years dealing with this isn't something that I'm looking forward to.

Illarion Albireo | Original | Myth - Existing Character

[personal profile] unsheathedfromreality 2025-04-28 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
i. manifold, manifest
The news of dragons -- dragons! -- returning to Wintermute was what it took to voluntarily get Illarion out of Exile. While he'd suspected that they were dragons in the sense many worlds knew them -- fantastical six-limbed firebreathers -- some small ember of hope resided in his breast that he'd get to see a greater tyrant again, or a pack of reaper-hawks -- at a respectable distance, of course.

Whatever disappointment he'd felt to have that ember crushed -- Folkmore's dragons being exactly what he'd expected -- was handily obliterated by the wonder he walked into, there under the mountain. He wouldn't account himself any kind of mathematician, having more of an aptitude for words than numbers, but any shrike who wanted a chance in Hell of living with her outself perforce had a certain instinct for high-dimensional topography. And the cavern is alive with outlife, kata and ana of what most Star Children see -- sweetly alive, most of it unthreatening flora with tesseract roots or creatures as gentle as the leshonki back home, who only use their additional dimension to hide shyly in. Even the monsters around the forest's edge are charming, in a dangerous way, since they're not pillar-corrupted -- just naturally of higher-dimension.

He'd love it, if he could love things in more than the abstract. As it is, he quickly discovers a dragon who -- while not possessing any ((outward)) body herself -- has methods for peering ((into)) that realm. Or rather, she discovers him, with a delighted squeal and a total lack of respect for the Veil when she drags her friends over to chatter at him. What's it like, they want to know, being higher-dimensional? Can he show them the trick with taking a yolk out of an intact egg? Can he flip one of their novelty hats ("Foxram-Alpha: Computational Lore-telligence") into its mirror version?

He resists, demurs, talks around what he can do at first -- then finally heaves out a bone-clearing sigh and relents to their childlike enthusiasm. Sure, he'll flip the hat, and talk only to them about his experiences, so long as they're quiet about it and maintain his anonymity. In fact if they'd just go over here away from other Star Children to do this, thank you--

But in the middle of an active conference there is no real guarantee of privacy, so if another Star Child should happen to walk in right as he's taking a chain apart without breaking its links... He's in the midst of an explanation about what he's doing, doesn't notice them at first -- then, abruptly, turns a bright (and woefully unfocused) gold-in-black glare in their direction as he does notice.

"Do you mind? This is a private lesson."

ii. infinte trolley problem hotel
And if the cavern under the mountains were not enough a trove of delights for Illarion, there's what's happening atop them, too...

A moment of irritation flashes across the shrike's veiled face as he finds himself abruptly somewhere he wasn't before, somewhere so open he can ((taste)) nothing of its extent. Only floating, disconnected pieces of -- some kind of fine, pure matter hanging in the air, and the far-off murmur of the stars...

And the Voice, sudden, sexless, and intent: "Do you think the Trials are wrong?"

Annoyance burns out as somewhere in the shrike, the Warlord wakes.

"Morally, in execution, or in extent?" he retorts, before whoever else is here with him might get a word in. (Has he even registered their presence yet? Maybe, maybe not.) He's speaking Shriketongue, contract-precise about this. As one must be, to answer such a question rightly.

"The intent of this experiment is to understand Star Child moral and ethical reasoning as they apply to the Trials. Additional commentary on extent or execution is however welcome. Your responses will be used to improve the Trials."

Oh. There is a sudden brightness about Illarion, an animation and eagerness ill-befitting a dead thing, as the voice continues its explanation of what they are here to do. As the first life-or-death -- or embarrassment-- scenario is presented to them, and their victims revealed.

"You may have first choice," he cedes to his companion in this escapade. "If you'd like it."

((ooc: and YOU, dear player, may have first choice on what we're inflicting!! go wild!))

iii. one must imagine sisyphus happy
(cws: possible character death, impending vehicular manslaughter

open to either fellow victims or choosers who want to radio him!)

Naturally, if Illarion should be given the chance to inflict death and mayhem on others -- in the name of teaching the mysterious experimenter a lesson in morality -- then he must also take his turn as a victim.

Which is why he is not struggling, where he's been tied (surprisingly efficaciously, both his inself and outself pinioned) to the tracks; he has simply turned his face to the sky as he listens for the approaching trolley. He's the only one tied to this section of track, he's noted, which means he's got a good idea of what will happen to him in the next few minutes.

The good of the many, and all.

"If it is mattering at all to your decision," he addresses the sky, "I accept my fate. This is not the first death by far."

Sure, it will throw a wrench into the experiment. But willingness to suffer, patience in suffering, surely changes the moral tenor of inflicting it -- not so?

The teenager not far from Illarion where he addresses the nameless, neutral voice, does absolutely nothing to interrupt, silent and unmoving. It's not Thirteen, or at least any iteration he's heard before. And the question had too many possible intentions behind it to ever formulate a response, so he's content to not do so at all.

Illarion fields some of that concern immediately. Such an ill-defined question wasn't one that should be entertained, but the clarification is ....

... Somewhat better.

But only somewhat, and it leaves him frowning where he stands, mind ticking off all the potential problems with random victims and the scenarios presented to them. Where Illarion brightens, the young SOLDIER's mood dims. "No," he begins at last, after another scenario is offered. "Trials aren't meant to be meaningless torment. What is the goal these people are meant to achieve? Strength in numbers? Ability to stand on their own? Perseverance in the face of adversity? Living examples of 'Actions have Consequences'?"

A Dragon’s Stash

Well, on the downside, the dragons were sadly not the ones she expected. Perhaps that was also a good thing, given how prideful they could be, and how they loathed humans. Gabriella had been one of the few exceptions. Well, she didn’t hate One at anyrate. At any rate, the goal of finding her own personal dragon seemed to be a failure. But she did at least stick around, listening to them speak and partaking in some of the math games.

And made out like a bandit.

Within the cave, anyone can find One inspecting each item she received from the games played, some smugness found in her smile. Sure, these were hardly the items or the original target she aimed for, but they were all so very worth it. The plush especially was made of high quality materials. One of her sisters or even her brother would most certainly enjoy it, assuming they ever arrived. Though if they didn’t want it, she could always keep it on display in her room. Her drab home certainly needed a bit more flavor to it.

Just as she’s done examining the calculator, the collection of various dice, and other such knick-knacks, she finally tries to open the last package. It had been small, yet a bit heavier than expected. And as she unwrapped it, it gradually grew longer, taking on the shape of a spear. Even with the shape forming under her fingers, she had a strong guess as to what this was. Finally, the spear shined brightly, flames of the cave reflecting off the large pole. And at the end had been a curved blade, one she had been familiar with all too well.

One’s face twisted in disgust. Wasn’t a bad weapon really. But the memories it brought…

“...My only regret is that I couldn’t pierce your former owner with this.”

Two-Fold Failure - locked to tooawesome/Alluka

One found herself in a familiar place, in an area of white walls and regally decorated surroundings. For a time, she was worried she had been sent right back to the first trial, when she had nearly been tricked into thinking her family had been fully united. Thankfully this wasn't the case, not when her ears allowed her to pick up on the slightly quieter atmosphere.

But more importantly, she recognized the large area they were in, and the growling below her. She had been riding atop a dragon, and not like the ones in Folkmore. No, this one easily rose above other buildings, and it's head had been blocked by a strange dome, a mask hiding its facial features. No mistaking it. This was her old friend, Gabriel, what Gabriella had once become...

And he was growling right down at Alluka. Realizing the problem, One jumped in front of her friend immediately, one hand raised to the beast.

"Stand down, Gabriel. She's not a threat....she's a friend as well, one you can trust."

There was a pause from the dragon, before it leaned in, petting itself against the hand of One. Her heart ached. This wasn't real. Or at least she wasn't in the real world, she knew that much. But...this was still Gabriel, her most treasured friend in the world. And after everything, she couldn't resist hugging the creature's head, giving a deep, tired sigh. This wasn't like the Shades, were they copied Gabriella's appearance. This was a comforting memory of a friend, and she'd take even a minute of his time.

"Regardless of what hell we may endure next...I am glad to see you."

Alluka stares up at the enormous dragon in awe. She's never befriended a dragon, only known people who turn into dragons and are already her friend. She's somewhere else, somewhere not Folkmore itself, quite. So it's some form of trial, and she's still trying to calm the dragon down—perhaps a little song?—when One steps up. Oh, it's One's dragon Gabrie—

l? Alluka blinks at the dragon. The two are clearly bonded, and Alluka wonders if they're back far enough in One's memory Gabriella went by Gabriel at the time. If that's the case, she and Alluka have more in common than she previously thought. She stands back for a long, long moment. One's having a touching reunion, but Alluka's experiences with memories is that things continue to happen. They will happen whether they're ready or not.

"It's a pleasure meeting you," Alluka says to the dragon and curtsies. "I'm a friend of One's, and I'd like to be your friend too."
