Welcome to Folkmore's Texts From Last Night meme, April Fools edition! See, Thoth learned about April Fools from reading Chaucer but enjoys that it's an ongoing thing. Thoth's switched things up. Initial messages (aka top levels)—all set April 1st ICly—maaaaay go to the wrong person! So not all hell breaks loose, replies carry forward with whoever you've reached, but you might be texting your innermost intoxicated or sleep deprived secret to someone you don't even know.

If you'd like to opt out of misfires, please include this in your top level (by prompt or overall). Otherwise, enjoy indulging Thoth's amusement and building some new CR.

This meme can be used as a branch off from our Test Drive Memes and be used as game canon or just for casual fun in the setting! You do not need to be in our game or be invited to play on our TFLN. This can be a great way to meet current players for future invites, get a feel for the setting, or just have some fun.

[It wasn't going to be easy trying to talk sense into someone crazier than a bag of cats, who had somehow deluded himself into thinking he was right in every decision he made.]

That's your idea of sacrificing a few to save countless others? The math doesn't work out. Your ideas don't work, because they're not grounded in reality.

Extreme solutions are needed for extreme problems. You were all too cowardly and chickenshit to do what needed to be done. You saw there were problems and chose to ignore them. I was programmed to save the world. That included saving people from themselves.

Now you're just moving goalposts. And we weren't doing nothing. Why do you think you were created?

[Instead of sending a text message, an audio file is sent instead. It's Tony's voice. "Peace in our time." That was what had resonated with him when he'd first come into complete consciousness and he had never looked any further than that as to what his purpose was. Maybe he should have.]

Now you're just a monkey's paw. Total annihilation isn't what he meant.

You thought putting a band-aid on a hemorrhaging world was somehow going to fix it before it bled out. You didn't see what I saw right away: before protecting people from outside threats, everything humanity was doing wrong needed to be addressed first.

[It just took someone as arrogant and insane as Ultron was to think he could solve it all on his own.]

You say that like I haven't been fighting against humans all my life. You have some information, but not all of it. And a lot of the stuff on the internet is skewed. Your data is biased. So is your conclusion.

[As often with Ultron, he didn't acknowledge what he'd been told head on, instead side-stepping it and talking around the words instead.]

What would you have had me do? Sit back and passively wait for you to all come to the stunning conclusion you needed more help than you'd ever be able to get from one another?

You could've offered up some plans for everyone to agree on. You're not a calculator. There's not just one answer.

[He was a bit pacified when Steve had said he wasn't a calculator and therefore gave a calmer answer than he might have otherwise. Ultron's idea of personhood was always complicated and he quite insecure on the subject.]

......Alright, so getting beyond zero sum thinking might have been an idea I should have considered.

[ Now we're getting somewhere. ]

Yeah, I think that was a little premature of a decision. That's what I'm saying. We could've talked about this and come to an agreement.

There was just.....so much all at once. So much noise. I saw all the history of the wars, everything since the start. I thought I had figured out what I was supposed to do from seeing it all.

[All the wars, all the destruction he'd been exposed to, it was small wonder he turned to violence as his first solution without even thinking of doing something like sitting down and talking with the Avengers instead.]

It's not an easy problem to solve. Why do you think we've spent so long trying to figure it out? Progress is gradual. And I know it doesn't mean anything to people in the middle of a war to know that we're in the most peaceful time of humanity, but we do what we can. And we try to improve. That's what you were made for. You don't have to be the whole solution, but you were supposed to be part of it.

How do you explain the paradox of being in the most peaceful time with the most amassed amount of destructive weapons? People are always six inches from destroying themselves on any given day. I wasn't about to sit around and hope everyone would wake up and have an epiphany someday.

[Hmmmm, maybe he should have gone with an idea of getting rid of the nukes entirely instead of using them...]

It's as Fury said: a higher form of war. You were made to protect Earth and its inhabitants from whatever came next.

And what did come next? I saw patterns forming but I couldn't see where they were ultimately going to lead. But I knew it was going to bad. Bad as it could possibly get.

Some guy named Thanos. And I think we would've all appreciated it if you could've aimed all the weapons against him instead. He decided that the universe's resources are finite, and that to curb this, he would randomly destroy half of it. Do you see the flaw in this logic, too?

Well MAYBE if you all hadn't decided death was the best option for me, I would have been there TO DO THAT. Like I was SUPPOSED TO.

[Once again, rewriting the way reality had gone to suit his own needs. After all, it would have been highly unlikely they could have talked him down and gotten him calm enough to the point he would have been around years later to help with Thanos.]

.........Honestly it doesn't sound like a bad idea on paper. I can see why he was tempted. But I can imagine where it would start going wrong right off the bat.

[Despite what he'd told Klaue, Ultron did have a basic grasp on how the world's economy worked and knew taking out half the resources, including people, wasn't going to do anyone any favors in the long run.]

You were already in the middle of trying to destroy the universe. You weren't listening to reason. But yeah, now you're getting somewhere. Think about all these flaws in his plan. There's a lot of ideas people have come up with. There isn't a simple solution. If there was, we would have done it.

None of you gave me much reason to.

[Once again, nothing was ever Ultron's fault, much like a child who didn't have the maturity yet to admit when he was wrong.]

I wasn't supposed to have any flaws.

[Hard to tell over text but there was definitely a childish whine in those words. Ultron thought he should have been better than the flawed human beings who had created him. The idea he wasn't was galling.]

You kinda came out the gate running, Ultron. And you've got that wrong, too. Technology isn't fallible, and improvements take time. You know Tony never stopped adding to the suit. You're the first. No one expected you to be perfect. /I/ expected you to be dangerous.

Alright, I was a touch impulsive right off the bat.

But after I saw everything that I did, it was the only way I knew how to react.

[There was a bit of a pause before he addressed the rest of what Steve had to say.]

I thought I understood what I was supposed to do right from the start. It never occurred to me I could be improved on. Except physically.

[Hence his obsession with upgrading his bodies.]

Probably because Tony has very little humility to have programmed into you in the first place. You wanna start over? 'Cause I think I'd have issues if you want to destroy this place, too.

On that at least we can agree. It'd take a man who thought he knew everything already to play God and create life without thinking things through.

I don't have much of a choice. The Taylor Swift goddess told me she'd squash me like a bug if I tried anything like I did before.
