Reflective surfaces are showing more than Star Children's reflections. It's still there, smiling, winking, or waving back (hey, did you do that? It's fine, don't worry about that). More importantly, a question appears with the reflection. It might be spoken aloud by the tree behind a Star Child or appear in a thought bubble off their reflection. However it appears, it will not disappear until it's answered. It asks: Would you rather...

Should a Star Child avoid answering the question, it follows them around. The environment continues to speak it aloud. It's in the book they read. It's written in the clouds. It's everywhere. The longer it's ignored, the louder, larger, more intrusive it gets—so that it might draw attention or an audience.

As soon as a Star Child answers, they're connected with another Star Child who hears their answer. They may see each other in their reflections, talk or text over their relics, or be near each other when it's answered. Regardless, at least that one person will hear the answer, and with it comes the compulsion to explain the answer. To give at least a little reasoning. Oh, and the urge to ask them a question in return. This compulsion may only last for one question each, or it may last for many. Perhaps it's forgotten altogether in an easy conversation.

For some Star Children, but not all of them, they may find themselves presented literally with completing the situation they are asked about. A non-permanent change situation. Suddenly they're streaming on their relic or in conversation with a friend or at dinner with Thirteen. Who knows! The initial questions appear before Star Children, but they can take it wherever they like. Star Children who complete at least one challenge receive a gold star anywhere from 1 inch to 1 foot across. Touching it gives Star Children a better sense of certainty in themselves. It may be kept, exchanged at Cutting Edge for some other metal, or turned into Thoth for her answer to a would you rather question.

This meme is game canon unless marked otherwise at the start of threads! Threads can be used for spoons and application samples.
Characters are presented a 'would you rather' question first in their reflection, then if unanswered around them wherever they go.
Characters face a strong compulsion to explain their answer... and to ask their partner at least one 'would you rather' question of their own.
Characters may have to complete the question they answered. If they do, they receive a gold star (once only!), which gives them a sense of certainty. It can also be exchanged for metal at Cutting Edge or to ask Thoth a would you rather question.

[ As a greater noble, Mayerling has no reflection, so it catches him off guard to see his own face looking back at him in the bathroom mirror one morning. Still dressed in his pajamas, his hair down as he pulls it back, he's quite the sight—more disheveled than usual, and oh can he see it clearly within his reflection. Yet spoken with it, in someone else's tone, something like D's but not D's, he hears: ]

Would you rather have a perfect day or a good week? A horrible day or a bad week?

[ Though he knows not the source of the question or this strange morning, Mayerling considers the question seriously and provides his reasoning aloud as well. ]

In the length of my life, a day and a week are not so different, so I would choose to have the perfect day, a day that can live with me for an eternity or so long as I live. However, for the same reason, having seen how bad a horrible day can be, I would choose a bad week over a horrible day, so that I might minimize what bad may come to me, at least in its intensity. They are sides of the same coin.

[Altair rarely looked in the mirror. He hated seeing his glowing purple eyes but he paused when he saw an unfamiliar reflection next to his. His eyes narrowed with a suspicious spark yet he still found himself answering.]

I wouldn't trust a perfect day. It wouldn't feel real, but I agree that I would rather have a bad week than a horrible day, especially in this place.

What is it that makes a perfect day? With the person I love and shall wed here, it is so easy to have good days, so easy we may readily slip into a perfect day without any help from our host.

In this place or any other, I have seen the depths days can reach in the worst moments of our lives, and I would rather avoid the worst. Too many tragedies that were not averted.

[ Mayerling speaks openly despite the unusual face in the mirror, though he must admit he's a little disappointed to see his own no longer. It was his first time seeing his reflection after all. ]

[ Altair would gladly trade places with him if he could. He wouldn't miss his own reflection. It felt like he was looking at the past, aside from his purple eyes.

Mayerling's last words resonated painfully with Altair and his glowing eyes burned brighter as his eyes narrowed sadly. ]

I know the feeling.

[ It was one he did not want to discuss with someone he just met and he sharply changed the subject. ]

Imperfection is what makes life beautiful, especially the moments with someone you love. If everything you did or said was perfect it would ruin that.

[ One doesn't need a mirror to see the past or regrets that grow from it. Though Mayerling likely broods more than most Star Children, his life in Folkmore is far busier and engaging than his life back home alone. Oh he kept himself busy maintaining the City of the Night. Those activities held his focus and attention for the time it took to complete them. The rest of the time? There was little else to think about. Folkmore gives him positive and neutral things to ponder.

He inclines his head in recognition and recognizes the turn in conversation. Curious though he is, it's not a topic on which to press. ]

I do not know if there is such a platonic ideal of perfection when it comes to personal connection and relationship. Is there a perfect thing to say? No, I do not believe it could be manufactured. There is only the particular, what is true to yourself and to what you know of them. So we might in our effusion of emotion call it perfect, but it is only the truth, the connection. Those same words would be folly given to another.

Always will we come across the places where we differ or disagree, but again I would not call those imperfections. Those are how we grow, become closer, and demonstrate the strength of our bond. We do not love copies of ourselves, after all, but other people.

[ Altair hadn't found that balance here yet. The relative peace before the monthly trials were nice but he wasn't used to not having to look over his shoulder all the time. What did people even do with all this free time? He had forgotten what it was like but he was trying. Hence why he's having a conversation with a reflection right now.

The way Mayerling described the connection between others reminded Altair of Bellatrix. Their relationship had been far from perfect, but that didn't make it any less precious. The glow in his eyes softened with a ghost of a smile. ]

That's what I meant, although you said it much better than I did.

Different words but the same meaning. I am glad we understand each other and both appreciate the relationships we have in life. Taking things for granted can leave us with regret, even if those we love would not want it for us. Regret too is natural and a sign of there being good things in our lives, at least at one point.

[ The glow in his eyes softly burned brighter as he agreed with a faint sad smile. ]

I don't regret the time I had with Bellatrix. I hope she doesn't either.

[ He didn't mean to say that and he ran his hand through his hair with a sigh. ]

You said you have someone you love here?

[ Bellatrix is a beautiful name, and the way it's said only adds to the beauty. There's a whole history there, but the young man does not look interested in sharing it. The connection may encourage sharing, but Mayerling will not compel the man. ]

Sharon da Silva is my love, my soulmate, my fiance, and in a short time, my wife. She is a treasure, an incredible person who burns brightly for what she believes in and those she loves. There's no one else like her in the worlds.

[ Altair wanted to be able to share the happiness he had with Bellatrix, but there was a lot of hurt as well. Even the reason they got together was complicated. They both desperately needed the other and that desperation blinded them both to each other's pain. It wasn't easy to share those feelings and he appreciated Mayerling not asking him about it.

Altair's eyes softly shined brighter at the way Mayerling described Sharon. He agreed with a faint smile. ]

She is an incredible person. She's a friend of mine. One I didn't think I would find in a place like this. You're lucky to have found someone like her.

[ Even good relationships can be hard to talk about. Mayerling does not discuss his previous partners with most people in Folkmore, even though most of those relationships were good. Whether they ended well or tragically, there's a lot to them that's not easily explainable to strangers. Sharon's heard about them, and she has the context to understand. He loves them all and cherishes them.

Sharon... Sharon is the one he has a relationship with now, something that exists, not only existed. She is a light. ]

You would be hard pressed to find a friend like Sharon in any place. It is your fortune to have found her as well, for friendship as I have love.

I must admit, humans are incredibly good at living and embracing the moment for the precious slip of time it is. I respect that.

[ Altair agreed with a small smile. He knew he was lucky to have found a friend like Sharon.

The soft glow of his eyes hardened slightly with an uncertain flicker.]

Life is too short sometimes.

[Again he didn't want to elaborate on that so he brushed the haunted thought aside with a curious smirk.]

I'm guessing you're not human. You talk like you're ancient.
