I do not know whether old age can come for people, yet I have clearly seen that people age while they are here. It is most readily seen in the youngest of us, yet I mark it all the same across our friends and neighbors. We grow older, for whatever that means whence we come.

Wait, you can tell people are aging?

Yes, is that not apparent to everyone? You can see it in people's bodies and faces. You don't need to see their circulatory systems.

[fogsong]

Sometimes. It's obvious in kids, but I never really notice adults aging. Probably too slow a process to be obvious unless I'm looking for it.

Vampires age far slower than humans. In comparison, it happens immensely quickly, to age from start to finish in only a century. I can see it all around us in those we have here.

[fogsong]

[ ...Yeah, she's just not going to overthink that. ] Are you still aging?

I'm still fairly young, so yes, though I must admit the timeframe is such that it will not be noticeable for millennia. [ Mayerling smiles, aware the answer might as well be no to most people at that point. ]

Aww, I wanted to see old Mayerling. Would you get wrinkles?

Perhaps a couple distinguished eye crinkles given enough time.

Distinguished, of course. You'd look good with crinkles.

I should paint some on you sometime. [ Because good lord knows she will not be alive by the time they settle ] I gave Cloud a whole painted beard once.

By the time I gain such lines on my face, I shall have earned them, and they will carry the story of my life.

I would greatly appreciate it. Perhaps you could even paint the two of us together, both more distinguished and showing the years we've had together.

[ It is complete fantasy, but Mayerling wants it terribly. ]

I'm not super confident in my ability to do a self-portrait, but I'm willing to give it a go. For you.

I am confident enough for you. You are capable of so much, Sharon, and your art is less limited than you believe.

A variation on the starry outfits we have, perhaps something that would go well with our distinguished appearances.

I love when you cheerlead for me. [ It doesn't erase her doubts, but it certainly helps her to ignore them. ]

Maybe something in a deeper shade of blue? But I'm afraid my idea of distinguished includes monocles. [ Joking? Probably. ]

I support what I know is true, and I know full well how easy it is to doubt ourselves. I will show you the faith I have, so that it may be there when you lack your own.

[ Mayerling laughs, and his humor comes through their bond. ] I welcome a deeper shade of blue. I might recommend we change the silhouettes of the clothes slightly to show evolution over time, and if you wish to give each of us a monocle, then I support you.

Like my own personal rainy day fund of confidence. [ It's something that goes both ways even if she's rarely seen him doubt himself. ]

I leave the fashion decisions for this painting in your incredibly capable hands. [ She can get a duplicate made for the monocles (and giant distinguished mustaches). ]

As your very presence is an incredible mood lifter each and every day. [ Not enough that he's never sad or that the sense of brooding disappears. However, his life has a great amount of joy and happiness in it. That is all and more than he could ask. ]

I may take inspiration from my parents' fashion of choice, as I admit they are what comes to mind when it comes to older, more distinguished choices for dress. You may take whatever artistic license you feel fits the painting best. I defer to your expertise there.

Won't lie, I was thinking about your parents, too. Are there any paintings of them?

It pleases me that they came to mind. You may have noticed the differences to our styles when they visited Trench, even if that were not what was most immediately on your mind.

I had a painting of them long ago, but I must admit in the need to stay alive, its maintenance was not something that lasted the long millennia.

[fogsong]

Yeah, I was a little focused on not putting my foot in my mouth, but the differences definitely didn't escape me. Fashion changes.

You could get it back here, you know. [ Ah, the joys of Folkmore. No need to search the black sand beaches for family photos. ]

No matter the lengths I might go to convince you it was impossible to manage such a terrible feat, I felt the same anxiety around meeting your mother. It would be hypocritical of me to suggest you not be nervous.

[ Mayerling pauses as he considers the option. There are so many things he could summon with Lore, and he portions enough to always stay in a steady supply of synthetic blood. There's more beyond, enough for a painting. Yet, the simple act could become a great temptation. ]

In all the time I have spent making this burrow mine, then ours, I have endeavored not to lean heavily into the past, for fear I might become stuck with it. I could fill the place to bursting with all that I have lost, and none of it would matter the most compared to those I've lost. I must ponder it before committing to it.

Almost like it's totally normal.

I wouldn't think a family photo would be leaning too heavily into it, but I understand the need to consider it first. [ While Sharon would enjoy having the portrait around, the last thing she wants to do is pressure him. ]

I suppose that it is. It is a new matter to me, for all my experience, because humans in my world are genetically modified to fear vampires. It was not possible to meet and to get to know my loved one's families. They would try to kill me, and some of them did.

Thank you. I miss them, but I do not expect ever to see them again. The once was a blessing.

Did you try to meet some of their families? [ She could see him holding onto hope, trying again as if this time might be different. ]

I'm glad I got the chance to meet them.

I have only twice met any of their families, and those meetings did not go well. [ An immense understatement accompanied by pangs of sadness, anger, regret, and guilt. His emotions veer across the spectrum of negative emotions at remembering how those went. Despite wonderful people able to set aside a fear for vampires, it cannot be said truly to run in families. ]

I am grateful you did as well. Even should they not remember upon returning home, somewhere in their souls, they know I'll find happiness.
