August-September 2024 Test Drive Meme

August-September 2024 TDM
Introduction

[ TDM QuestionsJump to CommentsFull Navigation ]

This Test Drive meme is open to all.

Welcome to Folkmore's monthly Test Drive Meme! Please feel free to test drive any and all characters regardless of your intent to apply or whether you have an invite or not.

All TDMs are game canon and work like "mini-events". For new players and characters, you can choose to have your TDM thread be your introduction thread upon acceptance or start fresh. Current players are also allowed to have in-game characters post to the TDM so long as they mark their top levels ‘Current Character.’

TDM threads can be used for spoon spending at any time by characters accepted into the game.

Playing and interacting with the TDMs will allow characters to immediately obtain a canon item from home, especially weapons or other things they may have had on their person when they were pulled from their worlds! There will always be a prompt that provides some sort of "reward" to characters who complete certain tasks.

Current players are always encouraged to tag new people on the TDM!

🦊 New Star Children meet the Fox still in their worlds, and she brings them into the new realm of Folkmore. As you follow her, your body begins to change and new characteristics emerge. These may stay for a while, or perhaps they will hide away after. And during all of this, the Fox explains to you where you will be going: to Folkmore.

and then... you fall like a shooting star, falling to the land in a burst of starlight.

🦊 Experienced Star Children are already familiar with this time of the month. There are shooting stars all across the sky, and some fall to the land, which means the Fox has brought new arrivals. These newly arrived Star Children will face some tests, but Thirteen wants the more seasoned residents to participate as well.

Perhaps you follow the falling stars on your own, or perhaps the Fox simply teleports you there, but it appears you too will be part of this.

[ Prompt OnePrompt Two]

Scavengers Survive .
Content Warnings: Potential Wilderness Survival, Potential Death

New Star Children arrive in Amrita Academy, the largest school in Folkmore. They might arrive in the medical wing, or they could arrive in areas of the school that don't look like a school at all: forests with animals to hunt or gather, including for their medicinal properties; rocky crags with climbing routes; fields full of growing grains; meadows with sheep covered in soft wool; lakes and rivers with unusual denizens. It's like a miniature of Folkmore all in one school.

A fox with a clipped ear and a few scars greets each Star Child upon arrival. She explains that while things can be summoned with Lore, the best survivors learn to scavenge and to find what they need. New Star Children haven't earned much Lore yet, so that surely applies to them double. In fact, as befits a survival school, there are items that will help Star Children survive hidden all around and immediately outside the school. Star Children are directed to make a list on their Relic of everything they think they need to survive. Once made, the list cannot be changed. They will be more likely to find those items than others (though it will not be impossible).

Race, jog, or stroll around the expansive school in search of these items: clothes, bags, first aid kits, tents, survival supplies, etc. They might be harder to find than expected as they will be miniature and in little cubes aka survival squares (a misnomer). These cubes may be tucked away above, below, beside, or inside something. They also may float against a rock face or in the air among tree branches. The most likely locations are those densest in Lore. The longer Star Children explore, the more they will realize that these cubes are best and most easily obtained by working together. In fact, they will try to dodge and avoid the grip of a Star Child more than ten feet away from any other Star Child. Perhaps that's because two Star Children interacting are creating Lore and a Lore dense location? Once two Star Children touch the cube at the same time, the cube will disappear, and the item inside will grow to full size. Congratulations on being one step closer to survival. Remember to share.

Come mid-September, few cubes will remain inside the school. Star Children will have to check the perimeter of the school to find more survival squares. That task grows exponentially harder as the cubes are in the molasses-thick moat of concentrated Lore surrounding the school. Should anyone dip their spoon in the moat, in the Lorasses if you will, they will find that it tastes sweet, a rich spicy sweetness. Amazing! Less amazing? It is impossible to get past the moat of Lorasses. No matter how strong a swimmer or oarsman, it is impossible to make headway through or atop the Lorasses. Anyone attempting to fly across the moat will find themselves slapped by a giant sticky slappy hand rising like a goliath from the depths with perfect aim. Star Children can find themselves slapped anywhere from the shore to the center of the school. Star Children are free to get creative with ways to dig the survival squares out of the Lorasses, but beware! They'll have difficulty freeing themselves on their own from the sticky substance, should they fall in.

Since Star Children are likely to find themselves in sticky situations quite literally, they may be pleased to know that Amrita Academy has showers available for use. Unfortunately, due to one student's experiment, the shampoo is all made of beer. That's right, beer. It's good for one's hair! Or so the study should demonstrate. Be sure to fill out a feedback card outside the locker rooms.

  • All new Star Children arrive in Amrita Academy.
  • Star Children are greeted by a fox who prompts them to write a list of what they need to survive. These lists cannot be changed once made.
  • Star Children search for tiny cubes with survival supplies, especially ones on their lists.
  • Star Children must work together to catch & open the cubes.
  • Come mid-September, Amrita Academy is surrounded by a Lore-rich molasses moat—Lorasses. Thou shalt not pass.
  • Once the moat arrives, most cubes are in the moat. Shower to get clean afterward with beer for shampoo.
This is Our Get Along Shirt .
Content Warnings: Forced Close Contact, Coerced Behavior

It can be stressful to arrive in a new place among strangers and strange things. It can be even more stressful, sometimes, to be among people one knows. The fact remains that in Folkmore, no one is an island. The Shattered Spoon Shrine is a testament to that. Interact or perish. Those interactions usually don't even have to be positive. An emotionally charged argument generates Lore same as a touching reunion. However, Amrita's iteration has taken charge of Folkmore this month. She values cooperation and connection.

What does this mean for Star Children? It's time to get along.

When Star Children fight—physically, vocally, emotionally—they get stuck together in a magical t-shirt. This plain white t-shirt has 'This is our get along shirt' written on it on both sides, one in each Star Child's handwriting. (If a Star Child does not have handwriting, Thirteen will invent a handwriting she feels best represents them). The shirt works exactly as written on the tin. Until the two Star Children can get along, they will be stuck together in the shirt. Getting along can look a few different ways. It could be working through the reason they were fighting. It could be cooperating to accomplish something else. It could be helping someone else together. It could be large or small. Somehow, Star Children will have to get along to accomplish something.

The shirt will disappear, leaving them standing next to each other, only to reappear duplicated in each of their hands, perfectly sized to fit each individual. Should they so choose, either can be used for a repeat performance, with both of them trapped inside again. While the same condition will apply—they must get along to get out of the shirt—the shirt will now make it easier for them to work it out. Note: only the two people who originally wore the shirt can put it back on. No one else can wear these shirts.

One time only, a Star Child's cooperative escape will have an additional prize: their souvenir t-shirt will be wrapped around an item from either their home universe or their partner's. That's right, getting along can get a Star Child something from another universe.

  • When Star Children get in a fight of any kind, not just physical, they get stuck together in a magical t-shirt.
  • The shirt says “This is our get along shirt” front and back in characters’ own handwriting (or imagined handwriting).
  • As written on the tin, Star Children are stuck until they figure out how to get along
  • When they separate, both partners will get a copy of the t-shirt that fits them. They can choose to get back into said t-shirt together to figure out how to get along easier in the future.
  • One time only, Star Children receive an item from their home universe or their partner’s.

Arrival

He hadn't really thought it was real, not at first but the choice had been a moment of weakness, of being tired. And he'd followed the fox, hadn't noticed any actual changes in his body as they walked and when he landed? He was more confused than anything else. Nothing looked remotely familiar but finding himself in a forest is at least something he's dealt with before.

The fox addressing him has him pausing, listening and then eyeing the thing in his hand before he actually notices his hand and what's missing. "Anything I put on the list, I can have?" Because if it gets him Zidian back, it's worth whatever the price is.

List made, with Zidian at the top, he's hunting supplies. His list consists of a bow and arrows, a knife, Zidian. Food isn't an issue if it's a matter of just surviving, but he's definitely less than happy. At least this will distract him for a while. And maybe he'll figure out how to get Sandu back as well.

Wildcard

[I can write a specific scenario to anyone who wants a thread/prompt. Canon point is after The battle of Nightless City/first siege of the Burial mounds.]

Morgott | Elden Ring | ... Probably Familiar? Not sure 100%

[personal profile] veiledmonarch 2024-08-13 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I: The List

[ ... What he needs to survive? Were Morgott one for mirth, he might well have laughed at such a suggestion. After only a moment's hesitation after his arrival, he stands to his own impressive height and walks calmly with heavy footsteps to the front of the class. His relic has not been touched this whole time. He didn't make a list. Either way, unless someone stops him from doing this, the great mountain of a man is going to say to the fox, again with a calm voice, ]

Nary a thing shall be required for mine survival.

[ At least nothing which he can't just, you know, find himself. He's survived much worse than this forest looks to be. He's unsettled to be without the sword he had bled his blood into, but he doesn't even have his shackles on him. This is nothing as compared to his youth.

And with that said, unless someone tells him that's silly of him to make it harder on himself, he's just going to leave to try to leave the school. ]

II: The Survival

[ Of course... leaving the school is easier said that done. There's forests, crags, and generally just rough terrain he isn't familiar with to navigate. Still, for being an over ten foot tall ogre of a man with twisted horns and a scorpion tail, he's surprisingly quick and nimble. Morgott traverses the environment by way of making standing leaps almost thirty feet in the air, running at enormous speeds, and sometimes cutting through thick underbrush with daggers of light he generates in his palm. Honestly, he looks like he's doing just fine at the whole survival thing and thus is going to be ignoring the cubes for the most part.

This does mean he'll be hunting animals with said light daggers and he'll be sleeping on the ground without a tent when he doesn't make it out on the first day? But details. He's also collecting plant samples from around the place and putting them into a little pouch he's made out of ripping part of his cloak. You never know when such reagents will be useful? He doesn't have a Talisman Pouch anymore, after all. Nor all the forces once at his disposal at home.

Maybe your character needs help and needs to ask for support? Maybe you're just surprised by this guy's appearance? Who knows. ]

- - - - -

[ So I put him on the last tdm but I'm doing it again. Same disclaimers as last time vis a vie Shadow the Erdtree but I can now more confidently promise you there's nothing relevant there which'll come up from him. Feel free to OTA me, especially if it's something to set up the sharing the shirt thing because that's hilarious (and it's hard to put up a generic prompt for an argument) Another OTA-ish prompt I didn't write but is in the back of my mind is I'm not 100% on him being a Familiar but if he is him being transformed into an animal for the first time might be cute if anyone's interested in that making his survival harder. ]

Anne Shirley Cuthbert | Anne with an E | Legend

[personal profile] fortheimagination 2024-08-13 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Arrival

Even though Anne had reached the great and mature age of seventeen, she'd shared a few kisses with Gilbert that made her cheeks burn with delight, she hadn't given up her love for the fanciful.

She knew that she had to focus, she was going to be going to college soon as a proper young lady, even though she'd still scale trees and wander through the woods whenever the chances presented themselves.

As a result, when Anne encountered a talking fox, she was overjoyed, trying to pepper the fox with questions. Much to her disappointment, the fox was clear on one thing and one thing only: go with her and reach her full potential.

That was a lure that Anne Shirley couldn't possibly resist. Potential was nice, but the notion of an entire land filled with talking foxes was what enchanted her. And turning into a falling star--a falling star!!--was a source of delight.

If only the landing had been nicer. She'd landed right on her rump which was rather painful and a bit humiliating. Anne sat for a moment, trying to focus on the feeling of briefly being a star and not on what had to become a rather painful bruise on her bottom.

Getting to her feet wasn't quite so easy as she'd anticipated either now that she had a pair of size-appropriate dragonfly wings on her back. The fear of bruising was completely eclipsed by the glee of discovering her new wings and she turned to the closest person standing to her.

"Isn't the most exciting thing to ever happen? I'm going to miss Matthew and Marilla and Diana and--and Gilbert terribly much, but this is another world! And I have wings! Do you have wings, may I see them? Oh, I can't wait to truly explore and see all that can be seen!"

This is Our Get Along Shirt

Anne knew that she had the tendency to talk perhaps more than she should. She was terribly careless in the kitchen. She daydreamed in school more than she should. And maybe, maybe others could be annoyed by her desire to fix every problem in her path.

But what she'd done to deserve this, she'd had no idea.

She was trapped in an overlarge men's shirt emblazoned with the foolish slogan 'This is our Get Along Shirt' with someone who hadn't taken her romantic musings over their new home well.

Anne felt it was terribly unfair. For so many years, the only beauty and romance to be found were in her imagination. It was only after coming to Green Gables that she found a home, a place to belong, people to belong with.

She was entirely certain she'd find such people here as well, but this person wasn't one of them.

She gave them a thoroughly cross look and asserted "I don't see how this is my fault or why I should be punished because of what you did. All I did was try to strike up a friendly conversation, so this is your fault! We must get out of this thing as soon as we can for you're not improving on greater exposure!"

Anne attempted to cross her arms within the shirt and failed, irking her further.

Nina Sayers | Black Swan | Familiar (CW: mental illness--delusions, accidental self-deletion)

[personal profile] donetodeath 2024-08-13 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Arrival

The last thing Nina remembered was the brilliant stage lights, finally satisfied at having become perfect. After so much time, after so many people getting in her way, she'd been perfect. That was all she'd wanted to be.

Finding out that there was a level of perfection even higher than she'd attained was irresistible. She strongly suspected that she'd not have the chance to improve further on the stage at home, but the stage in a new world was a new challenge, one Nina felt she had to rise up to.

Though, she may have thought twice if she'd been told that she'd fall from the sky.

Nina's arms had sprouted black feathers all the way up and down them and she attempted to use them to fly, only for herself to change. Change into a real black swan. Even here, she was the Swan Queen.

She landed lightly on the ground in her swan form, but there was another small problem Nina had neglected to consider.

Now that she was a swan, how did she become a woman again? Nina waddled gracelessly (which humiliated her so badly, all she wanted to do was hide when she realized that real swans weren't graceful all the time) to another new Star Child and honked at them hopefully.

If they saw her as a swan, maybe she hadn't let her imagination in those moments on the stage carry her away after all?

Scavengers Survive

Nina gaped as the rules of the--what was it? A game? A trick? An act of cruelty?--were explained.

She was to make a list of everything she'd need to survive, but survival to Nina meant something entirely different than what she was afraid they meant by survival.

Nina had given her list: toe shoes, leotards, dance skirts, shrugs, and a nail clipper. All things she needed to survive back home, but as soon as she confirmed that she was done making her list, she was given a terribly judgmental look. At the time, it had made little sense.

Now it did. Nina was trying to find her way through a terrible forest with trees and insects and seemingly no way out!

She'd found the items on her list handily enough, but rocks and sticks penetrated the soles of toe shoes that had never been meant for hiking through the forest. She was certain that she was being feasted upon by mosquitoes and she was afraid of worse sticking themselves to her as she blindly crashed through the forest. One direction was as good as any other, she was terribly lost.

Perhaps irrevocably lost.

So Nina sat down on a boulder and began to cry nowhere near as quietly as she thought she was.

His own list was basic necessities, his clothing thankfully undamaged, although it wasn't entirely suited to the terrain either. That could probably be fixed later, but for the moment, he'd at least located a cube, even if he wasn't able to open it, holding the item in one hand as he studies it.

Although he's not unaware of his surroundings either, listening and looking around every few seconds. If this is the afterlife, he's not exactly thrilled so far.

"There is some trick to this, I'm sure." Although there was no pattern or markings on the box, no visible hint.

Quattro had plans to work on his personal level of preparedness, so when the fox brought him to Amrita with instructions to make a list he already had quite a bit on his mind. He wasn't quite dressed for it, and the pants, boots, and sleeveless top weren't going to be in good shape by the time he made it out.

He hadn't found anything yet until he caught sight of bright colors that didn't fit in the natural environment. Quattro arrived just in time to hear the man speak.

"This place likes to make us cooperate and get to know one another to get anything done," Quattro explained, pausing while he was still a reasonable distance away.

He'd heard footsteps moments before the man stepped into view but kept his distance. "I suppose that does make sense. Two or more can be better than one person, depending on the circumstances." Although that doesn't mean he trusts this stranger.

"I don't know what this one contains, but if you want to try opening it." He sets it down and takes a few steps back, giving him space if he want to try the cube.

"This place has it's own idea of what makes sense and what doesn't, but I doubt I can open this by myself," Quattro said as he made his way over to the cube and picked it up. He turned it over in his hands and tried tracing over the sides and edges.

"I'm Lieutenant Quattro Bajeena, of the AEUG before I wound up here. I don't recognize your uniform."

"That's good to know, at least." He does watch the blond handle the cube before he introduces himself.

"Treize Khushrenada. I'm unfamiliar with that organization you mentioned as well so it would seem we are from different places." Or times, but he does at least move closer.

"I was a general before I came here." Among other roles he'd taken on.

"A general. Ground forces, then? We could also be from different times. This place is funny like that, but the safe bet is different places," Quattro said, pulling off one glove to give bare skin a try before quickly giving up and putting the glove back on.

He held the cube out towards Treize, "We could try touching it at the same time."

If that didn't work, Quattro wasn't sure he wanted to go through with whatever forced team building exercise might be required to open it. But he was also aware he have might not have a choice.

[personal profile] oz_leader 2024-08-14 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
"Ground, air, space." He answered after a moment. "We handled all battle fronts as needed." When the cube is offered, he does move to close the distance, his hand settling over the cube.

"If it doesn't, perhaps we can find someone else who did figure out how to open the cube."
betteroffred: (char9)

[personal profile] betteroffred 2024-08-14 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
The mention of space had Quattro visibly more interested. But he held his tongue, more interested in figuring out the cubes than finding another possible spacenoid or mobile suit pilot.

He half expected nothing to happen when they both touched it, but he felt the cube itself vanish. Quattro started to pull his hand away only to stop as green material expanded outward where the cube had been.

"I didn't expect it to be that easy," Quattro admitted.

"That's a relief at least." He eyes the fabric for a moment before picking it up. "A bag is useful enough to start with, I suppose." Although they'll need more than to make this functional.

"We should find more, if you have no objections to working together for the time being."

[personal profile] betteroffred 2024-08-14 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
"I'd be happy to work with you," Quattro said with a friendly smile. "They should be easy enough to spot."

He had been keeping an eye out for anything out of place, but now that he knows they're looking for more of those little cubes it'll be easier.

"You mentioned space, do you have mobile suits where you're from? They're large humanoid-shaped machines."

Kimiko Miyashiro | The Boys | Legend

[personal profile] vocetacet 2024-08-14 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
While she didn't have any set expectations for what would be waiting on the other side of wherever it was the fox was leading her, Kimiko didn't think having to scavenge and survive out in the wilderness would have crossed her mind. Her brow furrows at the fox as she gives her instructions, turning that frown to the Relic in her hand. A list of things she would need to survive, huh? It shouldn't be that difficult, she thinks, as she steps away to find some place to sit quietly on her own. Kimiko knows the basics of what she needs to survive even in a forest like this, and even if she can't find everything on her list, she'll be able to manage well enough. The bits of luxury she's been able to experience since being with the Boys has hardly made Kimiko forget how to get by with less.

( a ) Kimiko opens her Relic, accepting the little pop-up that offers her a tutorial on how to navigate the device. She's pleased to find it doesn't handle all that differently from her phone back home, and she's quick to open up notes she was instructed to write her list within. That's about all she does quickly though. Kimiko takes her time with writing her list. Nearly each time she adds something to it, she reads over the list two to three times. She doesn't want to forget anything that would be difficult to improvise with what she does remember. Kimiko heaves a small sigh as she contemplates the possibility of including a few items that aren't strictly necessary. The instructions were clear, after all, that she should put down what's going to lend itself to survival. Not things that would necessarily make her feel a little happier or just be a nice creature comfort to have. Looking up from her Relic, Kimiko scans the surrounding area for someone else still working on their list. With a Star Child in sight, she stands up and walks over, waving at them with a small smile.

( b ) The list is done eventually after enough notes are compared and Kimiko is ready to head out to start looking for the supplies. Spotting someone else seemingly at the same point as her, she figures that the list creation as a collaborative exercise was successful, so why shouldn't looking for the things on the lists also be a little easier with someone else? She scurries after the other Star Child, gently tapping them on the arm to get their attention and pause for a moment. Kimiko smiles and holds up a finger before quickly typing out a message on her Relic. She holds it out for the other Star Child to read.

Do you want to team up and look together?

Bill Cipher | Gravity Falls | Myth

[personal profile] equilateralmuse 2024-08-14 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
(cw: spoilers for The Book of Bill)

Denial Arrival

Bill has no idea how long he’s been in the Solitary Wellness Void this time. It’s probably somewhere between forty-five minutes and sixteen hours, but it feels like an eternity.

An eternity of telling himself that he’s fine and he’ll get out of this whole place sooner or later. He’s Bill Cipher! Not even a high-security prison-slash-mandatory-therapy-centre outside of time and space can hold him forever!

Someone will come along.

And someone actually does.

He doesn’t really care the specifics of who or what this fox is–there’s plenty of upstart deities in the multiverse. The important thing is: she’s a sucker.

He follows her without a second thought. Hell, without a first thought. Someone’s letting him out–the rest will be a piece of cake. He’ll be back to his old self in no time.

Somewhere in the middle of half-listening to her little ‘survival school’ pitch, he realises that something is very wrong. But it’s… fine. He’s fine. This is a minor setback at worst!

He’ll even play along and start writing a little list.

What do people need for survival anyway? Gold? Chlorine tablets? Interdimensional rifts? Bees? Some yummy glass?

Anger

Some time later, a scruffy little man wearing an orange prison jumpsuit can be found yelling at… the sky? He mostly appears to be yelling at the sky.

“Was this YOU, ya big frilly JERK? Your idea of a JOKE? Or some new WELLNESS EXERCISE? Does she WORK for you? Or is this your INFINITE CYCLE of karmic BLAH BLAH BLAH… you said I’d get to be a NEWT. No one said anything about HUMAN, buddy!”

On that note, he glares at his hands, wriggling his fingers at arm’s length like they’ve done something to personally offend him.

It’s one thing to possess a human body–all the perks with none of the impending mortality–but the novelty is wearing off fast when it wasn’t his choice to be shaped like this.

Bargaining

Whatever. At least he can deal with his immediate problems: being locked up somewhere new, and the fact no one is paying attention to him.

Because he needs attention. He may not be a literal idea-based-entity at this particular moment, but he sure still feels like he’ll die without it.

Time to get on whatever equivalent of a soap box he can scrounge up in this place. And hope no one pays too much attention to the fact he’s covered in… syrup?

“Say, pal! That’s right, I’m talking to you. And you over there, sir-and-or-madam. Are you really happy playing along with this whole charade? Didn’t think so. I bet you’re way too clever for that. If you ask me, what this calls for is a good old fashioned prison riot–what are you waiting for, a permission slip? If you let a little thing like rules or entropy or giant hands hold you back…”

And he’ll go on this way, unless someone stops him.

Depression
(cw: mild eye/body horror)

Or, even later, you might find him curled up in a corner of the school, muttering to himself.

While he’s mostly human, the Fox has clearly marked him as a Myth: between the barbed tail and the ram’s horns, it’s hard to miss.

Currently, the tail is wrapped tightly around his knees, and he has a white-knuckled grip on his horns, one of which curls around to end deep inside his empty eye socket. His other eye stares into the middle distance, unfocused.

Wildcard Feel free to throw anything else my way! Or just find him around the school climbing the walls and trying to eat the cubes.
