but yeah it's pretty pathetic

Mother made certain all hers were cultivated to be as prickly as possible.

They require sunlight. Water them only when the top soil is completely dry. At least two inches down. They thrive best in mixed soil.

I believe you might have had a mammillaria bocasana. If that is the case they are even more temperamental to water than other sub-species. During winter you should not water them at all.
