August-September 2024 Test Drive Meme
August-September 2024 TDM
Introduction
Welcome to Folkmore's monthly Test Drive Meme! Please feel free to test drive any and all characters regardless of your intent to apply or whether you have an invite or not.
All TDMs are game canon and work like "mini-events". For new players and characters, you can choose to have your TDM thread be your introduction thread upon acceptance or start fresh. Current players are also allowed to have in-game characters post to the TDM so long as they mark their top levels ‘Current Character.’
TDM threads can be used for spoon spending at any time by characters accepted into the game.
Playing and interacting with the TDMs will allow characters to immediately obtain a canon item from home, especially weapons or other things they may have had on their person when they were pulled from their worlds! There will always be a prompt that provides some sort of "reward" to characters who complete certain tasks.
🦊 New Star Children meet the Fox still in their worlds, and she brings them into the new realm of Folkmore. As you follow her, your body begins to change and new characteristics emerge. These may stay for a while, or perhaps they will hide away after. And during all of this, the Fox explains to you where you will be going: to Folkmore.
and then... you fall like a shooting star, falling to the land in a burst of starlight.
🦊 Experienced Star Children are already familiar with this time of the month. There are shooting stars all across the sky, and some fall to the land, which means the Fox has brought new arrivals. These newly arrived Star Children will face some tests, but Thirteen wants the more seasoned residents to participate as well.
Perhaps you follow the falling stars on your own, or perhaps the Fox simply teleports you there, but it appears you too will be part of this.
Content Warnings: Potential Wilderness Survival, Potential Death
New Star Children arrive in Amrita Academy, the largest school in Folkmore. They might arrive in the medical wing, or they could arrive in areas of the school that don't look like a school at all: forests with animals to hunt or gather, including for their medicinal properties; rocky crags with climbing routes; fields full of growing grains; meadows with sheep covered in soft wool; lakes and rivers with unusual denizens. It's like a miniature of Folkmore all in one school.
A fox with a clipped ear and a few scars greets each Star Child upon arrival. She explains that while things can be summoned with Lore, the best survivors learn to scavenge and to find what they need. New Star Children haven't earned much Lore yet, so that surely applies to them double. In fact, as befits a survival school, there are items that will help Star Children survive hidden all around and immediately outside the school. Star Children are directed to make a list on their Relic of everything they think they need to survive. Once made, the list cannot be changed. They will be more likely to find those items than others (though it will not be impossible).
Race, jog, or stroll around the expansive school in search of these items: clothes, bags, first aid kits, tents, survival supplies, etc. They might be harder to find than expected as they will be miniature and in little cubes aka survival squares (a misnomer). These cubes may be tucked away above, below, beside, or inside something. They also may float against a rock face or in the air among tree branches. The most likely locations are those densest in Lore. The longer Star Children explore, the more they will realize that these cubes are best and most easily obtained by working together. In fact, they will try to dodge and avoid the grip of a Star Child more than ten feet away from any other Star Child. Perhaps that's because two Star Children interacting are creating Lore and a Lore dense location? Once two Star Children touch the cube at the same time, the cube will disappear, and the item inside will grow to full size. Congratulations on being one step closer to survival. Remember to share.
Come mid-September, few cubes will remain inside the school. Star Children will have to check the perimeter of the school to find more survival squares. That task grows exponentially harder as the cubes are in the molasses-thick moat of concentrated Lore surrounding the school. Should anyone dip their spoon in the moat, in the Lorasses if you will, they will find that it tastes sweet, a rich spicy sweetness. Amazing! Less amazing? It is impossible to get past the moat of Lorasses. No matter how strong a swimmer or oarsman, it is impossible to make headway through or atop the Lorasses. Anyone attempting to fly across the moat will find themselves slapped by a giant sticky slappy hand rising like a goliath from the depths with perfect aim. Star Children can find themselves slapped anywhere from the shore to the center of the school. Star Children are free to get creative with ways to dig the survival squares out of the Lorasses, but beware! They'll have difficulty freeing themselves on their own from the sticky substance, should they fall in.
Since Star Children are likely to find themselves in sticky situations quite literally, they may be pleased to know that Amrita Academy has showers available for use. Unfortunately, due to one student's experiment, the shampoo is all made of beer. That's right, beer. It's good for one's hair! Or so the study should demonstrate. Be sure to fill out a feedback card outside the locker rooms.

- All new Star Children arrive in Amrita Academy.
- Star Children are greeted by a fox who prompts them to write a list of what they need to survive. These lists cannot be changed once made.
- Star Children search for tiny cubes with survival supplies, especially ones on their lists.
- Star Children must work together to catch & open the cubes.
- Come mid-September, Amrita Academy is surrounded by a Lore-rich molasses moat—Lorasses. Thou shalt not pass.
- Once the moat arrives, most cubes are in the moat. Shower to get clean afterward with beer for shampoo.
Content Warnings: Forced Close Contact, Coerced Behavior
It can be stressful to arrive in a new place among strangers and strange things. It can be even more stressful, sometimes, to be among people one knows. The fact remains that in Folkmore, no one is an island. The Shattered Spoon Shrine is a testament to that. Interact or perish. Those interactions usually don't even have to be positive. An emotionally charged argument generates Lore same as a touching reunion. However, Amrita's iteration has taken charge of Folkmore this month. She values cooperation and connection.
What does this mean for Star Children? It's time to get along.
When Star Children fight—physically, vocally, emotionally—they get stuck together in a magical t-shirt. This plain white t-shirt has 'This is our get along shirt' written on it on both sides, one in each Star Child's handwriting. (If a Star Child does not have handwriting, Thirteen will invent a handwriting she feels best represents them). The shirt works exactly as written on the tin. Until the two Star Children can get along, they will be stuck together in the shirt. Getting along can look a few different ways. It could be working through the reason they were fighting. It could be cooperating to accomplish something else. It could be helping someone else together. It could be large or small. Somehow, Star Children will have to get along to accomplish something.
The shirt will disappear, leaving them standing next to each other, only to reappear duplicated in each of their hands, perfectly sized to fit each individual. Should they so choose, either can be used for a repeat performance, with both of them trapped inside again. While the same condition will apply—they must get along to get out of the shirt—the shirt will now make it easier for them to work it out. Note: only the two people who originally wore the shirt can put it back on. No one else can wear these shirts.
One time only, a Star Child's cooperative escape will have an additional prize: their souvenir t-shirt will be wrapped around an item from either their home universe or their partner's. That's right, getting along can get a Star Child something from another universe.

- When they separate, both partners will get a copy of the t-shirt that fits them. They can choose to get back into said t-shirt together to figure out how to get along easier in the future.

Anne Shirley Cuthbert | Anne with an E | Legend
Even though Anne had reached the great and mature age of seventeen, she'd shared a few kisses with Gilbert that made her cheeks burn with delight, she hadn't given up her love for the fanciful.
She knew that she had to focus, she was going to be going to college soon as a proper young lady, even though she'd still scale trees and wander through the woods whenever the chances presented themselves.
As a result, when Anne encountered a talking fox, she was overjoyed, trying to pepper the fox with questions. Much to her disappointment, the fox was clear on one thing and one thing only: go with her and reach her full potential.
That was a lure that Anne Shirley couldn't possibly resist. Potential was nice, but the notion of an entire land filled with talking foxes was what enchanted her. And turning into a falling star--a falling star!!--was a source of delight.
If only the landing had been nicer. She'd landed right on her rump which was rather painful and a bit humiliating. Anne sat for a moment, trying to focus on the feeling of briefly being a star and not on what had to become a rather painful bruise on her bottom.
Getting to her feet wasn't quite so easy as she'd anticipated either now that she had a pair of size-appropriate dragonfly wings on her back. The fear of bruising was completely eclipsed by the glee of discovering her new wings and she turned to the closest person standing to her.
"Isn't the most exciting thing to ever happen? I'm going to miss Matthew and Marilla and Diana and--and Gilbert terribly much, but this is another world! And I have wings! Do you have wings, may I see them? Oh, I can't wait to truly explore and see all that can be seen!"
This is Our Get Along Shirt
Anne knew that she had the tendency to talk perhaps more than she should. She was terribly careless in the kitchen. She daydreamed in school more than she should. And maybe, maybe others could be annoyed by her desire to fix every problem in her path.
But what she'd done to deserve this, she'd had no idea.
She was trapped in an overlarge men's shirt emblazoned with the foolish slogan 'This is our Get Along Shirt' with someone who hadn't taken her romantic musings over their new home well.
Anne felt it was terribly unfair. For so many years, the only beauty and romance to be found were in her imagination. It was only after coming to Green Gables that she found a home, a place to belong, people to belong with.
She was entirely certain she'd find such people here as well, but this person wasn't one of them.
She gave them a thoroughly cross look and asserted "I don't see how this is my fault or why I should be punished because of what you did. All I did was try to strike up a friendly conversation, so this is your fault! We must get out of this thing as soon as we can for you're not improving on greater exposure!"
Anne attempted to cross her arms within the shirt and failed, irking her further.
Arrival
Yes, I have wings, although not from here. I had them back home.
[He shows the three dark blue wings he bears. Beautiful and feathery, like angels' wings or birds' wings, with strange, claw-like bones on top.]
no subject
"I've never seen wings like yours before, not even in the Biblical illustrations I've seen! Blue is such a lovely color, everyone looks good in blue, but if I may do those claws hurt? They look like they might, it's unfair of Thirteen to not heal them for you, shouldn't she do that as a normal thing? Make sure we're all healthy and happy while we explore what it means to reach our potentials? Did she tell you what yours was, she neglected to go into details about mine."
no subject
"No, they don't hurt. They've always been part of the wings' structure."
He doesn't know why, either; that's just how it is.
"I'm quite healthy. But no, she didn't explain anything to me either. I suppose she expects us to find out for ourselves."
Like a military leader would.
sorry for the delay, impulsively went to a con this weekend!
"Really? I've never heard of such a thing and even in my wildest imaginations I'm sure I couldn't come up with them. Unless it was for a gothic story with a tormented Byronic hero whose heart had to be melted by a plucky yet determined heroine. I think that would make for a very good story.
That's troublesome, not being told what we have to do to find out. Wouldn't be easier to simply tell us so that we know what our goal should be?"
Oh fun!
He smirks a bit. "Easier, perhaps, but the Fox probably feels that it's more valuable for us to work for the answers instead of having them handed to us. We may learn more this way."
It was! I still can't believe I got to meet MARK HAMILL. ❤️
Granted, finally being 'official' with Gilbert made her rethink flirting, but she'd never flirted with him and he seemed, well, positively enraptured by her! It was all rather thrilling.
And Anne nodded, looking thoughtful. "You're likely right. I can't imagine achieving one's potential is an easy task, even if we were pointed in the right direction. Besides, what one may consider a pleasing fate may be anything but pleasing for someone else!" She brightened again. "It will be like solving a puzzle or a mystery! Don't you think it might be more like that?"
So epic, squeee! I would love to meet him, and Sam Riegel, and George Newbern!
"I imagine they're enjoyable fare for those who like those kinds of stories," he says at last. He would probably find them a waste of time to read ... or maybe they would just make him think too much about the past. For all his talk of Cloud being bound to the past, there's one thing that still binds him to it, as well. And there is only one outcome that could ever set him free.
A smirk. "And I fully agree a story must have more 'meat' than flirting."
He nods to this insight. "I believe it will be exactly like that."
It was an experience I'll never forget, he's amazing and so funny!
"Ruby certainly enjoyed writing them. I don't know if I always like a happy ending, though, sometimes a tragedy can be beautiful as well. Like 'Romeo and Juliet,' Marilla didn't think I should read it, but it's Shakespeare and he's one of the greatest writers of all time. I can only dream of writing something which would last as long and still be beloved." She was going to try, though. She wanted to be able to leave her mark on the world so that she'd never be forgotten.
"Yes! I agree wholeheartedly! Drama, mystery, intrigue, all of those elements are needed to season a story and make it exciting to read. I plan to study literature and writing here since Kuma Lisa is apparently a very good school!" That way, she wouldn't be behind everyone else at Queens, in case she was here a very long time.
"I feel a great deal more reassured now. Before, I was rather unsettled by the notion of going into the process without more details, but if the details are ours to be found along the way, that makes it a very natural process." She beamed and asked "If you could achieve your greatest dream come true, what would it be?"
That sounds so amazing! I love when celebrities are like that!
"You'll be a very enthusiastic student," he said. Like Zack....
"I agree." And he paused. His greatest dream had little to do with achieving some true potential and everything to do with finding Zack alive and well, no matter how impossible that seemed. But he didn't want to speak of that, at least not the details.
"... I'm looking for someone," he said at last. "I want to find him."
he's really down to earth and at the same time an epic troll. it's awesome!
"I'm sure I will be. I was getting ready to go to Queens College when the fox approached me. I must say it was quite a shock! I thought I'd already achieved my potential because I found out what happened to my parents, I was on the very verge of college, and Gilbert and I--I suppose I should say that we had a meeting of the minds, soul deep."
They'd been separated for so long, first enemies then rivals then friends. And then more. Each yearning for the other but due to a series of misunderstandings and wounded pride kept them apart.
"I can help you look! I'm very good at finding things, I want to help if I can," Anne offered eagerly.
OMG, Anne Shirley!
Rather hard to stick a landing when you couldn't even tell where your feet were.
The tuck-and-roll landing only just allowed her to NOT land on her ass. She sat there a few moments, trying to assess any damage (there wasn't any), before getting on her feet, brushing herself off, and only just noticing the giant, black wings on her back.
"Fuckin A..." She tried to reach out and touch one; the 'feathers' seemed to overlap and feel almost like linen-not real feathers at all.
Her observations are broken by some girl's chattering. Whatever this place was, it must be safe enough that talking outloud didn't run the risk of danger.
Though, it took a moment for Sonya to realize that the girl was talking to her-and even a moment longer to process her questions. "One, being a shooting star wasn't exactly on the agenda, two; I know of a Matt, but judging by the other names I've a feeling it's not the same guy, and three...I apparently do, and since you asked permission, suppose you could."
As for exploration...aggravating as it was to be pulled without consent, this place did look interesting enough to make up for it.
Hi! Hi! Hi!
In any case, stars were beautiful, she had been beautiful, but now she was herself again with her freckled face and red hair bound into two long braids. She was also a little cold and a lot embarrassed as the fox had come to her at night. The nightgown covered everything, but it was of a flimsy material since it had been spring when she left Prince Edward Island and she earnestly wondered how long she'd have to talk to someone to get enough...spoons? strange...to buy a dress. Maybe living here, all of her dresses could have puffed sleeves and ribbons and lace, that was too wonderful to contemplate for long.
And Anne had been known to be able to talk the ear off of a mule and wasn't aware of any reasons to be fearful, so why not talk? Even if it was merely to hear herself do so and reassure herself that she'd made the right choice. Which she had. She was going to miss everyone so much, but since the fox had come to her, she saw no reason why it shouldn't go to, say, Diana and Gilbert. Both had their reasons to want to meet their full potential, after all.
So she gazed up at Sonya with an open expression on her face. This woman had more muscles than she'd evere seen on any woman before, it was rather fascinating.
Anne nodded along seriously. "I suppose being a star was a bit surprising, but wasn't it thrilling? I never imagined it was possible, though I also thought talking animals couldn't be possible either and I was wrong about that, too." And quite dignified, "Thank you. You may mine, too, if you like." And she circled around to the woman's back, gasping in amazement. "Oh, they're beautiful! Such a lovely raven black and they're so soft! Mine are--I'm not sure what they are, but when I reached back to touch them, they felt terribly flimsy, especially when compared to yours. Can you tell me what I have? Not moth wings I hope, moths are terrible and they eat holes in clothing all the time." Somehow, she managed to say all of that in a single breath.
sorry for the late tag! Hadn't been feeling well.
"Don't worry, they're dragonfly wings not moth ones." She looked over her own shoulder, tensing her shoulder blades, feeling the wings stretch forward just slightly, before retracting.
She did notice that the girl was only in a nightgown, and if the medical equipment was anything to go by-would certainly explain the chill. Her own shirt was short sleeved, but after the muggy Indiana heat, this was a welcome respite.
Her eye landed on a metal closet. "Any luck, they'll have some lab coats inside. Hopefully you can wear it over your wings."
Perhaps not warm exactly, but it would be better than nothing.
no worries, I went to a con, saw Mark Hamill and brought Covid as a souvenir
"Oh, that's such a relief! Dragonflies are beautiful and they're almost as good as a butterfly. Do you think they could carry my weight? It seems like a terrible shame to have wings but be unable to fly. Do you think your wings will let you fly? They seem so much more sturdy than mine."
And Anne was. She was a little chilly, but it was nothing like she'd experienced at the orphanage or the families she was sent to serve. Then, she was used to being cold, even during the warmest summer because she wanted to be somewhere, anywhere but there.
She couldn't help being curious. "What's a lab coat? And a lab? I've never heard those words before, or at least not combined in one garment."
Anything would be better than nothing. She felt quite overexposed in her nightgown.
but...how often do you get the chance to meet Mark Hamill?
The cabinet did indeed hold a few lab coats. She could tell they'd been there awhile as well-while clean, she could see evidence of chemical burns. They'd have to do all the same.
She took one, though the girl's questions caught her a little by surprise. The girl looked like she might be high school age, and even kids who didn't take lab in school would've likely known what they were.
"Lab is short for laboratory, where you work and test various experiments." She might as well answer. "A lab coat's what you wear to protect yourself should an accident happen and you don't accidently burn your skin from a chemical spill or rogue flame."
Sonya tossed her the coat. "See if this fits."
well, I am going to Star Wars Celebration Japan next year? /bashful
She looked around herself curiously, she could already tell this was going to be leagues different from dear Avonlea, but this was the bargain she'd made and she wasn't going to complain. At least not where anyone could hear her, confessing things to a mirror in solitude always seemed to help back home, it would have to do here as well, at least until she met kindred spirits.
And Anne was entirely old enough for Queens College, thank you.
"Oh! Like Miss Stacy, the potatoes, and the light bulbs! But what on earth would cause those things to happen to an ordinary student?" She frowned slightly. "Gilbert may have to contend with such things as he's studying to be a doctor, but my path is literature and writing. I doubt I'd encounter such things with my course of study."
Anne caught it reflexively and shrugged it on. She wasn't a tall girl, so it went to her calves and the sleeves were too long. The sleeves she could cuff, but there was nothing to do about the length unless she had the time to hem it which she likely didn't.
Nice!
They were in a medical lab, which meant records, and records meant intel-meant information on where exactly they were.
Sonya near ran towards the closest file cabinet-the most important files would've been on top. They'd have to have rough data and hard copies; she really didn't feel like dealing with computer passwords.
The upper part of her arm, just below her shoulder, bore what looked like a large birthmark, in the shape of a serpent circled by its own tail.
She paused from her searching, looking over that same shoulder at Anne's remark. "Most schools have science courses as required classes. Besides, never know...Mary Shelley was a writer and her main character was a medical doctor who did experiments."
The last time she'd read Frankenstein was when she was as young as the girl, but she did remember that much of the novel.
no subject
Most of the equipment has no real meaning to Anne, other than the obvious things like stethoscopes. She picked up a blood pressure cuff, took the pump, and tried filling it with air while it wasn't attached to anything. It didn't do anything, which was disappointing, so she set it back down where she found it.
The woman's dash to what looked like a metal chest of drawers was somewhat alarming, so Anne followed at a slightly quicker pace than usual. "What do you think is in there? More clothes, maybe?"
She'd never seen a birthmark look like that. She thought of her own freckled face when she thought about unsightly things on the skin. The other woman's birthmark was rather pretty in Anne's estimation.
"We didn't until Miss Stacy started teaching us. Mr. Phillips, our old teacher, didn't think it was necessary to learn outside perhaps basic first aid. That was so men could bandage each other in farm work or women could take care of their families. Miss Stacy was curious about all kinds of materials and she passed that curiosity on to her students. I hope to learn all kinds of things at Queen's.
But if Marilla didn't approve of 'Ben Hur,' she'd never allow me to read 'Frankenstein.' She'd think it was too scandalous for a young lady to read even though a young lady wrote it. It does make me wonder how women are expected to learn without being able to do things along with reading about them," she said curiously. If she was going to write, she needed to understand what she was writing about.
Arrival
Her train of thought is interrupted when the stranger next to her suddenly starts talking to her. At her. Kind of a lot. Rin blinks, once, but then her brain catches up and she has a look at the girl. A newcomer, then -- her words make that clear enough. Poor girl; Rin remembers being new. It was a very confusing time.
So she lowers her hands to her sides and turns toward the girl, giving her a smile. "Ahhh, well, I used to have wings, but recently things changed." Immediately, it occurs to her that this probably explains nothing. "That happens here sometimes," she supplies, a bit awkwardly. Then she decides to wait for any questions the girl might have.
sorry for the delay, impulsively went to a con this weekend!
Granted, she's yet to hear about trials, only that here she can reach her full potential, an absolutely irresistible hook to snag an Anne Shirley with.
And Anne is positively thrilled, she can't wait to meet everyone and make new friends and hope that Gilbert and Diana follow quickly behind her.
"Used to have wings, but no longer? Oh, that's positively tragical! I think my heart would break if such a thing happened to me, I've always wanted wings like a bird, but wings like a dragonfly will do since they're so shiny. Though, I'm not sure if they'd carry my weight should I wish to fly, I know I'm a dreadfully skinny thing, but the wings seem so delicate! But...how did you lose your wings? Was it scary? Painful?"
no problem <3
Which means that Rin is happy to introduce newcomers to the world and answer questions if needed. She smiles at Anne. "It wasn't painful, thankfully! The way it happend... uhm, has the fox told you about the roles? I don't quite remember if that was part of the introductory talk."
aaaaaand I took Covid home as a souvenir!
And she smiled broadly back. "She did! Apparently I'm a legend, see?" And she turned around to show off a pair of to scale dragonfly wings. "I do love dragonflies, especially the blue ones, but I don't know if these wings could carry me. It would be utterly tragical if I had wings but was unable to fly. It would be something out of a Greek tragedy come to life!"
