August-September 2024 Test Drive Meme

August-September 2024 TDM
Introduction

[ TDM QuestionsJump to CommentsFull Navigation ]

This Test Drive meme is open to all.

Welcome to Folkmore's monthly Test Drive Meme! Please feel free to test drive any and all characters regardless of your intent to apply or whether you have an invite or not.

All TDMs are game canon and work like "mini-events". For new players and characters, you can choose to have your TDM thread be your introduction thread upon acceptance or start fresh. Current players are also allowed to have in-game characters post to the TDM so long as they mark their top levels ‘Current Character.’

TDM threads can be used for spoon spending at any time by characters accepted into the game.

Playing and interacting with the TDMs will allow characters to immediately obtain a canon item from home, especially weapons or other things they may have had on their person when they were pulled from their worlds! There will always be a prompt that provides some sort of "reward" to characters who complete certain tasks.

Current players are always encouraged to tag new people on the TDM!

🦊 New Star Children meet the Fox still in their worlds, and she brings them into the new realm of Folkmore. As you follow her, your body begins to change and new characteristics emerge. These may stay for a while, or perhaps they will hide away after. And during all of this, the Fox explains to you where you will be going: to Folkmore.

and then... you fall like a shooting star, falling to the land in a burst of starlight.

🦊 Experienced Star Children are already familiar with this time of the month. There are shooting stars all across the sky, and some fall to the land, which means the Fox has brought new arrivals. These newly arrived Star Children will face some tests, but Thirteen wants the more seasoned residents to participate as well.

Perhaps you follow the falling stars on your own, or perhaps the Fox simply teleports you there, but it appears you too will be part of this.

[ Prompt OnePrompt Two]

Scavengers Survive .
Content Warnings: Potential Wilderness Survival, Potential Death

New Star Children arrive in Amrita Academy, the largest school in Folkmore. They might arrive in the medical wing, or they could arrive in areas of the school that don't look like a school at all: forests with animals to hunt or gather, including for their medicinal properties; rocky crags with climbing routes; fields full of growing grains; meadows with sheep covered in soft wool; lakes and rivers with unusual denizens. It's like a miniature of Folkmore all in one school.

A fox with a clipped ear and a few scars greets each Star Child upon arrival. She explains that while things can be summoned with Lore, the best survivors learn to scavenge and to find what they need. New Star Children haven't earned much Lore yet, so that surely applies to them double. In fact, as befits a survival school, there are items that will help Star Children survive hidden all around and immediately outside the school. Star Children are directed to make a list on their Relic of everything they think they need to survive. Once made, the list cannot be changed. They will be more likely to find those items than others (though it will not be impossible).

Race, jog, or stroll around the expansive school in search of these items: clothes, bags, first aid kits, tents, survival supplies, etc. They might be harder to find than expected as they will be miniature and in little cubes aka survival squares (a misnomer). These cubes may be tucked away above, below, beside, or inside something. They also may float against a rock face or in the air among tree branches. The most likely locations are those densest in Lore. The longer Star Children explore, the more they will realize that these cubes are best and most easily obtained by working together. In fact, they will try to dodge and avoid the grip of a Star Child more than ten feet away from any other Star Child. Perhaps that's because two Star Children interacting are creating Lore and a Lore dense location? Once two Star Children touch the cube at the same time, the cube will disappear, and the item inside will grow to full size. Congratulations on being one step closer to survival. Remember to share.

Come mid-September, few cubes will remain inside the school. Star Children will have to check the perimeter of the school to find more survival squares. That task grows exponentially harder as the cubes are in the molasses-thick moat of concentrated Lore surrounding the school. Should anyone dip their spoon in the moat, in the Lorasses if you will, they will find that it tastes sweet, a rich spicy sweetness. Amazing! Less amazing? It is impossible to get past the moat of Lorasses. No matter how strong a swimmer or oarsman, it is impossible to make headway through or atop the Lorasses. Anyone attempting to fly across the moat will find themselves slapped by a giant sticky slappy hand rising like a goliath from the depths with perfect aim. Star Children can find themselves slapped anywhere from the shore to the center of the school. Star Children are free to get creative with ways to dig the survival squares out of the Lorasses, but beware! They'll have difficulty freeing themselves on their own from the sticky substance, should they fall in.

Since Star Children are likely to find themselves in sticky situations quite literally, they may be pleased to know that Amrita Academy has showers available for use. Unfortunately, due to one student's experiment, the shampoo is all made of beer. That's right, beer. It's good for one's hair! Or so the study should demonstrate. Be sure to fill out a feedback card outside the locker rooms.

  • All new Star Children arrive in Amrita Academy.
  • Star Children are greeted by a fox who prompts them to write a list of what they need to survive. These lists cannot be changed once made.
  • Star Children search for tiny cubes with survival supplies, especially ones on their lists.
  • Star Children must work together to catch & open the cubes.
  • Come mid-September, Amrita Academy is surrounded by a Lore-rich molasses moat—Lorasses. Thou shalt not pass.
  • Once the moat arrives, most cubes are in the moat. Shower to get clean afterward with beer for shampoo.
This is Our Get Along Shirt .
Content Warnings: Forced Close Contact, Coerced Behavior

It can be stressful to arrive in a new place among strangers and strange things. It can be even more stressful, sometimes, to be among people one knows. The fact remains that in Folkmore, no one is an island. The Shattered Spoon Shrine is a testament to that. Interact or perish. Those interactions usually don't even have to be positive. An emotionally charged argument generates Lore same as a touching reunion. However, Amrita's iteration has taken charge of Folkmore this month. She values cooperation and connection.

What does this mean for Star Children? It's time to get along.

When Star Children fight—physically, vocally, emotionally—they get stuck together in a magical t-shirt. This plain white t-shirt has 'This is our get along shirt' written on it on both sides, one in each Star Child's handwriting. (If a Star Child does not have handwriting, Thirteen will invent a handwriting she feels best represents them). The shirt works exactly as written on the tin. Until the two Star Children can get along, they will be stuck together in the shirt. Getting along can look a few different ways. It could be working through the reason they were fighting. It could be cooperating to accomplish something else. It could be helping someone else together. It could be large or small. Somehow, Star Children will have to get along to accomplish something.

The shirt will disappear, leaving them standing next to each other, only to reappear duplicated in each of their hands, perfectly sized to fit each individual. Should they so choose, either can be used for a repeat performance, with both of them trapped inside again. While the same condition will apply—they must get along to get out of the shirt—the shirt will now make it easier for them to work it out. Note: only the two people who originally wore the shirt can put it back on. No one else can wear these shirts.

One time only, a Star Child's cooperative escape will have an additional prize: their souvenir t-shirt will be wrapped around an item from either their home universe or their partner's. That's right, getting along can get a Star Child something from another universe.

  • When Star Children get in a fight of any kind, not just physical, they get stuck together in a magical t-shirt.
  • The shirt says “This is our get along shirt” front and back in characters’ own handwriting (or imagined handwriting).
  • As written on the tin, Star Children are stuck until they figure out how to get along
  • When they separate, both partners will get a copy of the t-shirt that fits them. They can choose to get back into said t-shirt together to figure out how to get along easier in the future.
  • One time only, Star Children receive an item from their home universe or their partner’s.

"So they're all born with an ability?" That's definitely different.

"We have people born with power at home but it's much more rare. Some are tied to specific families, though."

He definitely doesn't remember his previous time in Folkmore then. Technically the flood interrupted summer camp, but it also led to the first time Gideon learned to fly. This guy, another version of him, was the one who helped her do that. Who helped anyone who wanted it do that.

She snorts. "I'm a fan of the fact you taught me how to fly."

As a demonstration, Gideon extends her skeletal wings. They're huge, proportional to her size, though they lack any feathers whatsoever. They don't look like they should fly. It's some necro Ninth House vibe shit, but Gideon likes it. Very her.

With a big whoosh, she flies up into the air and searches for a thermal to float there. "Flying's great!" Gideon shouts down.

"The vast majority. Being quirkless is rare." Hawks considers his words thoughtfully.

"Of course genetics plays a part, most people get their quirk from their parents, or it's tied to them in some way."

"Oh, I see." That sounds like something he would do, after all he took Tsukuyomi out for a flight.

He laughs at her words though, strong wings flapping to put him airborn like he's meant to be in the air.

"Someone who appreciates the finer things." He compliments Gideon.

❥ Lorasses

Loki isn't sure what to expect when a fox comes to him and leads him to a new timeline. He presumes said timeline needs his help and needs to be course corrected somehow and while the fox tells him that he needs to reach his full potential, Loki is of the opinion that he's already done that. He controls time. He's managing the timelines on his own. What is it that he can achieve that he hasn't already? The fox assures him that nothing will happen to the timelines if he chooses to come with her so he does.

It's possibly the strangest thing he's ever done and that includes turning himself into Yggdrasil to maintain millions of timelines to keep them from being pruned spontaneously. He'd thought nothing could surprise him any longer but this has. Good for you, Fox, he thinks.

He's instructed to make a list of things he needs but Loki has always conjured things he needs so the list has one thing: a set of daggers. The cubes containing what he needs are stuck in a thick, sticky moat and it's only after he's waded into it that he realizes it's molasses. It's also not affected by his magic. When he sees someone on the shore, as it were, he calls out to them.

"Could you possibly help me out of this? My magic isn't doing what it should."

❥ This Is Our Get Along Shirt

He's stuck, again, but this time it isn't molasses. It's a shirt. Loki has never been defeated by a shirt before and he has no idea why this one has been shoved over the head of himself and someone else. They'd argued over one of the little cubes earlier, certainly, but it hadn't been such a quarrel that would warrant a punishment. Not to this extent anyway.

The person isn't even his height, which makes it worse, and he tries to rip it with his hands and he fails. His own elegant script mocks him along the front of it reminding him that this is his "get along shirt" and he has no idea how his handwriting got on this shirt because he certainly hadn't written anything. Not a singular thing. The magic here is annoying because it works against him at every turn.

"Try to rip it simultaneously," he says, voice strained in irritation. "It has to come off somehow."

"Day to day work, you must be really out of the loop, Mr. Number Two hero now All Might's retired," Katsuki rolls his eyes unimpressed. No, he has no idea what Hawks was really doing. He knows Hawks gets involved in the League of Villains fight during the big operation. He was there at ground zero, killing that crazy villain Twice. Dabi made sure everyone knew that. Saw that.

"Nothing's day to day anymore, not since the operation to take down the League of Villains and their allied lackies went to shit," Katsuki explains. Ish. It's sort of an explanation. "Shigaraki and most of his top lieutenants got away. Most of Japans sheltering at hero academies. It's chaos and anarchy in the streets."

So much for the biggest operation in the history of Japan's heroes. No, it'd be their operation, their smaller operation, that's remembered as incredible. Isolating everyone. Making it a fight on their terms. Not that everything went to plan. Nothing ever does.

Gideon's decent at flying after two years and a variety of ways to get airborn (it feels different to fly as a dragon), but Hawks continues to make it look as natural as breathing. It probably is that natural for him. Which, good for him. Gideon's that good with a sword, but much of the time Folkmore doesn't call for a sword. Many a sword-free situation or best sword-free. Sword-optional.

"Absolutely. If you don't appreciate what you got in life, what're you doing?" Gideon asks. She swoops and comes back up. "I'd only ever had one really good meal in my life before I came here. No joke. No hyperbole. Had some halfway decent ones once I was eighteen, but really good? Just the one, and it was followed up by murder."

Unarmed. Wanda doesn't let her guard down. She keeps her eyes trained on him.

"A dwarf? Then go back to minding your own business."

For some reason, anger bubbles within her. Perhaps her grief had become anger once more. A quick glance around assures her that it isn't a hex like West View was.

"This is Folkmore?"

She stepped forward cautiously. There's no way. There's absolutely no way that Ultron was standing there before her. Vision destroyed him. But the vibranium, sentient creature that she worked with once stood before her. Her lips curled into a snarl when he spoke her name.

"You have no right to speak to me."

She's no longer the lost girl that wanted revenge on Tony Stark.

"You have no right to call me that name."

The voice is far from warm and friendly and Merlin nearly jumps out of his skin when he hears it.

"Yes." He clears his throat and straightens his jacket. "Yes, I am. Are you new here as well?"

The other seems...well, at least they speak the same language. That is a relief. He leans forward and tries to speak below the din.

"How long have you been here?"

He doesn't think much when she lets go of his hand - no real hurt or anything there, he tucks his own hands into his pockets while they walk. Everything is going to be fine, this is just normal girl Michelle. Easy to get mixed up with so few clues.

"I know how this is gonna sound, but don't worry about it. They've never heard of the US Mint or anything like that around here? You get stuff called Lore from talking to people and you use that." He takes a breath to let her kind of take that in. She seems to need things in small doses.

Hawks has always preferred being in the air, he gets antsy when he stays grounded too long, he can feel it in his wings. He has the talents he was designed to have, although whether or not they would be useful in Folkmore would remain to be seen.

"That's really unfortunate. Have you ever tried fried chicken?" He asks easily, almost flapping his wings lazily to keep himself airborne. "Someone really smart put really good seasoning and breading and then fried chicken."

Hawks smiles a little bit, should he be insulted? It's not even like he wants to be number two. Somewhere down near twenty would be nice, but that's now how things have shaken out. "You know what it's like, piles of paperwork." While that is true, that's not what he's been doing.

His expression changes a little bit. Gone to shit huh? Damn it. Commission couldn't be too pleased about that.

"Sounds like a pain. That's definitely not what was going on for me." Something to look forward to, he's sure.

She absolutely needs to be alone, and the fact that Peter's actually fighting her on that makes a surge of panic swell. If he tries to argue, if he doesn't just let her leave cleanly and quietly, this is going to turn into a fight, and she's not in the right headspace to fight. She needs to lock herself somewhere private and cry first, wring all the emotion out of herself before she can put herself in a vulnerable position in front of anyone else.

"Well, I want to be alone," she blurts out, a sense of finality in her voice. "It's easier. It always has been." It occurs to her that this is the first lie she's ever told Peter, other than her claiming that she'd only been interested in him because she'd suspected he was Spider-Man. But just like last time, she needs to hide the truth of what she's feeling, and if that means she needs to lie to him, she'll do what she has to in order to get away before any more tears manage to escape.

"I've got to go." Where it is she's got to go, she has no idea. Is there a place she can stay nearby, or is she expected to sleep in the woods with all the other new arrivals? She's not sure, but she just needs to keep moving, because if she thinks too hard about everything that's just happened to her, she might never be able to move again.

"Bye, Peter."

"... what?"

If anything, she'd almost expected the local currency to be gold or pieces of silver, or something else straightforward and archaic. The idea of currency being something you can get just from talking to someone....

"So-... what is the Lore for, then? If it's a commodity-...." The idea that she should have a spoon, of all things, on her doesn't quite compute, and she can only shake her head, deciding that this is all something she might understand a bit more clearly once she has something in her stomach and gets at least a few hours of sleep.

"I barely have a grasp on the economics of my own world, never mind trying to figure out how commerce works in a place filled with more magic than the Sanctum Sanctorum."

[ Dick shrugs one shoulder. He doesn't have nearly as many answers as he wishes he had, and he completely understands her inclination to grill him for whatever he does have, both because she's wary of him and because she's lost here too. And it's not like they've got a lot of other things to do here anyway, aside from focus on the survival element. ]

A couple of hours or so? It's mostly just someplace to get out of the rain, in case that happens. I don't know how long she plans to leave us out here, but we'll be okay.

[ He puffs out a breath of a sigh at the rhetorical question though, not annoyed just— concerned, maybe. An inexpertly wielded sword is less likely to kill someone by accident than most more modern weaponry, but still, it's easy to imagine someone losing a finger or two, let alone who might get slashed in a moment of panic. On the other hand she would need some way to defend herself if things get bad. Or if someone out here doesn't care to play by the rules.

He's just seen too many things go wrong with deadly weapons, even the more mundane ones. ]

A Star Child landing is a rare sight. It's one of those things that happens very often, but in a literal flash, so it's easily missed. Today, Marc's lucky enough to catch the glow from the corner of his eye as he's out for a walk, and he speeds towards the source. He's been here long enough that he isn't surprised, nor even impressed. At most, he's frustrated with the fox for dumping someone so gracelessly.

"Hey, are you alright?" he calls out to her. He's keeping something of a distance for now, because he knows the situation can be disorienting and he doesn't want to frighten her.

Marc figured out real fast not to go near the molasses moat. He touched it once with a single finger and since then, he hasn't bothered. Still, as he wanders along the shore to investigate whether there's anything worthwhile around it, his attention's caught by a familiar face. ... A familiar face in the molasses.

Marc's lips press into a thin line as he fights off a smirk. The corners of his mouth still manage to quirk upwards, though. Oops.

"You uh... You get a little stuck there?" he calls back.

Rose Da Silva | Silent Hill (deercountry crau) | Legend

[personal profile] rosae 2024-09-03 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)

ARRIVAL
( The last thing Rose remembers is the smell of the ocean, and a deep, pressing ache in her chest. She was returning home to her most precious person, and yet — leaving another version of that most precious person behind as she started to step back into the waves. It was her time to go, but her heart couldn't feel at true peace, split in two.

When she wakes this time, it's with the soft, fluttering knowledge that she has returned to her daughter back home — Sharon, nine years old, smiling bright and white (maybe a little too sharp, a little too strange, something had changed about her, but Rose didn't care, she had her back). Even if neither of them could ever truly be home again, even if that perpetual white haze hung around them. She had all she needed. She was happy.

Rose slowly sits up from a hospital bed, thinking for a moment that she'd seen the soft glow of feathery white over her shoulder. The wings have vanished for now, but she knows something's changed, yet again, in her. Folkmore, the word whispers in her mind.

She knows this self is without her daughter once more, an understanding that stabs her through the chest. Rose gives a soft exhale as she looks around the room, and alarm quickly joins her sorrow, not quite replacing it, but demanding her immediate attention. She's clearly in some sort of medical facility, and memories of the horrors of Brookhaven Hospital flash in her mind. Could she be.. back there? Back in Silent Hill? That doesn't match what the Fox told her, and somewhere deep down Rose knows it isn't right, but she can't help hanging onto the notion as she slips from the bed, keeping her footsteps light.

If you happen to also be in the medical wing, she'll quickly become alerted to the presence of another person and immediately freeze, wide-eyed as she tenses back — but she seems more resolved than truly afraid, and her voice doesn't tremble when she speaks, eyes hard and locked on to her new companion. She won't trust anyone until she knows she can.
)

Who are you?

( Later, after Rose leaves the area, it becomes apparent that it's not an entire hospital. It's something else — some kind of school? University? It's huge, and she's having a hard time navigating her way. This time, there are no children's drawings to guide her, no flash against the peripheral of her vision of a little girl darting away for her to follow. This is surreal, but she's certainly no stranger to surreal things by now, and though she's wary of any stranger, she will begin to approach others in the school. )

Excuse me. What can you tell me about this place...?

SURVIVAL
( Once instructions are given to her regarding the little scavenger hunt, Rose sets out to track down the items she'd listed on her Relic, but she hadn't spent much time considering them, typing them in quickly. Food, water, a blanket. First aid. Her coat. A weapon. She's really only concerned with finding one thing. She knows another version of her daughter exists out there in the universe, and though maybe there's a slim chance that she would end up with her again, Rose will never give up looking for her. Never. She'll search this entire place to make sure, however long it takes.

But even she can't keep going without some of those aforementioned items on her list. Soon enough, she's feeling the pang of hunger, the unpleasant dryness at the back of her throat, yearning for something to drink. As she searches for her daughter, she's simultaneously searching for these things that were alluded to, and makes her way into the forest area of the strange school. She steps carefully, knee-high boots light against the forest floor, placing her hand against tree trunks as she pushes her way through.

When she eventually comes across one of those miniature cubes, she halts, tilting her head up as she stares at the thing, hovering between two tree branches. It's high enough that she has to stand on tiptoes to grasp for the item, but as soon as her fingertips come close.... it evades her as though it has a mind of its own, darting away to rest on another branch. Rose startles, brows raised — and tries again, only for the incident to repeat. Frustrated, she gives a huff and takes a step back, then crouches to the ground to scoop up a few small loose stones. Maybe she has to hit the thing....? Feeling ridiculous, like she's playing some carnival game, she starts tossing them at the cube — but nothing happens, only the soft thuds of stones bouncing off and hitting the ground.
)

Come on....!

( Even Silent Hill, a hellscape full of twisted puzzles, lacked anything like this..... )

NETWORK
( The device is... strange, but Rose figures out how to work it soon enough, thanks to the tutorial that pops up when she turns the thing on. )

Is anyone here familiar with a place called Silent Hill?

feel free to wildcard exploring / survival shenanigans, as rose will be all over the place. will match format!

Katsuki is pretty sure many heroes have their sidekicks fill out the paperwork. All Might worked a lot of the time without even a single sidekick, so he must have done the paperwork itself. If All Might can do it, why not this guy? Why not him? He won't get caught up in it, but he does all his homework and aces his tests. As much of a flutter as Hawks made at the hero ranking event, he's sure being boring and dull now. Is Katsuki not enough of an audience for him? It isn't even a dumb nerd way of boring.

"For some reason, Deku chose you as one of the few heroes he can trust, so it will become your business. The final plan's All Might's, and it placed you and Endeavor against All For One, the older big bad. You two hit him fairly hard, from what I heard, but he had a countermeasure. So I finished the job after he stole your quirk and escaped to find Shigaraki."

No more complaints he isn't sharing what needs to be shared.
