April-May 2024 TDM
Introduction
Welcome to Folkmore's monthly Test Drive Meme! Please feel free to test drive any and all characters regardless of your intent to apply or whether you have an invite or not.
All TDMs are game canon and work like "mini-events". For new players and characters, you can choose to have your TDM thread be your introduction thread upon acceptance or start fresh. Current players are also allowed to have in-game characters post to the TDM so long as they mark their top levels ‘Current Character.’
TDM threads can be used for spoon spending at any time by characters accepted into the game.
Playing and interacting with the TDMs will allow characters to immediately obtain canon items from homes especially weapons or other things they may have had on their person when they were pulled from their worlds! There will always be a prompt that provides some sort of "reward" to characters who complete certain tasks.
🦊 New Star Children meet the Fox still in their worlds, and she brings them into the new realm of Folkmore. As you follow her, your body begins to change and new characteristics emerge. These may stay for a while, or perhaps they will hide away after. And during all of this, the Fox explains to you where you will be going: to Folkmore.
and then... you fall like a shooting star, falling to the land in a burst of starlight.
🦊 Experienced Star Children are already familiar with this time of the month. There are shooting stars all across the sky, and some fall to the land, which means the Fox has brought new arrivals. These newly arrived Star Children will face some tests, but Thirteen wants the more seasoned residents to participate as well.
Perhaps you follow the falling stars on your own, or perhaps the Fox simply teleports you there, but it appears you too will be part of this.
Content Warnings: Forced Relocation, Forced Sharing, Potential Violence & Harm
New Star Children arrive in Wintermute. Not at the hot springs, the school, or anywhere else near civilization. They arrive in the middle of white, snowy nowhere. The good news is that Wintermute is no longer dark twenty-four seven. There is enough light to avoid crevasses, blocked up wells, and other dangerous features of the landscape. Further, no one is expected to figure out how to get out of there on their own.
Usually Thoth finds the lost travelers in the cold expanse of Wintermute. However, she's busy exploring the multiverse for new and interesting ideas for technology. Not to fret! She hasn't abandoned ye who've entered here. There's a new emergency lost and found network:
The Wandering Dog food carts are now open twenty-four seven! The dogs work in shifts, but the food remains as delicious as ever. When a Star Child gets lost in Wintermute, another Star Child will happen to be buying food from a Wandering Dog somewhere in Folkmore. One such lucky unlucky Star Child gets transported to the School of Thoth. Specifically, to where the mechanical sled dogs hang out. They receive a warm winter coat over whatever they were wearing and another one on hand for whoever they are rescuing. Then it's off across the snow! Don't worry, non-mushing experts, the dogs know what they're doing and lead the sled right to the designated lost Star Child.
The rescuee gets to lay in the sled for the ride back, wrapped up warm and cozy in their new winter coat (it may be spring, but it's always cold in Wintermute). The sled dogs bring Star Children back to the hot springs, so that they can warm up even more. Alternatively, Star Children can explore the Cutting Edge, the School of Thoth, or something else in Wintermute. However, the Star Children cannot part ways or leave Wintermute immediately.
The sled dogs, yes the whole team, will stay with the pair to enforce this. They may surround the pair like a pack, cuddle pile on top of them, or lay around the edges of a hot spring. No matter how long it takes to realize the dogs are doing this and that there's a reason for it, Star Children will eventually find instructions in one of the dogs' collars: Share something that other people have refused to listen to you about. Everyone ought to be listened to.
Only once both Star Children have shared something with each other will the dogs let them part ways and see, perhaps, the rest of Folkmore.
On the walk to Akhlut Station, Star Children will see plain weapons sticking out of the snow: swords, guns, knives. These are simple, non-magical practical weapons. Experienced Star Children may know to suspect such free offerings, but nothing immediately happens upon picking one up. However, once on the train, the train will be attacked by frost spirits. These icy spirits must either be hacked to pieces until they can no longer reform or melted with fire. Innocent passengers who didn't pick up a weapon may be forced to get involved, but the frost spirits will be most focused on those who picked up weapons.

- Star Children get amazing new winter coats!
- Star Children cannot part ways until they share something others have refused to listen to! The dogs enforce this.
- Simple, non-magical weapons stick out of the snow on the way to the train station.
- Anyone who picks up one of those weapons will see their train get attacked by frost spirits.
Content Warnings: Potential Forced Participation, Potential Harm
Thoth has been listening to any and all ideas people have had around science in the last few months. Whether they were shower thoughts or a discussion between scientific colleagues or anywhere in between, she's made her list and built every one as an experiment. On a human scale. A human test subject scale. Because every idea has merit. That's right: Thoth believes in you.
Posters saying Thoth Needs You! go up around Folkmore. They offer a reward for participating in an experiment. Simply tear off a piece of paper from the bottom of the poster, and at some point in the future, you're in. Now, there might be a little hiccup here or there. These posters are experimental too! So some Star Children who don't tear off a slip might get pulled into an experiment as well. (Who said Thirteen ought to recruit for her trials? Thoth listened… or she tried.) Oh well, at least it's all in the name of science!
Perhaps Star Children need to sing Baby It's Cold Outside to convince the other to stay (it really will be cold outside). Perhaps they have a choice of spinners, buttons, levers, or other devices to interact with. Perhaps they make their way through a maze. Perhaps they try a new contraption. Perhaps they even recognize their own idea come to life! There's a multitude of new tech to try, and it has not been safety tested.
Nothing will explode. Probably. Maybe. Okay, some experiments are definitely going to have explosions. How about pressing that button anyway and finding out if it's this one?
Once Star Children survive the experiment—and they will, Thoth may be a loose cannon of a scientist, but she's ensured that much—they will emerge from one of the School of Thoth's laboratories. Togo, the grey wolf mascot, waits on the other side with an item for each test subject: an item from home. This may even be a weapon or magical item.
No one is left to the cold to fend for themselves. One of the nearby classrooms has been set up as a first aid center. Dog spirits of all sizes, from the smallest Maltipoo spirit to the largest Great Dane spirit, staff a healing clinic and will treat any injuries Star Children received in the experiments (or already sported). They offer hot lemonade—lemon juice, molasses, and hot water—to everyone to warm their soul. Injured Star Children can find a corner to rest by themselves or company with which to discuss their experiments.

- Thoth has built experiments to bring Star Children’s ideas to life.
- Pick a paper tab off a Thoth Needs You! poster to participate. Or don’t. A mishap may bring Star Children there regardless.
- Do science! Be a human experiment! Maybe experience explosions!
- Togo, the Thoth mascot, will have an item from home for every Star Child who participates.
- Dog spirits man (dog?) a first aid center in a nearby classroom.

[Maul thought it sounded like something else was creeping along the train. Ah. Another frost spirit yet. He tightened his grip on the long hilt of his double-bladed lightsaber. As usual, it was clipped at his waist, and the way he grabbed at it made it seem more like an extension of his body than just a mere weapon.]
no subject
[ Yeah... no, there's two of them. One will be coming by the sound of it out of -- that window. Lex cautiously scoots closer to the offending one. ]
no subject
[Maul's face jerked to the side as he heard the sounds of the frost spirit coming near. In one swift movement, he pulled out his lightsaber and lit the blades, each of them tinted an orange closer on the color wheel to red rather than yellow. Then he waited, glancing back at his new companion.]
I eagerly await to see how well you do in battle.
[He'd been a bit too focused on his last opponent to really judge how Lex had fared against the last one he'd been up against.]
no subject
No, no, there's a fight on. ]
Sure thing! But after that, consider telling me about that polearm!
[ Because, indeed, one of the spirits is bursting in through that window. Well, more phasing in, dematerializing as to not break the window's glass and then becoming solid once more to attack with icy claws. The initial strike Lex is able to get out of the way of easily enough, and he pulls himself into a crouched position to get a low swipe with the sword.
Again lamenting he doesn't have his own sword. But still. It does connect, and the force of it -... is more than he expected. Lex doesn't know it, but it's his new Legend status kicking in, making him stronger. Thus, he actually straight up shatters one of this thing's legs with that strike. ... It floats, do that doesn't trip it, but still! ]

Then his own frost spirit materialized in front of him and Maul squared off against them for this new fight. He flipped his saberstaff around with the ease of someone who had used the weapon their entire life from his left hand to his right hand. Then he slashed high up, taking off most of what served as an arm for the creature. It tried to reform itself but discovered to its dismay that the heat coming off the lightsaber meant it melted any part of the spirit the blades touched. Maul continued the dance of battle with the creature, slashing here and there as it went on the defensive and tried to dodge him, searching for a way to attack instead.]
no subject
He is so vulnerable right now. Even these spirits are something which is a threat to him, but if this fight-happy guy is actually the sort to keep going on humanoids, he's in real danger.
He has no reason to really suspect Maul, and he doesn't. It's just... Lex has lived a violent life and it lingers all in the back of his mind. Not much visibly betrays him on that front, but his new Legend status betrays the whirlwind of brief paranoia he feels by making his eyes change from hazel to green.
... And if Maul's the sort of guy who can pick up that shit with the Force there's that too and the player's helping you out I don't know his powerset wellBut either way, he has a more immediate issue. The leg of this ace creature he shattered is reforming and it still has its claws. With no armor, Lex knows he can probably only take two or three hits, one if he's unlucky. He laments that he can't sense his spirits around him. That Linda isn't here. But he'll press the attack anyway, parrying some claw swipes with his sword and then sliding under the floating creature to kick it from behind -
Once more, it flies forward. No, he definitely is stronger than he used to be. ]
no subject
Admittedly, the cramped quarters of the train weren't his ideal conditions for a fight, what with how much his fighting style required agility and acrobatic skills. But he could make it work. He waited until the frost spirit had fallen back again and then used the Force to pull it forward again at top speed, slashing diagonally through where the 'waist' of the creature should have been. Sliced in two, Maul made short work of the rest of it, dismantling the creature until it could no longer reform.
While he'd been fighting, he'd been keeping an eye on Lex as well. He could sense a lot of strong emotions coming from the man, something he wasn't always able to feel from others in Folkmore. It intrigued him, and once his own battle with the latest frost spirit was done, he kept his attention on Lex instead. The Sith Lord noted how well he was able to fight. This Star Child was certainly no slouch in that regards!]

He gets a claw swipe digging into his arm, drawing blood for his trouble. But he does bring the head a little. Okay, he's going to just- he repeats the punch several more times in succession. His embedded sort hadn't gone through but it did give him leverage to keep it pinned. Several more punches later, the ice of the head breaks. And the creature...
He has no idea if this can reform or not. He leaps back off it, as it's not moving for now and looks back to the other, ]
Melt that for me!
no subject
Maul looked around but it looked like they'd defeated all the spirts attacking the train, at least for the moment. Still, Maul kept his saberstaff lit just in case that this wasn't the end of their battle.]
You have some skills in fighting. Are you a warrior where you are from?
no subject
"Warrior" almost makes it sound too dignified. But yeah, something like that!
[ No, perhaps warrior is the perfect word... Lex exhales a little, centering himself with a grin and a roll of his shoulders-- wince. Oh yeah, nom he's got to stem the bleeding on his arm. He grimaces and looks around for some cloth to wrap it. He doesn't really want to rip his shirt. ]
no subject
[He said all this with a lot of dignity and a serious tone. The way he said his name didn't make it clear which if any of the parts were a title or first, middle, and last name.
It was then that he noticed Lex was bleeding, clearly having taken a hit during the fight.]
Come. Let us see if we can find a way to stop that.
no subject
As such, he stands a bit straighter and code switches a little in how he talks, ]
Forgive me, then. I do not know what would be the proper form of address for your personage. Unless it is to be the whole name every time.
[ He holds his arm, because yeah, he got it there and it's bleeding... ah. yes, he nods and opts to follow this guy's lead. ]
My name is Alexander Adams. Though many typically call me Lex informally.
no subject
Very well, Alexander. [Maul was the type of person to often use the full version of someone's name.] You may call me Darth Maul or simply Maul if you prefer.
[He made his way through the train car, tossing aside some of the items which had fallen with the Force. When he saw a bag which had burst open which contained some clothes, he immediately picked one up and began turning it into strips.]
It is no bacta patch but it will stem the tide of the blood. Come here and I will dress it for you.
no subject
Huh.
... He wants to check if any of these clothes fit him too. He kind of resents his current outfit.
Still, this guy is saving him ripping his own clothes more, so, ]
Even so, I appreciate it. I can dress my own wounds, but you do me a favor to help me with this.
no subject
I like fighting. And even when I have a deep hatred of my opponents, there is a healthy dose of respect as well. The world is poorer if a good fighter is taken out of it.
[He liked what he had seen out of Lex so far and wanted to see more. Therefore, it was to his advantage to help the young man out.]
no subject
[ To be fair, the cuts are relatively shallow. A set of double lacerations on his arm taken from the claws of the ice creatures. But he lets the guy do his work!! ]
no subject
[These days, someone usually set Maul off by showing what he thought was a great amount of disrespect, especially when he felt he was due to have it simply by being who he was. He snugly tied off the makeshift bandage.]
There we go. That should hold until you can see a proper healer.
no subject
Still, he nods and, ]
I would not dream of it. [ He lied. But he never would to some noble warrior face, at least. That's a pointlessly aggressive act ]
I appreciate it, though. Hopefully, where this train'll let me off might have such a soul.
no subject
[Maul gave a description of where he could find the rather large and spacious house.]
But don’t mention that I sent you there. They are….less than fond of me at times.
[Really, Maul had been behaving himself better these days, but with all the trauma he’d put them through it was small wonder the Jedi that were in Folkmore figured on giving him a healthy dose of distance most of the time.]
no subject
Understood. I shall keep your secrets.
no subject
He hefted the weapon he'd grabbed over his shoulder, rather cognizant of where the blade was at all times.]
This is where I shall leave you then.
no subject
Yeah, yeah. I'll probably be getting off here too. But I don't know where I'm going and you do, so we're probably to part ways here.
no subject
[Then off Maul went. As far as meeting new people in this enchanted place, getting into the middle of a battle with them honestly was one of the more fun ways he'd found.]
