It's. A 20th century dating thing. Say you're going on a date with someone for the first time and you want to be able to leave graciously if they are picking their teeth at the table or a Mets fan or even worse. You get a friend to send you a text at a specified time.
'Oh no,' you say. 'I have to go. My friend needs me, it's an emergency.'
But if it's fine, you text your friend back that it's fine and you stay.
