[ He tries to show what's behind him. ]

I think I can hear you. You are west of me...? Perhaps. [Either that or it's some other Sinatra listener. She starts heading that way, picking carefully across the ground barefoot.]

[ Probably not another Sinatra listener. Steve makes his way due east, hopefully the sounds get louder.

Then, he spots her in the distance, and waves.

He turns the music off, and makes his way over. ]

Hey. Hope you're doing alright.

I am fine. A touch embarrassed. [This is getting old. At least she's fully dressed except for her lack of shoes; once this started happening, Makie took precautions.]

I will be much more at ease once this is not an issue. Thank you for coming to find me.

Hey, it's alright. I'd rather you not be lost, and shoeless out in the woods.

[ He hadn't brought another pair of shoes, but he'll start to untie his own. ]

They're probably a bit big for you.

I wouldn't have thought that was possible, but a mystery for another time. For now, I think returning home is wise.

You know you can always call if you get lost. But, I'm hoping you don't get lost.

I also hope this will not happen again. It is the first time I have ever been lost. [She doesn't like it. The sheer disorientation of waking up somewhere she certainly didn't fall asleep.]

I would hope I go no further afield than this, at least. But thank you, Steve. I will keep that in mind.

Well, alright. How long has this been happening? Who's prescribing these medications to you? Do they know about the effects?

Some weeks now... since soon after we met. The medication is prescribed by a yokai herbalist called Baron Draxum, who did warn me of the possible side effects and that they would settle with time. Other effects are fever and some lightheadedness.

Most of the time, they are manageable. [This was an outlier.] It is to treat my lung sickness. In my time, the disease is incurable. In his time... less so.

There's other healers here, too. You don't have to just go to one

[ Though he's wondering what kind of herbs that she was given. ]

--It doesn't really seem like the side effects have really settled. You should probably tell him about it.

I am aware. I originally asked for healers on the network. Sir Draxum and I had met before; by that time he'd already hunted for the herbs to help. The other offers I received were either to bolster my strength or were... not palatable options.

[She is a good Japanese woman, and offers of magically grown brand new lungs and/or ingesting vampire blood were not really something she cared to consider.]

He knows. I asked him about this at length and confirmed his answers at the library. The mix he has made mimics the current modern treatment from my world, but the side effects are less harsh.

[She appreciates the concern. But Makie is also an intelligent woman, though a little lost in a more modern world.]

If you still have doubts, perhaps you would like to speak to him directly?

[ It would really help if they had more doctors, though, because they seem to be lacking them. ]

I used to have bad lungs myself, but, I did end up getting new ones.

[ Sort of. His old ones sort of... grew into new ones. So, not really something she wants. ]

[She outright smiles at that; it's a nice gesture, even if she makes sure she's free with her medical information on this topic. It's a duty of care, when infectious diseases are involved.

But she's distracted from that soon enough by his follow on:]

Really? Did Baphomet... offer you a pair?

[Because that's what happened to her.]

Baphomet? No.

[ Though that kind of tracks actually. And honestly he's not sure he can trust Baphomet if that was his offer - mostly he just can't get a read on the guy. ]

I uh, got them at home. There was - an experimental serum I had that sort of grew my whole body, got rid of all my ailments, all my scars. It was a little bit strange, but, well. I can turn into a dragon now thanks to Thirteen, so, that kinda puts things into perspective.

The scientist that developed the serum isn't here, so you couldn't get it, but, there's definitely a whole slew of options. You might be able to try the network a second time.

I am more inclined to a natural cure, if one exists. But I am glad you found a solution for your own illness. [She's frankly intimidated by the idea of soldier serums or growing new lungs or the like. Does that explain why Steve is such a large man? Isaku was also pretty huge; she just assumed it was perhaps what white men could be like.]

My cough hasn't been as bad this past week. Whether it's due to the medication or just luck, I do not know. But if it does not work, I will no doubt ask again. I've no desire to be locked in a loop of constant dying.

[ He wonders if she has something like tuberculosis, of which he's so happy there's a modern cure. It had taken his mother, and so many besides.

Of course, they don't have access to the cure here, or anyone to administer it. He's really wishing they had more doctors. ]

I don't mind. It's known by many names in my time, but the one that seems to have survived to present day is tuberculosis.

Sorry, I'd seen it run its course a lot when I was younger. Depending on how far it's gotten, you'd need to take the medicine for I'd say about a year, so, you'd still need something in the meantime if it's advanced.

[ He does not mention that the cure will not be commercially available until 1951. ]
