Well, no. Not that I'm aware of. But we do have Lumon to help people. I don't know how they would fare without it.

As I said, Lumon is my world. I was given life only to enjoy the privilege of honoring Kier's vision. I need not concern myself with anything else.

[There's a long moment where Irving debates whether this should be kept a secret or not. But severance is a known technique in his own world. It must be, otherwise his outie couldn't have chosen to subject himself to it. And it's a grand, marvelous feat of technology developed by the Eagan lineage, so...]

I am what they refer to as an innie. Using a special surgical technique known as severance, my perceptual chronologies were split and spatially dictated. What this means is that my consciousness and memories, as I know them, can exist only within the walls of Lumon's severed floor. Once I leave, my so-called outie takes over once again, refreshed yet blissfully unaware after a long day of hard, honest work.

I'm afraid I don't know what my outie is like. Just as he knows nothing of my life, I know nothing of his. It may sound extreme, but it is perfectly painless and done to safeguard Lumon's secrets from those would use them to cause harm. It's an honor to be chosen, really.

Indeed, I can't. I'd imagine this very conversation might be frowned upon by management, but there is no written rule dedicated to an innie speaking with someone from the outside world in this manner. It should not have been possible to begin with.

Do you enjoy the work you do? I mean it sounds like you have immense knowledge of your company, but the work itself... is it satisfying? Enriching to you?

The work is important. It serves a great purpose, and knowing that I have a small hand in that purpose is very satisfying, yes.

What sort of work do you do?

Between jobs at the moment. My previous employment was very enveloping. I needed to step away.

[The idea of stepping away from a job just like that is hard for Irving to picture. He knows the choice exists in the outer world, but not for people like him.]

I was leading a group of people who were trying to awaken a goddess. We believed we could make the world a better place with her influence. I realize I was misguided.

['Awaken a goddess'? Irving struggles with the wording for a moment, then assumes it must not be literal. Something along the lines of 'the goddess will live through our adherence to her core principles', maybe.]
