I'd take petty over livestock any day. Still don't think I fully comprehend it. I mean, I get it but... maybe I just don't like it.

You ever wonder what your life would've been like if you'd been like them?

It can be hard to emotionally understand something fully, even if it makes intellectual sense. That is no terrible thing, for it protects us from some harm.

It would not be my life, for to change that about me, I would no longer be myself.

See, and I wonder all the time how differently things would be if I was no longer myself. No powers, no fire. Or no Sharon. It's like a thought exercise.

Whilst I understand the philosophical underpinnings to that mental simulation, such an enormous deviation is not of interest to me. It is so easy to get stuck in the past or down unhelpful mental rabbit holes, even for years at a time when on my own, that I try to focus such brooding on useful matters that will help me develop further. I cannot claim that I am always successful, but I personally must resist that inquiry in particular. I would hate for it to excuse my mistakes as they seem paltry in comparison to the horrors I've seen plenty of vampires commit.

It may also be that having lived in an entire civilization full of vampires who did not hold that belief, I have little need to imagine what I would have been like. I have seen it in a thousand iterations already across the span of my life.

You don't have to explain, Mayerling, I get it. Your life would've been different, but you've witnessed other vampires live that life.

For me, it reaffirms my choices. You don't need that same affirmation.

I am glad that you have found this affirmation, and I stand by the decisions you've made to do right by you.

I know you do. I appreciate it. Really. I know the shit I've done wasn't good, and maybe it wasn't even necessary, but I did what I felt I needed. Even that was barely enough.

What is necessary and what is needed emotionally are not always the same thing. When so much was denied you for so long, getting what you could emotionally was necessary.

I never tire of hearing it or knowing it. You are the most amazing part of Folkmore.

Yes, as incredible as that is, as long as it had been since I was part of a society, you are more wonderful than all of that. I know and appreciate my priorities.

I wouldn't believe anyone else if they told me that.

You make me happy, and you make this place worth it.

I only appreciate that such intensity of my love does not frighten you away. It can be so great of feeling, and I never want it to overwhelm you.

It didn't overwhelm me when I first died in Trench, and I don't think it's even possible now. I could drown in your love, Mayerling, and die happy.

I thought I might lose my mind when that happened, and I might have had you not returned and having returned stayed with me. It is the closest I came to full corruption in Trench.

I ask that you not die, not for a long, long time, for I am greedy and wish as many years with you as I can.

While I can't make any promises, what with life being life and Folkmore being Folkmore, I will do my very best to stick around as long as humanly (and inhumanly) possible.

It was an unreasonable question when it comes to those matters that are outside our control—I am well aware. Your best is all and the utmost I could expect from you. I admit, I wonder how being a Sleeper and perhaps even a Role might affect how long you can live, and should it make you live longer, I do appreciate that. How much of death in Folkmore is Folkmore versus a Role?

Death is pretty rare here. The last time there was a string of them, it was the fae. And I don't know if dying of old age is even possible here.

I do not know whether old age can come for people, yet I have clearly seen that people age while they are here. It is most readily seen in the youngest of us, yet I mark it all the same across our friends and neighbors. We grow older, for whatever that means whence we come.

Wait, you can tell people are aging?

Yes, is that not apparent to everyone? You can see it in people's bodies and faces. You don't need to see their circulatory systems.

Sometimes. It's obvious in kids, but I never really notice adults aging. Probably too slow a process to be obvious unless I'm looking for it.
