February-March 2024 Test Drive Meme

February-March 2024 TDM
Introduction

[ TDM QuestionsJump to CommentsFull Navigation ]

This Test Drive meme is open to all.

Welcome to Folkmore's monthly Test Drive Meme! Please feel free to test drive any and all characters regardless of your intent to apply or whether you have an invite or not.

All TDMs are game canon and work like "mini-events". For new players and characters, you can choose to have your TDM thread be your introduction thread upon acceptance or start fresh. Current players are also allowed to have in-game characters post to the TDM so long as they mark their top levels ‘Current Character.’

TDM threads can be used for spoon spending at any time by characters accepted into the game.

Playing and interacting with the TDMs will allow characters to immediately obtain canon items from homes especially weapons or other things they may have had on their person when they were pulled from their worlds! There will always be a prompt that provides some sort of "reward" to characters who complete certain tasks.

Current players are always encouraged to tag new people on the TDM!

🦊 New Star Children meet the Fox still in their worlds, and she brings them into the new realm of Folkmore. As you follow her, your body begins to change and new characteristics emerge. These may stay for a while, or perhaps they will hide away after. And during all of this, the Fox explains to you where you will be going: to Folkmore.

and then... you fall like a shooting star, falling to the land in a burst of starlight.

🦊 Experienced Star Children are already familiar with this time of the month. There are shooting stars all across the sky, and some fall to the land, which means the Fox has brought new arrivals. These newly arrived Star Children will face some tests, but Thirteen wants the more seasoned residents to participate as well.

Perhaps you follow the falling stars on your own, or perhaps the Fox simply teleports you there, but it appears you too will be part of this.

Content Warnings: Power Nullification, Potential Kidnapping, Potential Animal Spirit Harm

The island of Never Fade can no longer be seen in the sky from elsewhere in Folkmore, enclosed within a large purple tinted cloud. Within that cloud, the island is under water—a dreamy purple underwater that all Star Children can breath in if they breath and function in if they function on electricity, so on and so forth. It causes no more difficulties than reduced visibility and greater effort to walk. It's even possible to swim underneath the island, so long as Star Children make sure to make landfall before they get too exhausted and… well… fall.

Friendnapped

The purple water has streaks of silver shot throughout it. Beware, these silver streaks neutralize powers, canon and role abilities alike, for at least an hour. A neutralized Legend won't be able to sense others in danger. A neutralized Myth won't sense danger coming. A neutralized Familiar won't be able to shapeshift to help others. That may set of a danger alarm but not any spidey-sense. These silver streaks are harbingers of spirits recently returned to Folkmore thanks to donations at the Shattered Spoon Shrine: lonely sharks.

The source of the silver streaks in the water, these silver gray sharks swim up and gently bite people. These bites make people go instantly limp but otherwise don't do any damage. They won't even break the skin. Once limp, the lonely sharks take their prey new best friends down to a cave or grotto off the underside of Never Fade. These caves are full of silver water, saturated by the magic of lonely sharks, and the entrances are covered by a thin silver barrier that prevents Star Children from leaving. That means should a Star Child track down where someone is being kept, should they enter its home, they too will be trapped there.

Being held by the lonely sharks isn't the worst experience. These spirits will try to please their new friends, giving them their favorite foods and perhaps even an item from home. This may even be a weapon or magical item. Mind, the magic of these items will be neutralized in the shark's cave. It is possible to fight a lonely shark, even to kill one, but that will only be a temporary measure. Star Children will remain trapped and have to wait for the lonely shark to revive—with even more golden cracks than before. In the end, the only way to escape are hugs, cuddles, and other measures of friendship. Once all the golden cracks have thinned and disappeared, Star Children can leave.

Spread the Love

By the time mid-March comes around, most of the lonely sharks have been fully healed and no longer kidnap Star Children. Instead they swim the None of the Above tunnels below the island's surface, where they provide guidance to Star Children who ask them how to get somewhere. If Star Children have nowhere particular in mind, the lonely sharks encourage Star Children to make their way toward the Shattered Spoon Shrine.

The lonely sharks still create silver streaks in the water that neutralize powers, but they will accompany Star Children and warn them of some of the dangers. When voices call their names, the sharks will snuggle up against Star Children to provide comfort. They're devoted to helping Star Children reach the shrine. Once there, they will encourage the Star Children to donate Lore to one of the broken spoons there, each spoon representing spirits who have left, spirits who became shells of themselves from lack of lore, or ghosts.

Star Children who donate Lore will find their companion lonely shark presenting them with an item from home. This may even be a weapon or magical item. Mind, the magic will be neutralized until the Star Child has spent at least an hour away from the silvery water lonely sharks create. Lonely sharks will happily spend as much time with Star Children as they're willing but will show the way back to the surface either via LIM (Lavender Institute of the Mind) or the None of the Above tunnels.

  • Never Fade is underwater within a cloud.
  • Silver streaks in the water neutralize powers, both canon and Role based.
  • Lonely sharks kidnap Star Children and take them to caves on the underside of Never Fade.
  • Star Children who find those caves are trapped too.
  • Escape by hugs, cuddles, and being friends.
  • By the second month, most lonely sharks are healed and found in the tunnels.
  • Lonely sharks guide Star Children to the Shattered Spoon Shrine to donate Lore to help others.
  • Either when captive or once donating Lore, lonely sharks will give Star Children an item from home.

Content Warnings: Forced Relocation, Potential Secret Revelation, Potential Coerced Physical Intimacy

With the wide range of Star Children from many different worlds, sharing similarities, it's no surprise when moments of deja vu happen. That sense of the familiar with the new, the sense of something that happened before without quite being able to place it… or perhaps it being impossible. Regardless, when that connective moment happens, the Star Children involved are transported to a windmill home from the Cloud Colonies. They land together on a couch before a large television with all the makings of a movie night. There could be wine and cheese. There could be soda and popcorn. There could be tea or other hot beverages. There's a cozy blanket (only one). The movie has already been selected, and it starts playing.

Headliner

The movie is roughly based off one of the Star Children's lives, specifically for the Star Child that experience deja vu and triggered this experience. Regardless of the moment of deja vu, the plot of the movie is based off of some real or potential relationship—romantic or queer platonic—in their life. That Star Child can recognize some similarities immediately. If they had any doubts, they get a text message on their relic as the movie starts:

You need to get closer with your companion(s). You can either talk about what happened (or didn't) or not talk wink wink about it with them. The choice is yours (and theirs)! Have fun!

It's possible to ignore the message, at least for a while. The longer the movie plays, the more apparent it becomes that it's based off that Star Child. The starring character's clothes will change to resemble theirs. The cadence of their voice will shift to imitate theirs. Their facial features will shift. These changes will become more and more heavy handed as the movie goes on until even the most clueless companion will have real trouble not picking up on it. It may get harder and harder to distract them from talking about it! There's no pause button, and the only way to mute the movie is to *ahem* distract themselves from it until it becomes an indistinct background murmur.

Remake

If any Star Children thought this experience might have been a Valentine's Day prank, they'll be poorly mistaken come mid-March when it continues with a twist. The movie less closely resembles any one Star Child's life (whew?)… because it blends the lives of all those present together into a new story. One character is based off each Star Child, and it fits the other Star Child into the role of someone who was or could have been emotionally and/or physically intimate with them. If they had any doubts, each Star child gets a text message on their relic as the movie starts:

You need to get closer with your companion(s). You can either talk about what happened (or didn't) or not talk wink wink about it with them. The choice is yours (and theirs)! Have fun!

Not only does each Star Child have to decide what approach they want to take, but the other Star Child may pick up on what they're putting down! One Star Child may want to talk it out, but the other one desperately doesn't. Oh noes, how shall it be resolved? Well, the longer it takes, the more clearly the film demonstrates one way they could resolve it—a fictionalized ending, happy or sad or bittersweet or anything else, between the characters as they more closely resemble those watching them on the sofa. No one's free until they have a heart to heart or a something to something else. Any physical intimacy can do.

  • Experience a moment of deja vu and get transported to a cozy living room in a Cloud Colony windmill.
  • For the first month, the 'host' Star Child gets a text letting them know to get intimate—emotionally or physically.
  • For the second month, all Star Children get that text.
  • For the first month, the movie is based on the 'host' Star Child's experiences, what did or could have happened. As the movie progresses, it becomes more and more obvious that's the case.
  • For the second month, the movie is a story blending Star Children's experiences together. That too will become more obvious over time.
  • Some form of intimacy is the only way out!

Zack is quiet for a bit in response, following the other's gaze towards the TV. He's not usually one for quiet moments- at least, he used to not be. Nibelheim and the lab changed that, and he's still slowly stumbling his way back to the way he was before. (There's no going back, not entirely. But he'd like to get as close as he can, if only to prove that Hojo and death didn't break him.)

"Sorry," he manages, finally. "This is kind of weird for me. We were friends, too."

Were, because Sephiroth died. Were, because Sephiroth lost his mind and Zack had to be the one to try and put him down, though he hadn't dealt the killing blow. Were, because the kid in front of him has no idea who he is, and isn't the Sephiroth he knew. He can't find any closure in two of those reasons; he'll only be able to voice the third aloud. He has a feeling this is only going to get harder.

\o/ Stress for everybody!

[personal profile] miniroth 2024-03-24 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
And if history repeats itself, for myriad potential reasons, in another decade or so, a lot of innocent people are going to die at this boy's hands. Madness, terror and suffering is only a matter of time; Zack's talking to a dead man before he even has the chance to grow into a man at all. Fate isn't particularly kind to any of them.

Were is past tense. "But not anymore."

And Zack is very much alive, which had implications, so he bends what little knowledge he has about friendship to working the puzzle out. It was obvious Zack was defensive of the decision to not kill Genesis, be it by orders or as mercy, and he didn't talk like they'd become enemies.

Were. Something got removed from the equation, and it wasn't Zack. How do you become not-a-friend, without losing that friendship in the doing? "When do I die?"
zacrifice: (54)

[personal profile] zacrifice 2024-03-24 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Zack frowns at that. Even as a kid, he's way too perceptive. Or he jumps to unfortunate conclusions. "Don't know," he answers, and that much is true. He wasn't there, he didn't see the where or the when. "I'm the one who died."

If they're gonna talk about death so bluntly, it's better to get it out in the open rather than dance around it. He's not a good enough liar to pretend Sephiroth didn't die, or that their friendship hadn't ended when Nibelheim burned, so he can let his own demise be the distraction. He doesn't take his eyes off the television, though he barely parses anything on the screen. He just doesn't want to meet Sephiroth's eyes in this moment. Talking about his own death is still... really difficult.
miniroth: (pic#17076197)

[personal profile] miniroth 2024-03-24 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Difficult conversations may well qualify for the requirements Thirteen put on their being able to leave. Would the door unlock, if this stayed so uncomfortable?

"You're very lively for a dead man." It might not be complete nonsense, people could be brought back with standard resuscitation techniques. "I can only guess based on what I've observed from others, but friends coming back from the dead is a cause for celebration, isn't it? Not the loss of said friendship."

Kids learn all about death pretty early, and he earlier than most. Friendship is ... harder, he had no real practical experience with it at all, but there were of course stories, and they all shared similar themes. He should perhaps demand more information about this supposed death, but as Zack very clearly ISN'T dead, at most it had to be terrible injuries. Ones he's obviously recovered from. What else was there to know, except how or why this would end a relationship? "If at some point I am allowed such things, then I'd think I'd be quite pleased to have an associate alive. Especially were it to happen after the loss of the other one."

Three. It wasn't one lost friend, it was all of them, wasn't it? But Angeal hasn't entered the equation at all yet.
zacrifice: (346)

[personal profile] zacrifice 2024-03-24 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Zack is puzzled for a moment - does he think it was a fakeout or something? Maybe that's the logical conclusion. True revivals aren't really a thing, after all. Disappearing and being "presumed" dead is common for Shinra, too. Memos had gone out for Angeal, Genesis, and even himself that they were KIA well before any of them came close to dying. (Sephiroth too, apparently, but he was gone for five years the way Zack was, so that's fair enough.) He did die, though- it's just that the fox can bring back the dead in this world.

He thinks about it, but before he can come up with a response, Sephiroth continues, and that makes Zack smile. If he's allowed, huh? "Is that your way of saying you want to be friends? Because I'm all in."

Even if... what happens, happens... that's later. Sephiroth was a dear friend to him before things went south. He wouldn't mind extending a hand to his younger self.
miniroth: (pic#17077674)

[personal profile] miniroth 2024-03-24 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
That rather thoroughly derails Sephiroth's train of thought on whether or not Zack had died, or if Zack had 'died'. He snaps right around, surprised. "W-what? No, I meant--" He wasn't allowed to waste time with things like friendships, all it was was a distraction from his training, his purpose. He could hear the sneering scorn in Hojo's voice, even though the scientist was entire worlds away.

"..."

Hojo isn't here. Shinra isn't here. All his training meant precisely diddly-squat, and who was going to report back that he wasn't doing what he was supposed to? "I.. suppose..?"
zacrifice: (118)

[personal profile] zacrifice 2024-03-25 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
'I suppose' is not exactly a vote of huge confidence, but considering the shaky ground they're standing on at this point, he will take it gladly.

Zack laughs, clapping him cheerfully on the shoulder. "Great! We're friends now. No more past tense." Maybe it'll help him think less about all the past tense stuff that ruined his life. The fact that he doesn't have to talk about anyone dying now is an added bonus.
miniroth: (pic#17077671)

[personal profile] miniroth 2024-03-25 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
He's not entirely sure what just happened, still looking utterly poleaxed when Zack slaps him on the shoulder.

A silent few moments in review doesn't help any either; he will in time learn Zack is a completely different sort of force of nature than he's used to dealing with and this kind of completely illogical chain of events may one day become routine.

"...Is that how it's supposed to work?" It didn't make any sense! "You just.. declare you're friends and it's done, just like that?"
zacrifice: (113)

[personal profile] zacrifice 2024-03-25 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
"Sure, why not?" Zack shrugs. If Sephiroth is expecting a complex explanation of friendship he will be sorely disappointed. "That's how it can start, anyway. If two people decide to be friends, then they're friends! Simple as that. It takes work after that, but it's easier than you might think."

Although that may just be because friendship comes naturally to Zack. Hopefully Sephiroth can follow his lead at this age. ...What a strange role reversal, though. Back in the day he was the plucky teenager and Sephiroth was the adult guiding the way forward.
miniroth: (pic#17076197)

[personal profile] miniroth 2024-03-25 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
He doesn't know enough about it to question further, maybe that really was how people made friends. It wasn't as if Hojo's labs really gave him a lot of opportunities to watch how other people did friendships, so it was as plausible as anything else was.

At least if a paradox was going to erase Zack from existing, it would have done so already, so his chances of having to explain a friend that doesn't exist anymore is pretty slim. The recording would be proof enough of that.. and he leaves it running on purpose, just in case. "I assumed it would be .. much more complicated."

This was going to take some puzzling out. And now that he was free of being tracked, maybe watch a bit more of how other people handled it. Before the shark found him and then he got lured into an entirely invented movie, there were plenty of people around, so all he had to do was find a nice place to watch from.

There's Shinra helicopters on the television, armored vehicles rolling beneath. Was it a victory march? He'd have to rewatch it later. "..For what it's worth it's understandable you chose to leave. I am uncertain I wish to return, myself." No. He didn't. While there was certainly a fair bit of guilt over knowing his team was on their own, surely they'd be alright. He could claim he had no choice in the matter..
zacrifice: (165)

[personal profile] zacrifice 2024-03-25 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Zack tilts his head questioningly at that. He didn't expect to hear it, certainly not from Sephiroth still so young in his career, though the words themselves are similar to what he'd heard before. Back during the desertion, after losing Angeal and Genesis, he'd all but threatened to leave Shinra himself, depending on the results of their investigation. Sephiroth was a loyal SOLDIER for many years, but he was not without his limits.

"What happened?" he asks, his voice gentler than before.
miniroth: (pic#)

[personal profile] miniroth 2024-03-25 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"Nothing, really." Beyond what every SOLDIER endured, presumably. It was as likely full of blood, sweat and tears for Zack as it had been for him, the system got perfected enough at some point to be effective on a mass scale if there were that many running around before the defection. "I never had a choice about any of it, til the fox appeared. My life was already planned out, deviating isn't an option." He glances towards Zack briefly. "It's all made up, you know. They wanted a hero to put on the posters, so they keep manufacturing all these great 'achievements' so people will sign up for the program."

But that's probably what every SOLDIER dealt with. The usual. Eat what Shinra says, go where Shinra says, wear the right things, say the right words. It's all about the image. "But maybe I do have a choice, now. That's all."
zacrifice: (184)

[personal profile] zacrifice 2024-03-25 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Zack smirks faintly in response. All made, up, huh... how true those words are, more than Sephiroth probably knows. He'd been so annoyed that day years ago, when his accomplishments at Fort Tamblin had been dusted under a rug in favour of Shinra's made-up tales about Sephiroth ending the war practically single-handedly. Just a dumb kid expecting fairness, when the company had turned heroics into a commodity to sell. Ah, well. Not like being publicly acknowledged would have made his life go any better.

"You do have a choice now, yeah. Shinra isn't here to throw orders at you, there's no chain of command. You can do whatever you want." He leans his elbow on the arm of the couch, chin resting on his hand. "Have you ever thought about it before? What you could do, if you could decide for yourself?"
miniroth: (pic#17077675)

[personal profile] miniroth 2024-03-25 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It wouldn't surprise him at all. As it is, the only thing he had to actually call his own achievements were the recent troubles in the archipelago, but by the time that got back to the mainland, surely it was going to be something about how he came in and singlehandedly defeated all the bad guys, saved all the good guys and pet a dog or two.

The last one will be true, the rest.. "Of course not."

Who expected a talking fox from another reality? Who could ever predict such a thing? "I've always been taught to focus on more rational possibilities. Why waste time on things that would never happen?" Though the rational possibilities were much vaster than they were even a week ago. "I suppose I have a good opportunity to find out. Did you ever think about what you'd do outside SOLDIER, when you were still in it?"
zacrifice: (186)

[personal profile] zacrifice 2024-03-26 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
"Ahh... while I was in SOLDIER? No way. I had too much else going on to think about it." Besides perhaps a fleeting thought or two- say, if he had more time in between missions to spend with Aerith, if he wasn't constantly being called away, maybe if he had a different job... but it never lasted more than a few seconds. A normal life never suited him. At least, not before the labs. Here, the peace and quiet has been a mixed bag, but surprisingly nice.

"After I escaped, I thought I might become a mercenary. That kind of job is real versatile, y'know? Get paid to do anything for anyone. Every day would be different." Sounds cool and appealing. He could build his own reputation, a badass who helps people, no matter who they are. A real hero, unlike Shinra. "Since I got here, I've thought about it more. Haven't come to a decision yet, but the time and freedom to really think about it feels endless. There's no rush!"

Although the idea of a 'life' here feels very fleeting. It's not like, if he decided on something, he could go home and do it. This world is all he's got.
miniroth: (Default)

if this reads too oddly I'll edit in the morning, migraine issues :(

[personal profile] miniroth 2024-03-26 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
During, though, the idea of leaving was equally preposterous it seems, at least that's how Sephiroth chooses to hear it. At least up until Hojo. "A mercenary."

Doing anything at all, for money? "So you wanted to be an unofficial Turk." They did everything and anything and got paid very well to do it. Their uniforms were, in his rather untested opinion, much better than the ones SOLDIERs were expected to wear.

It doesn't sound like mockery. Even though they were only the best that natural humans could produce, he respected their abilities.

What little he's seen of Folkmore suggested there was little call for mercenaries and less call for real heroism. Someone driven by the desire for action and adventure might well get quickly bored. "..Are you okay with that? With no rush."
zacrifice: (220)

all good! sorry about the migraine :c

[personal profile] zacrifice 2024-03-26 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
The idea of being a Turk is kind of laughable. Him, wearing that stiff-looking suit all the time? Cleaning up Shinra's messes? No thanks. He'd never considered them to be like mercenaries. Close to the end, he didn't know what to think of them. On one hand, they'd helped Hojo round up he and Cloud, so they could be locked away in the labs. On the other hand, Cissnei had looked the other way and helped them out. Not all Turks are the worst. Just... kinda feels like most of 'em.

He doesn't know what the Turks are like in Sephiroth's time, though, so he leaves it alone. "I'm not... not okay with it, if that makes sense." It barely feels like it could make sense. "I'm happy here, though. I've got people I love in this world. I don't mind taking my time."
miniroth: (pic#17077674)

weather changes cause them. e_e

[personal profile] miniroth 2024-03-26 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much the same as they are in Zack's time, but with a somewhat different roster. He's aware of what they do, both beneficial and not, but it seems very mercenary to him. That they pick up a new job in scouting potential SOLDIER members is an unknown; how would that even work? What if they refused? "..Ambivalent, then?"

Not upset about it doesn't necessarily mean happy about it either though it sounded like Zack hit the jackpot in another way, his family must be here. Away from the people hunting him and with kith and kin? That'd be a good reason to not want to leave. "That's good." It's said cautiously, as if he's unsure that's something someone should be congratulated over or not.

What were the chances anyone he'd know would be here? His family, even though he had never met them? The chances were astronomically low but that didn't mean they were zero. After a long moment of hesitation, a small photograph is offered, removed from its hiding place inside a locket that hadn't been in his hands a minute ago. "You haven't by any chance seen this woman, here or on our world?"

There's definitely a family resemblance between the person in the picture and Sephiroth, but also a bit like that ... thing in the Nibel reactor. Except this person is very obviously human, and not a horrific alien tentacle monster, and wearing a lab coat and definitely in one of many, many laboratories - not a victim, an accomplice.
zacrifice: (65)

i know that feel :/

[personal profile] zacrifice 2024-03-28 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Ambivalent feels a little too cynical for him - he's hardly ever neutral about anything - but he doesn't know how else to describe it, so he leaves it at that. Technically it isn't a bad way of describing how he feels about Thirteen, the lack of clear direction... all of it. He's here on borrowed time and trying to make the most of it. That's good enough for now.

Anything else he might have said or thought is lost when Sephiroth shows him the photo, however. There's something eerie about it, an uncanny valley of similar but different from what he might expect. Just a normal human woman, by all appearances. But familiar, in a subtle way that's just close enough to be uncomfortable. It doesn't click immediately why- he hadn't gotten a very clear look at Jenova, too busy being pissed and angry at the man this kid would eventually become. But when the resemblance clicks he just feels confused more than anything else. She was an alien, a monster, not this incredibly normal science lady.

His expression is decidedly mixed, and he's quiet for perhaps a little too long to say no, so eventually he settles on, "She looks... familiar, I guess. Not sure why. Who is it?"
miniroth: (pic#17077675)

Getting old sucks. I always thought 'my knee hurts so weather is changing' was made up

[personal profile] miniroth 2024-03-28 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe he was right, if that lingering silence and 'familiar' meant anything. If this world gave Zack his loved ones, maybe he too..

It's more of a lead than he's ever gotten, and his entire demeanor changes, lighting up with suspiciously childlike hope. He did try to act proper and grown up and all that so he wasn't looked down on, but occasionally he very much looks his age. "If you will, please try to recall why she's familiar. No-one's ever recognized her at all before." Except Hojo, but the less that gets said about him the better, and his words run together in the sudden sharpened excitement of possibly having some kind of lead. "I'd worried when I lost the necklace in Rhadore I'd never find it again but the shark had it here."

That shark had his eternal gratitude now. Should everything somehow go terribly awry, the shark will still be spared. "Her name's Jenova, she's my mother. I know it's not cool to be looking for my mom at my age, but I ... don't have anyone else. I'm sure she's still alive, or there'd be death records and I haven't found any. And if she's familiar to you, and you're from the future, then she has to be out there."

It.. might actually be, couldn't it? A perfectly ordinary woman, instead of an alien monster; years could easily blur the memory of what she looks like enough where the lab coat, the setting are forgotten, and the ordinary by circumstance must become extraordinary. But for now, she's a human, and her child surely must be too, still looking for her even at this age. Maybe if he'd still had that photograph in another fifteen years, a lot of people would have survived.

....

What. What the hell. Zack can't even pretend to not be confused by that revelation. Jenova? It sure as hell is not. Unless Jenova can pretend to be human. That, or Hojo and the science division are lying to-

-oh. Wow he sure stumbled into the most obvious explanation, huh. Now he just feels stupid.

Zack wonders at the point of it, now. Hojo was so proud of his accomplishments, of Jenova and Sephiroth's potential. Wouldn't it have benefitted him for Sephiroth to believe himself as better than human, the son of an ancient, supposedly all-powerful alien? Or was Hojo counting on him finding out by accident one day and going bananas about it? And why was Jenova cells part of the SOLDIER treatment if it was such a big secret? (Big shocker, Shinra's inconsistent and lying about everything... ugh, this is making him tired already.)

"I don't think it's uncool or anything. Moms are important, no matter what age you are." He shrugs, opting for the... less mentally devastating train of thought to poke at. "Actually, after I escaped Shinra, one of the first things I did was try to see my mom."

With no immediate leads for location and painfully aware the answer might be on a planet he lacks access to, Sephiroth carefully puts the photo back and closes the locket again with a faint metallic click. Losing it again must not happen. Who knows if another friendly shark would come along to return it. "Most people laugh." The embarrassment it caused was worth the risk most times, but his search was going nowhere, for a long time. "I know it's.. unlikely I'll just stumble upon someone who knows. Especially now."

It didn't hurt to keep trying. He settles back again, the bit of jewelry tucked away; when he speaks again that spark of naive hope is firmly muzzled into nothingness. "...That sounds dangerous."

A fugitive, going home? Predictable, and possibly lethal for those waiting at home. "I'm surprised troopers weren't waiting for you."

Sorry, Seph. Zack would have loved nothing more than to tell him that his very human mother was waiting for him somewhere in the world, and all he had to do was look. But he's not privy to that information, and the alternative is not coming out any time soon if Zack can help it.

(Distantly, he is aware that a trial could bring it into the open, and that could go very badly. But he's hoping that Thirteen will at least give them a bit of time to build some trust before everything falls apart, as it so often does.)

Sephiroth's observation does make him laugh, though. "Worse! It was the Turks! I had to book it out of there so fast."

Although not before reuniting with the director of SOLDIER and a hack scientist who for some reason decided following him to Gongaga was a great idea. All so they could eat Cloud's hair, probably.

Him finding his "family" before turned out so well, after all. But if she lives at all, very few would know about it, and Sephiroth chooses to believe that familiarity is some kind of confirmation in the absence of anything else. Just not something he can do much about right now..

He could wait. If it was years yet before he found anything substantial, then... Then so be it! At least someone kind of recognized her.

"And you successfully got away? They're practically bloodhounds when they choose to be, I'm surprised." More importantly, Zack was such a priority they sent Turks to find him, was it really just an escape or something more? He knows better than to ask, nobody who was left in Hojo's clutches much wanted to talk about anything adjacent to it. "It seems the movie's decided you make a more striking hero." He doesn't seem bothered, but fame was never a goal. Whoever they had playing Zack did seem to be having a nice triumphant moment at some Wutai fort, but the scene still has Rhadorans lying about, as much a casualty as the Wutaians. "Well done, you managed to fight in and achieve victory in a war that was over a decade before you even joined SOLDIER. Who comes up with this stuff?"

Successfully got away... well, more like Cissnei let him escape. And then the army caught up with him on the Midgar outskirts. Talking about that part is just miserable, so he's glad to refocus on the movie.

Zack glances back at the screen, watching the ending play out, and shakes his head with a sigh. "It was kind of real? Like, halfway right. The timing's off, our casualties were, uh." Genesis clones. "Not that. But it kinda did come close to ending the war in my time. That was the final fort Wutai had."

And then Shinra gave all the credit to Sephiroth, of course.

"Wonder what the point of mixing it up was? Familiar for both of us, but just wrong enough to make it extra weird... not a fan of that."
